Wade Live 08

Earlier today I wrote an article with one of the topics being the leagues in NBA Live 08. While some of the details on them were known, others still hadn't been addressed. Since then I was able to gather this additional information from EA.

Each member plays up to X number of games against each other member of the league, where X is an odd number (1, 3, 5, 7, 9 or 11) chosen at league creation.

Games are schedule-free: just see who's online at the same time as you are, and play your games against them.

We keep track of the wins, losses and stats under the hood. At all times, users can check these stats in our interface.

The winner is the league member with the best record when all games are played, then we move into season 2.

Personally I like the structure and openness of this system especially scheduling wise. The only thing I am disappointed with is the lack of playoffs. While it meshes with having no concrete schedule such as the regular season, it removes the motivation for many people to continue playing once they realize they aren't going to finish with the best record.

What type of options do you get or does EA cripple them. 2K’s online experience is nice because they leave how you want to play up to the gamers rather than crippling the features like how many minute quarters you choose to play.

Earlier it was said there could be 2-32 teams in a league. They allow odd numbers (1 to 11) of games between each team. After I got my calculator out, a 32 team league with 11 games against each team would be a 341 game schedule. That would take a long time to complete, and I think the winner of such a league should get a free copy of NBA Live ‘10, since 2010 is probably when the league would finish.

These leagues are certainly a step in the right direction, but I think the whole playoff issue or lack of playoffs needs to be addressed in the future. Even a 20 team league with 7 games against each team would be 133 games, and to have one winner based on standings alone is a ton of unplayed league games waiting to happen.

Its not like anyone would actually do a 32 team league were they play each other 11 times. I’d imagine most leagues with 20+ teams would only play each other team once or 3 times tops. I think the majority wouldn’t go any higher than playing each team 3 times regardless of the league size with a few smaller 8-12 team leagues going with more.

I love the idea of this… But I have a life. I have a child, home, work… were can you find the time to play these games… I only play at night when I put the kid to bed and the person I play in this league will have to be on the same scheldule as me. EA is making strides on this, but this is for the cats they do nothing but play games all day. I have probably played online for a total of 50 games and I have had mine since it dropped. Cool idea though.
