NBA Live 09 Secret Feature Revealed

The San Jose Mercury News has leaked the first details on the secret feature for NBA Live 09 that will be officially announced at the EA press conference this afternoon. I will wait until after that announcement is made before posting more specifics on what it is all about along with my personal thoughts. As stated in my hands-on the feature was presented for literally two hours so it is much more in-depth than just a single paragraph can describe. Until then you can take in the following information.

EA plans to announce today that the latest version of its “NBA Live” game will include a constantly updated artificial intelligence.

Whenever users log on to the game, the title will connect to the Internet to download data from the latest NBA games, including such details as whether a player like Kobe Bryant is taking more shots from the left or the right side of the floor and his relative success from each spot. The game will use such information to affect how the virtual Kobe Bryant plays in “NBA Live” and how he is guarded.

Yah kotaku.com leaked it last week, doesn’t make it any less special either. I agree with the tag “ground-breaking” on this feature too

this sounds like a good feature but its not something that would make me pick this over nba 2k9 they need to work on gameplay so much

Not impressed although, I need to hear more info on this.

There’s a lot more to it than that, which will be explained later today. Overall I have somewhat mixed feelings on it which I’ll lay out as well.

Color me unimpressed until I see it work. I don’t have any faith in EA’s ability to actually make this work, given the technical issues that the face with much less complicated features in games.

Also, what would the point of ratings be then if they are just going to essentially compile ratings from stats?

You can’t get all ratings from stats (for example speed). But this is much more than just about player ratings.

Sounds interesting enough. Not enough to warrant a purchase over NBA 2K9 but interesting nonetheless. I would much rather have seen this used in this year’s Madden in some compacity… I guess it’s an attempt to make NBA Live relevant again.

ramen pasta doesnt need to answer the ncaa question let EA work that out… anyways back to the topic this is EA’s big feature for Live 09? they should worry about the gameplay before adding a feature into the game… EA does this every year, instead of improving the gameplay they add in a “new amazing” feature that supposed to try and push it above 2k but it never does. Theyre doing the same thing with madden with the adaptable AI… I for one could care less, just give me refs, a fixed dynasty mode and some more detail to the actual game and im sold for next year. As for NCAA 09 yes there is glitches but pastas not to blame for it so get off his back. We all know you are still going to go buy the game and enjoy it (even though they wasted there time on adding mascots in when they could have done so much more but im not going to talk about it on a live 09 post)

We’ll considering EA’s track record with roster updates, or lack there of. Then their terrible programming issues circa NCAA 09 as their most recent gaff to no fatique in madden 2 years ago. Do we really expect EA to be able to maintain, keep up with, and handle such a complex idea. It’s like sending a rocket to jupiter when they can’t even get to the moon first.

I have lost almost all faith in EA to do anything right anymore. At least with NBA games (for now, don’t cave in Take 2) I have a choice and I will once again since 2000 take my money and buy NBA 2k.

As a long time NBA Live fan I’ll be the 1st to admit that I’ve been disappointed with Live since 2005. After reading some of Pasta’s impressions on 09, I’m still disappointed to hear that the game still has fundemental flaws such as passing, rebounding, fast breaks, etc..I’ll admit that this feature sounds pretty cool but I do think it was over hyped. I’ll reserve judgement until I see the game in motion. If EA can solidify the gameplay 1st, then I think this feature could really enhance the game. However as I mentioned before, if the gameplay isn’t fluid then this feature won’t really matter.

  • sam1234

Sorry but I am not impressed either. As this was classifed as ground breaking news. Superstars are just that Superstars. Even if Kobe had a bad shooting game, he would bounce back in the next game and get 40 pts. Either him or LeBron will win the scoring title. So the constant updating of real players stats is worthless.

I would have questions as to why they’d do this when any given night could be different for a player. Sometimes you’re just off or struggling. It does add depth to ratings as they would be more “live.” But, I’d rather see them shift around based on your performance during a season, rather than external means.

I agree, Josh. It appears they may have gone ahead too far, leaving behind some gameplay issues that should be resolved first.

I was expecting a little more and will wait until the Final verdict is handed down but I havent bought an NBA Live in a longggg time; and I doubt this feature will sway me from the wings of 2K9

A single night isn’t going to sway things much if at all. Trends will.

EA isn’t who is providing data for this.

This new “innovative” feature is only used for single player games. It only affects the AI and “how” they play. It cant be used in multi-player games either offline or online, which the majority of the users play. Not very useful and surly not groundbreaking news that they tried to keep secret.

Quick EA, you better patent this “great invention” before another company steals it…

    NOT..

I really shouldn’t be responding to comments like these (until later) but I feel the need to clarify. Yes it is used for online play also.
