Madden 09 IGN hands-on preview

IGN has posted up their hands-on report for Madden 09 and also added some new screenshots. Overall it recaps most of what is already known about the game without much in the way of first-hand opinion, which is what we’ll be able to provide next week out of the community event. You can read the full preview here, while a new gameplay video which includes an instance of the Rewind/Backtrack feature and the first time hearing the new commentators has been added and can be watched here (make sure to switch over to high-res).

As I’ve stated before, I really hope they not only reduce constant camera flashes from the crowd (should only be at specific moments) but also adjust the kickoff cut scene so that it won’t prevent teams from having a chance to get their premiere returner in place to field it. Either that or they absolutely need to add a return play that has just one player back instead of two. Also the addition of rivalries affecting the games is a positive step forward, however a true home field advantage is sorely needed to add to the realism and atmosphere. Graphically though it is looking fantastic, obviously the gameplay is going to require hands-on time with to really evaluate.

I don’t think there is much question that new feature wise NCAA Football 09 has the edge this year, but the overall package may still fall with Madden.

Only if something has changed, that is the first mention of it coming to the Xbox, so it may just be an error.

**BTW I added a link to the video. Commentary sounds good, that’ll be a refreshing change just on its own.

Only if something has changed, that is the first mention of it coming to the Xbox, so it may just be an error.

i know everybody be hard on madden cuz of the product they put out the last couple of years but this has to get u a little geek up about the presention.Im loving the play break down and the game looks great.I know people is going to come in here and talk negative but they are putting in the effort to make us forget about those last couple of maddens.They are earning my respect a little by little.

Tom Hammond’s voice doesn’t go with the flow of the game at all. He’s great in real life but it just sounds choppy or something in the game. Maybe it’s just me. Overall though I still think NCAA looks better so far, especially in terms of atmosphere.

The Colts no longer play in the RCA Dome…they move into the new Lucas Oil Stadium this year.

I think the virtual trainer should be done away with, they should of just made it look like an NFL practice rather than something out of an 80′s sci-fi movie. I think the backtrack is stupid, so I’m glad they are giving me the option of turning it off completely. I’m happy to see that they really are trying to up the presentation, altho i still rather see either the players warming up on the field while the play-by-play discusses what needs to be done for the teams to get the win, ya know, kinda what was done in the 2K games and the last gen Maddens, or have a full pre-game show. I’m THRILLED that the god awful radio guy has been taken out to the shed and shot, but like others have said, Hammond just seems out of it. Altho a horrible Hammond is BY FAR better than that radio announcer. I thought Chris Collinsworth sounded pretty good. I’m glad to see that the presentation will increase for rivalry games, altho, imo, this should be focused more in NCAA, not Madden. If there is added presentation to the playoffs and Superbowl, it looks like ill be purchasing Madden for the first time in 3 years, i mean my complaints with the past 3 versions of the game seem to be diminishing with every preview.

First thing I noticed was the bad audio editing on Hammond’s voice. It’s very unnatural sounding because of the extra split-second pauses that they really should tighten up. Backtrack feature looks cool. I love the way it looks graphically.

At least there is a clip of the Rams sporting the correct default “home” uniform again…after last year’s plethora of uniform gaffes and inaccuracies, thats a good sign in and of itself…
