Online Baseball Night one

The first Online Baseball Night will take place tomorrow (Thursday) with the concentrated upon time being 3pt/6et through 7pt/10et. This is a time for the community to gather and get in some good games against quality opponents for the 360 MLB 2K8 or the PS3 MLB 08: The Show. You can read up more on what the night will entail here.

After trying out The Show online tonight I’ve found there to have been significant improvements made and I’ve been seeing reports of that from others as well. The games I’ve played since the maintenance have been relatively smooth and consistent. The main issue I’ve had has been the bat not swinging in tandem with the button press, which makes it real hard to make adjustments because you can’t judge what you’re doing wrong. That happened in two out of the three games (the third game felt really good and didn’t have that problem). So there is definitely a sense of relief that at least it is running better and hopefully it continues improve even more. I haven’t gotten a chance to try out 2K8 again so I don’t know if the performance has gotten better online for that.

I wanted to mention that if you play The Show online and signed up to SportsConnect you can log in at the website and view your profile, stats, game history (including partial box scores of each game), search other users for the same info, the leagues are hosted on there, and there is more I just haven’t even gone through everything there yet. Definitely worth checking out. Click here to go to the SportsConnect site. This could be pretty cool to drop links to from the games that are completed tomorrow. Here is an example of the game I just completed which was ended early due to time constraints.

I’ll probably try to get 2 games in on each side although I may want to just go up against fellow west coasters in hope of avoiding the more severe lag issues. Continue on for a list of PSN and Xbox Live gamertags that were previously left in the comments. If you’d like me to add you to the list just go ahead and drop them in the comments here. We’ll also try to gather in a lobby room for easier challenging (I’ll update here with the room names tomorrow) so it isn’t required that you leave your gamertag to participate. Check back here for any updates prior to the start tomorrow.

The only problem is when ever someone accepts a challenge from a lobby their game freezes. Its happen to me and a couple people on my friends list. MLB 2K8 is a great game but 2k needs to come out a patch for online play to fix the lag and servers. But I’ll be their to see if its any better.

after hearing that challenges made in 2K8 lobby rooms apparently freeze your system make sure that you challenge from your friends list instead. It doesnt look like you can create rooms anyway which is lame.

for The Show it has an in-game buddy list. I’d suggest adding PSN names to that.

Man 2K8 is ridiculous. I’ll have a full recap of the game by tomorrow in my writeup but I’ll just throw out there that we combined for 16 homeruns. And thats with me trying to NOT hit homeruns the last 4 innings or so lol. And it being a freakin Astros-Pirates matchup. GG reeso just wish it didn’t turn out like that.

BTW this is really cool, anyone in your buddy list that’s playing a game you can click on and look at a real-time game status. It shows the score (and by innings), whos on the mound, on the bases, batting, and situation. Pretty neat to follow.

I’ve been playing on All Star and my last couple games have all been of the 5-4 or 6-2 variety with just a homerun or two per game

Unless of course you’re just lobbing meatballs at each – then I think you’re gonna get Tater City no matter what

It was whatever the defaults are for online. It was unranked though because the only way you get ranked games (sadly) is through quick match. I’m sure upping the difficulty would help but it would be ridiculous if the only way to play decent game is through unranked. They used to have sliders for unranked games too but they’re missing this year for some reason.

Its just frustrating the rarity of ground balls. Anytime you make good contact its a double or homerun. In this game we combined for 16 homeruns, 15 doubles, and 14 singles. I turned one double play. I don’t remember grounding out once other then when I was giving up outs late in the game by bunting.

Plus when you factor in the lag it just becomes a swing and pray game. And if you get lucky then you get a homerun and if you don’t then you pop out. Pitching wise I had things under control, threw very few meatballs, but the timing on hitting requires you to just guess and swing at most everything hoping that the pitch was off enough that you’ll crush the ball instead of pop it up.

Hmmmm – I’m sure what you say is absolutely true – the games I’ve played have been through Invite A Friend and I seem to remember (almost positive) we upped the setting to All Star

As for the fly ball issue – I can’t say I’ve had that problem, but I’ve heard it elsewhere, so again maybe it’s the level or whatever

Hopefully the upcoming patch will address the choppiness so that people can get an idea of what the developers had in mind

I love the pitching mechanic after a couple days – don’t know if I’ll be coming around on the Swing Stick

Ok actually I just figured this out. There are icons near the bottom left of the screen. If you hit select, you can move within those. You should have one pulsating and that is the buddy invite.
