Named rosters will not appear online for NCAA Football 08

**Edit 6/14: Update on the issue. Names will display in online games.

One of the more disappointing things to come out of the NCAA Football Community Day is the confirmation that edited roster names will not appear in online games on the Xbox 360 and PS3. This means for the people who manually edit the player names or import a full roster file, those will only be applicable for offline games. Everyone will be playing with QB #5, WR #82, DE #56, ect in the online games.

Curiously, it seems that the names will continue to appear online in the PS2 and Xbox versions. We've also seen recently that the names show up in both college basketball games.

So what is the deal here keeping EA Sports from allowing people to use the names in online NCAA Football games? Simply the pressure is coming in from the NCAA and EA has to abide by what they say.

The whole situation is disappointing for those who play heavily online since the majority are not familiar with all the players in the game. Adding in the names makes the experience more enjoyable for most.

It is an unfortunate situation and hopefully one that will change in the coming years. However it looks like for now we're stuck with it as is.

Ugh. If the NCAA is putting pressure on EA, why not insist on uniformity? It’s OK for names to show up on last-gen consoles, but not the current ones?
If the NCAA is driving this decision, then it simply illustrates how backwards their bureaucracy still is. If it’s EA’s decision, however… for shame.

What could there reasoning be behind this? If someone wants to spend hours of their life researching and entering data, why can’t they enjoy the reward of there hard work. Do the amatuer athletes get monetarily compensated if there name is on a game, no. Maybe they are not getting enough money from TV revenue, bowl games and merchandise sales. This is very disappointing.

I think the problem is that if names are being displayed it gives the perception that EA is supporting and enabling that. In a way using it as a selling point.

I don’t agree with that, and feel that if consumers do something individual to customize their game that it shouldn’t matter.

In the end though its the relationship between the NCAA and EA and we just don’t know the details of that.
