NCAA Football 09 Sales Numbers

Official NPD sales numbers for July have been released and offer the first opportunity to compare year over year how NCAA Football 09 is faring.

Sales on the 360 were nearly identical to last year. Despite gaining significant user base EA was unable to increase sales at all there. 397,000 this year just as it was with 08. Over with the PS3 however there was a pickup of 86,000 units going from 156,000 to 242,000. With the PS3 playing catch up to the 360 we’ve seen sales increasing there at a higher rate than the user base gained by the 360 in the same time. Meanwhile it is no surprise to see that the Wii version didn’t make it into the top 10 in software sales for the month.

In the previous generation NCAA 06 saw the highest number with 611,000 on the PS2 and 332,000 on the Xbox. Combining the 360 & PS3 with 09 we now have a total that outreaches that of 639,000. That still leaves a difference of 304,000. Last year the PS2 version sold 236,000 in the month, that number is probably about half that this year. Counting in the PS2 and Wii the total number of sales would look to fall short of 06, but it is important to note that even though there may have been less sales the 360 and PS3 versions are bringing in $10 more per copy.

The hardcore crowd seems to be almost fully realized in this generation, with the Wii having the most potential to see a surge. If sub-par releases like NCAA 09 continue on the Wii though that isn’t going to happen. The 360 and PS3 would seem to have marginal room for improvement, with the PS3 likely to close the gap some in coming years.

Madden 09 sales have reportedly been comparable to last year, this after hearing that pre-orders had been down. Analysts are attributing that to the quality of the game as it has been the best received in years.

so the games did need to be more accessible but by not gaining sales i wonder if they will be disappointed by that. looks like overall its probably what they expected to get though. quality games like we’re getting this year will continue strong sales.

I think that the economy may have an impact on game sales. Why buy it now when in two months you can purchases a used copy for $10 – $20 less?

Also, some may have held off on spending their new purchase money on Madden or another title.

The games offers nothing worth getting excited about…The casual audience still doesn’t see a need to buy these football games, and honestly, they’re not missing much…

to be honest with you…maybe the economy would have an effect on it if the target audience was the middle-aged blue collar worker…but you have to realize that the people that are buying NCAA are the 18-25 males, most of which are still enrolled in a place of higher learning…and i don’t know about you…but when my friends and i were at our university money was always tight…but we still always found time to buy two things…booze and video games…so while normally i would have to agree with you, but i believe that in this instance there may be a different situation…if any thing…i think that lower sales has more to do with the public’s lack of confidence in EA and the lack of satisfaction in previous products possibly combined with the lack of a significant improvement in the game from year to year in the mind of the consumer…

i will readily admit…that this is the most fun i have had with NCAA in years…i was really having fun with my Online Dynasty up until my 360 was hit with the RROD…while online play has been unsatisfactory to me…the rest of the game has played nicely for me…though i would hope to see further strides taken with the Campus Legend mode next year, there is always room to go deeper in the Dynasty mode, and obviously the commentary has grown stale at times…but its still a great game…

Ill bet the low pre-sales numbers is partly due to the fact the all of EA’s games this year have had huge freezing issues. I hesitated to buy Madden because of the awfull experience I had with NASCAR 09 and the problems with NCAA. Add that to the dissapointment to the last couple of years with Madden and it shows in the sales numbers, people have lost confidence in EA and Madden.

Lets hope this new producer takes Madden in the right direction and so far IMO I really like the game. I think under this year is just the begining and Madden will be freakin great next year. Look for sales numbers to get better as word of mouth gets out that this year is actually good (unless your having freezing problems).

I bought NCAA 09. on release day.

so in reality NCAA really hasn’t gotten more popular the same people are buying it. year after year like myself.

Yea i bought NCAA also and wow am i never playing that game again.. i think i rather stick with madden, NCAA 08 is so unrealistic at times its almost crazy, for example I played a game online against PENN STATE and i had a opponet put the receiver as qb and run all around the field in the pocket, he would litterally run around for about 40 seconds in the pocket and theres nothing you can do about it because the WR for Penn state (Williams).. is to fast to be caught

Madden is great… until it starts freezing every goddamn game of course!

So upset about it. So many people seem to be having the same issue as well.

Hopefully sales will remain flat so the NFL wises up and allows some competition. Exclusivity benefits no one but EA and its stockholders. Us consumers are MUCH BETTER OFF having a choice in our games.

What happened to the ESPN license? I dont see anything that resembles ESPN in Madden. I’ll bet ESPN is a little upset that EA has done absolutely nothing with the license and I’m sure they realize now it was only used to hurt 2K, not help or promote ESPN.

actually espn didn’t like the way 2k used their license. they want it the way ea is using it with having espn programming content in their games.

Still seems like some good numbers for the month. I think next year’s numbers will be even better ea had some issuse with both madden and ncaa, but I think they are getting better with the next gen machines. On the bad side by the time they have them down another gen just might be out.
