Exciting NBA Live 08 news coming?

NBA Live 08 Tony Parker

A few days ago it was mentioned in a blog on the NBA Live 08 website that there would be exciting news regarding Live this week. However I have found out that whatever it is will not be revealed until Monday the 24th.

No one really has a confident feel on what this news could be. Some have suggested the release date may be pushed up to next Tuesday, but its hard to believe EA would want to release Live on the same day as Halo 3. On the other hand it would still accomplish beating out NBA 2K8 to the store shelves. Both currently are set to be in stores on Tuesday October 2nd.

Regardless of what the news holds I am hoping to have my copy of Live early next week. Full impressions, comparisons to the Community Day build, and videos will follow soon after having it in hand.

Update 9/24: I've just been informed that this announcement is now unlikely to come today. It should make its way out by the end of the week, possibly as early as tomorrow.

It won’t be the dream team. Plain and simply put, if any player is not part of the National Basketball Players association, their likeness can not be used in a video game. This is why you never see MJ or Barkley.

I would not be so sure on that one Isaiah. But it would be really nice if we could use the FIBA players (including the 92 Dream Team) in Dynasty Mode and Fantasy Drafts. But before we keep this going, first we must know if the big surprise will be that. I´m still leaning towards a lower price being the great news.

Dante, to answer your question, the legends that are in the game, are part of the players association. Jordan, Barkely and whoever else you would consider a great one (that is not in the game) are not part of the players association.

    Joel0078:

If you recall Jordan took issue with the commissioner and the NBA way before he ever retired. I don’t recall the exact details but his likeness was not to be used without his permission. Jordan (unlike any other player the league has seen) is his own brand so not seeing him in the game would not be a surprise since Jordan takes a percentage of every company that endorses him (he’s the only athlete to ever pull of such a deal).

It would be nice to see ether a lower price point or early release date.

Maybe they’re gonna announce that the game got reviews higher than a 6 that Live 07 was consistently getting.

I could see a lower price in an effort to offer a break to anyone who bought last year’s crappy offering.

I’m still going with an early release.

Art, you’re correct. However, it doesn’t change the fact that typically, a player has to be part of the players association to be used. Jordan is like no other athlete ever seen, specifically in regards to his image. With his consent and a large pay off to him, I’m sure he could be used in any game. I’m sure he doesn’t come cheap.

Just another prime example of EA being overconfident about nothing. They can release this “game” on the same day as halo 3. go right ahead, see how that sells. 2k knows when to back down something EA has and never will learn. We will see tuesday..

  • http://www.artoficial.com/ Artoficial

    Joel0078:

I agree, I wish I knew what the percent was when I saw the show about the fact that he gets percentage from the companies he does business with. The amazing part wasn’t the amount of the percentage it was the fact that he got it from every company (insane I tell you).

Although it would be cool to play with Jordan in the game I would hope this isn’t the big news.

I’m really looking forward to this game and since I’d rather spend my money and time playing call of duty 4 as far as a shooter goes, I don’t think it would be a bad idea to release it on the same day or week as Halo. It’s actually smarter than a dual B-Ball release date in my opinion.

It must be a lower price or some kind of tournament for cash…an early release would not be a smart move in my view. It´s not the case of having the money to buy both Halo 3 and Live 08 this week, but the time to play both games. Everybody that will get Halo 3 will be hooked in the game this week. There´s no point in buying 2 games at the same time if you´ll just pick one of them to play.

Its certainly not going to hurt EA to release the game early. Its ridiculous to even suggest that. The same people who have their minds made up about buying the game right now, are still going to buy the game regardless of whether or not its released on the same day as Halo 3. If nothing else, EA can hope that releasing Live a week early will give them an edge over 2k. But its 1 week difference, not several months. Its not like its going to tremendously boost their sales over a weeks period of time. The game comes out in 2 weeks, I can wait for the original date. I actually have to, my 360 is at Microsoft for repairs and I’m not expecting it back until mid October, at least!

I stand by my opinion. And I don´t think it´s ridiculous either. I have one point of view, you may have another. I pre-ordered Halo 3 and I will buy Live 08 (and 2K8). But even if I pick up Halo and Live on the same day, when my schedule allows me to play games, I´ll have to pick only one to play. So there´s no point in having Live (or Halo for that matter) collecting dust here at my home this week if I´ll be playing just one of them. And since Halo isn´t a superficial experience, people who bought it will invest their time in it before playing other games. And besides, people who played the Live 08 and the 2K8 demos already made their mind about wich one they´re gonna get, so Live releasing early won´t change their minds either.

maybe ridiculous wasn’t the right word and I wasn’t trying to offend you. I don’t think its an accurate assumption though, but thats just my opinion. I buy both games on release day, every year for 5 years now. I’v never had a problem playing both on the same day. But again, thats just me.

I still think that considering tons of people will be in video game stores this week, having Live on the shelves is not a bad idea.

    Smartconsumer,

What the hell kind of dumb ass comment is that, LOL! Seriously dude. If EA decided to release the game on the same launch day a Halo I’m sure it’s not based on the intention of competing with Halo rather getting a jump start on 2K8. So if they only sell 100 copies of the game before their original release date of October 2nd tell me how that is a bad thing.

NBA Live and 2K8 are in competition not Halo 3. 2K knows when to back down WTF kinda of dumb a$# statement is that, laughable really. The difference is obviously two different companies with two different marketing philosophies. This year the two title are really going tit for tat like never before in my opinion. Don’t think 2K wasn’t paying attention when live released their Demo. I think 2K made the smart move by following up with their own but giving us longer quarters to really get a feel of the game (smart move). So this new exciting new may be EA firing back as they should if they believe in their product. This year EA really can stand proud in what they’ve achieved with LIVE. This year we get to choose a game based on personal taste not because one is just bad enough to send you running to 2K.

Don’t mean to come off so harsh it’s just you’re comment is a bit silly.

Ok Joel. I can play both Live and 2K at the same day as well, and I do. But Halo will demand more time from people because of its nature. Everybody (who is a fan) is waiting for this. They´re going to finish the campaign and then explore the multiplayer features. What I am discussing here is the fact that it will be easy for Live to get lost in the middle of the Halo extravaganza. I think it´s already an uphill batle for Live to go against 2k alone. But that´s just me, Anthony seems to agree with you. I just don´t konw if it´s a great idea, much less a big annoucement. I´d rather see a lower price.
