A new MLB 08: The Show interview, screens, and video has been posted up over at IGN. The interview is massive spanning a full six pages and goes over improvements for 08 as well as more details on new features. There are 11 new screenshots and the video shows off gameplay through replay footage.

Despite all the news and media on the game, the cover announcement still hasn’t been made. This is somewhat out of the ordinary so I’d expect that to be revealed soon. Prince Fielder, Matt Holliday, and Ryan Howard would probably be the front-runners, however we’ve seen an awful lot of Red Sox and Miguel Tejada screens which may or may not be a sign. It seems unlikely Tejada would be considered especially given the recent steroid news but a player from the Red Sox would make sense coming off the World Series victory.

It’s weird, the graphics in this most recent video appear to be a bit better than in the previous trailers that we’ve seen. Hopefully, the updated textures will make as much of a difference as the devs seem to think.

I was still hoping for more/better player models though. Wishful thinking?

Also, I’d like to see individual follow-through animations for some batter. Playing as my Mets for example, Carlos Delgado has his signature batting stance. That’s all well and good. But when the time comes to actually swing the bat, his swing animation looks identical to pretty much every other player in the game. You could make Carlos Delgado a white, right-handed hitter and I’d still be able to identify him by his swing and his follow-through. IMO, that element is just as important in defining a hitter as is his batting stance.

And lastly, I REALLY hope they fix the flags, so that they’re not constantly cycling through their animation, even when there’s no wind. I know this is a seemingly minor issue, but it bothers the hell out of me.

It seems that player models and animations have taken a back seat to textures and lighting. The game looks lovely on still shots, but it looks a bit dated in motion.
