Madden 09 uniform errors list

by pastapadre
Posted May 23rd, 2008 at 6:05 pm

A while back I took down some notes on uniform errors that had been seen in the screenshots and videos for Madden 09. One of them was the Cowboys’ helmet star which was far too large. Producer Ian Cummings has released a screen demonstrating that this has been fixed which can be compared to a previous Felix Jones screenshot.

In my interview with Peter Moore I brought up the issue of uniform inaccuracies and he stated that it would be a topic they would address. Since then we’ve learned that instead of using the NFL provided style guide they are reviewing the uniforms that have been worn by the teams in video to make sure they match correctly. That has shown to be a positive development as many teams that have been plagued by wrong uniform combinations over the years have been seen as finally correct in media that has been displayed.

Currently the list of uniform errors that I have noted for EA consists of: Ravens need black shoes, Chiefs need AFL patch and numbers on jersey sleeves instead of the shoulders, Steelers helmet should have single digit number on the yellow stripe instead of off to the side of it, and some Seahawks players wear neon green gloves or shoes (pipe dream that’ll be in though).

Feel free to add anything you’ve noticed that isn’t right or that has been incorrect over the years and I’ll include them in the list to pass along as well as check on next week.

Charger's retro powder blues jersey is a horrible hibrid between the 60s and 2007 alternate:
Numbers are as in the original 60's jersey, but the lightning on shoulders, and the "Chargers" logo are from the current thing. NFL shield is missing on CHARGERS white jerseys. You can´t get the chargers real 2007 alternate look since the powder blues numbers doesn´t match and the pants with the powder blue stripe with the 2007 bolt are missing too!
Neither the navy jersey is correct on Madden 10! Numbers happened to be outlined with a powder blue line, not a navy one!

Teams like the Bengals and the Falcons have a lot of the jersey types. Bengals need their orange jerseys and combinations such as all black, all white, orange/black, orange/white and the Falcons needs all black, red/black, all white. But as far as EA fixing the uniforms I noticed the Bears numbers are thick anymore, and the eagles home jerseys have the black shadow with the silver outlining. Game definitely looking good so far tho.

The first guy hit upon the main errors in the Jets uniforums. Please pasta get them to hear this one. Much like the cowboys the Jets helmet logo is to big and should be cut in size dramatically. Aslo going off this screen shot it seems they have the color correct this year http://s38.photobucket.com/albums/e149/a4reak/Jets%20Stuff/?action=view&current=gholstonmadde.jpg . Please have they decreae the size of numbers on the arn sleeve.

Personally I couldn’t give a crap about minute uniform details. I don’t make it a habit of trying to memorize the uniforms for every team in the NFL. Ignorance is bliss when it comes that crap.

As long as the game mechanics are solid, I couldn’t care less if the players came out wearing a pink tutu and a friggin tiara.

GAMEPLAY, GAMEPLAY, GAMEPLAY…….THAT IS WHAT IS IMPORTANT. Get that right and you have a winner. Get it wrong and you have a crap game but look on the bright side, your teams uni’s are acurate.

EA needs to figure out the numbers on the helmets for the throwback Chargers (and now the throwback Browns, if they choose to include the uniform used occasionally for the past couple of years). It’s certainly not impossible. The Alabama helmet numbers have been available in EA NCAA for years now. I for one would love to see more throwback jerseys in the Madden series. 2K proved that a quality title can be introduced with tons of throwback/alternate uniform choices. That being said, I think overall that EA has paid great attention to uniform details. The Bears and Steelers 94 unis are tight.

Blitz, you sure get on everyone’s nerves. Even the people on the EA boards have told you to shut the hell up several times, lol. Who cares what you don’t care about? LOL. It’s obviously important to others so let it be.

Obviously gameplay is the most important thing, but it’s weak to just give a company a pass when they make so many easily correctable mistakes year in-year out.

Again, I don’t know why fans like you make it seem that improvements are an either-or kind of thing. They can correct the uniforms and still place the focus on gameplay. Besides, Ian Cummings has already said that they have different teams working on different aspects of the game (common sense btw). So just b/c they are trying to get uniforms straightened up (Thank God for fixing the Cowboys helmets) doesn’t mean gameplay gets neglected. Get a clue.

Wrong, get that right and you have a start. There are plenty of games that have truly good gameplay but such a bad setting or a bland story that they end up falling short. You want good, solid gameplay with a great attention to detail to make everything else stand out(altho if you could, youd want GREAT gameplay with a GREAT attention to detail). Look at GTA IV, the game features solid gameplay, not great, but solid, yet Rockstar has done an AMAZING job on the littlest of details that truly makes the city come alive thus making the game arguably one of the best games to hit the next-gen consoles. Had Rockstar of taken your approach, we would of had a Gears of War like shooting system but with a city that felt like the surface of the Moon. So sure gameplay is very important, but having great detail truly helps that gameplay stay fresh.

    Pasta,

Can you make sure that you bring up equipment accuracy as well. Last year d-line/o-line/linebackers had the wrong default facemask. It was the freaky “full-cage with vertical bars up near the eyes” ala the robot or Deion Sanders/Emmit Smith mask. No one in the NFl wears that and I barely see it in the NCAA. The default should be the “full-cage” or the “Revo full-cage” for lineman and LB’s.

I can safely say that this will never happen as long as the NFL retains an exclusive license deal. Simply put, the socks are a MANDATORY part of the uniform and players in the league actually get fined for not compiling with the specifications every week. I just can’t see EA (or anyone else in the future for that matter) getting the NFL’s permission to change that…

Agreed…I actually thought the Cowboys uniform errors over the last few versions were some of the biggest gaffes in the game – starting with the wrong default at home, then the ’start’ logo being about three sizes too large amd ending with the color being all wrong too. I was astounded that “America’s Team” – the single most recognizable team in the NFL to many casual fans – was actually one of the worst portrayals in the entire game!

Its good to see that they have moved beyond that now…the screenshot posted above finally DOES look like the Dallas Cowboys again! (of course the easy “shot” here is “about friging time”, but I choose to look at this as further evidence that Frazier/Cummings/Moore and company are legit in saying they will bring Madden back to the top of the sports game world again…

SD alternate uniforms have blue facemask not grey as in their previous throwbacks..

Dal..black is not part of their uniform..Felix Jones should have white tape not black as shown in the screenshot

Moostache, I think you may have misunderstood my post above regarding the sock lengths…

While the NFL does have strict uniform standards, NFL players actually have different options regarding the team socks they are given.

One set of socks has both white and the team color/stripes (with the white being at the foot and the color/stripe being at the end of the sock tube).

They also have a set of just a plain colored sock (team color) along with a regular white tube sock.

Some players wear the socks with the “combo” socks whereas some choose to wear the colored sock with the plain white sock over it.

Wearing the two seperate socks, some players wear the white tube sock pulled up (Reggie Bush) and some wear the white tube suck scrunched down. A good example of this would be Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmanzadeh.

Either way, both styles are worn by different players and the different socks are part of the NFL’s official uniform.

Come to think of it, I recall someone mentioning the option to have socks high, low or normal was in NCAA 09.

I know that based on one of the latest videos for NCAA 09, Knowshon Moreno had long black socks, which he does wear, though this differed from other Georgia playeers in the video clip.

Not that this is a HUGE deal…just a nice minor detail to make the game more authentic…

I noticed the Seattle Seahawks’ throwbacks had these errors:

    1) Logo on helmet did not stretch behind the helmet
    2) Logo on helmet — top stripe should be blue and bottom stripe green….Game had bottom stripe as transparent…LOOKED HORRIBLE!!!!

Also, I would like to see the 80’s Seahawks uniforms where teh Seahawk logo is on the sleeves. Although I like the originals, the 80s uniforms were the best.

Also, I would like to see EA go the way of 2K and add uniforms that weren’t worn. 2K had Dolphins’ navy blues, Vikings yellows, etc….

Also, Detroit Lions 1980 home uniforms had silver numbers with white outline, some of the best uniforms ever…

Oh, and the Dallas helmets look much better. I also agree that the hue of the silver was dark. It appears that EA has it more accurate.

I also thought that the Chiefs logos on the helmets appeared to be over-sized as well….
