Gamestop Madden Monday: Returning Missed FGs

by
Posted May 5th, 2008 at 7:43 am

This week’s Gamestop Madden Monday focuses on the ability to return missed field goals and includes two new screenshots of Devin Hester in position to do so.

One of these Madden NFL 09 innovations is the ability to return missed field goals. Over the past couple of years, we’ve seen in the real-world NFL how a seemingly insignificant field-goal attempt can be turned into a momentum-changing, or even game-deciding, touchdown return.

It will be a nice change to force people into considering the risk of attempting a long field goal. However if kicking is overpowered (as has been the case seemingly forever) it may not really matter. Hopefully kickoffs aren’t going through the back of the end zone and long distance FG attempts actually have the potential of coming up short enough that they can be returned.

Man I was waiting for this mondays new feature topic and its just ehh lol. Although I like the ability to return a missed fg. How many chances will we really get? Specially if the kicking game is still over powered like previous version. But I guess thats what sliders are for anyways.

…………….Until next Monday I suppose lol.

These arent the key features of the game – Just little cool things not seen in last years. This is the exact feature I was expecting them to post about. It is cool to me when in the 4th Q online people would run the clock and kick a 70 yard field goal at the end to kill time. This time I can have a shot at running it back for a TD.

kicking and blocking of FG’s need to be totally redone IMO……..but this is a feature that adds some realism and a ‘lil excitement to the game!

…oh, and I almost forgot to mention-
    GO BILLS!!! :)

  • Dre

I thought this was suppose to be in last year’s game. I just hope it isn’t something that is flawed and people can abuse to their advantage when it isn’t called for. I think its all in all though, but I just hope they can remedy some of the other defects that have been plaguing the game for years most notably for the next-gen system. I just hope it can be a game that I can play until the next installment of Madden unlike 08 which I have stopped playing for months now.

Pointless unless they fix the 90 yard field goals. How frustrating was it last year online when i would stop someone at the 50 to 40 yard line and they would kick a 55 plus yarder through every time. Pasta if you get a chance to speak with them, PLEASE TELL THEM to fix this annoying problem. At least make it so they can’t do it everytime

he’s just saying that it was too easy to do. and he’s absolutely right. didn’t matter the kicker’s rating, everyone could boot the ball like Janikowski. Something needs to be done to make the kicking game more difficult. Especially with lower rated kickers. I shouldn’t be able to kick as well as the best kickers with a kicker rated a 68.

A decent addition, even though an entire NFL season can pass without it happening. Still, might as well be in there.

Kicking as a whole needs an overhaul. Field goals should be more difficult to make, and the kick-offs are obviously too powerful. I’m looking forward to seeing more gameplay video.

I just want a better overall presentation for the entire game. I mean the pre, halftime, and post game presetation is seriously lacking in areas. Winning the Super Bowl is like finding out the you won the lottery but only to owe it to the IRS.

I love how they add in a feature that might happen once in an entire NFL season. Now, one of two things will happen:

    1. EA is lazy and doesn’t fix the overpowered kickers, so unless you try a 60+ yard FG, it won’t matter because every kicker can boot the ball a mile.

    2. The CPU will take stupid FG chances and let you return them.

Do we know if you will have to call a specific play to return a FG, or can you just put a guy back there? If you have to call a specific play, this feature is pointless.

How often are you going to return the missed FG for a TD? If this is too easy, it will just take all the fun out of it.

That seems to be taboo asking for samll details like that. People tend to think things like that don’t matter, but I on the other hand like all small details that make the game feel realistic. I just hope it doesn’t dissapoint me like 08 done which I don’t play anymore.

Yea i realize NFL kickers are kicking 55 yarders. But there is no reason why Lauwrence Tynes is kicking from the 40 yard line and making them like its his bday. Im a huge Giants fan, but he’s not good at all. There are times where some coaches won’t even kick it because the circumstances. In NCAA they are doing this feature freeze the kicker, where calling a time out makes the meter look frozen and makes it harder to pinpoint full power. But i should know the diff between a big leg kicker and an accurate kicker. And please don’t have big leg kickers able to make it from the 50 yard line. Its a pain.

I hope that because you can return FG that it doesn’t increase the number of missed field goals that get returned.

Yes, in the past couple of years we have seen Cromartie and Hester make long returns however this doesn’t happen that often.

As with every other new feature EA introduces, it will be overdone in some way. Really, unless you can just walk a guy back there to return the kick, this will be worthless.

If I have to call a “return FG” play, then the offense is just going to audible into something else and catch me with only 10 guys at the line and probably poor personnel on the field. Easy conversion for a first down.

Either that or it will will really easy to return them for some reason.

Again, this is a feature that Madden didn’t really need, but is nice to have. It would have been a lot cooler to just have included this, but have people discover it when they ran someone back there to try and catch the kick.

There are 100 other things that need worked on and fixed in Madden before adding this gimmick. Again, nice to have, but please fix the stuff that is broken first.

CPU INTs in simmed games counting as 2 instead of 1 would be good for starters.

since we are on the subject of kicking,i have a question for an nfl nut . lets say i have a kicker who is not very accurate (madden or real life) and i wanna atempt a field goal on 3rd down instead of 4th ,simply because he might not make it on the first try .now if he makes it obviously i’ll get 3 points, but if he misses on that 3rd down attempt will it be 4th down ,or will it be change of possesion?

Change of posession because I’m calling the “return FG” play and taking that ball back the other way for 6 on your ass.

At least in NCAA it seemed to be either putting a guy back automatically or you’d have to run him back yourself. There wasn’t a specific “FG return” play to call.

That would be fantastic if that was the case. I’d prefer to put the guy back there myself, but I’d be OK with him just going back there on really long FG kicks. Good job EA, if that is truly the case.

I rather see EA update the player models (dreads, long hair, tattoos, fat bastards like Sam Adams looking like the walking refrigerators they appear) and accesories (eye paint, nose bands, mouth protectors, NECK PAD, towels).
Gaming is the only taste of NFL I have once the season is over and right now I’m stock playing madden 07 for xbox ‘cuz the 360 versions suck…I believe that we should expect AND demand more from EA…
