NBA Live 09 Gameplay Video

A new video of NBA Live 09 in action from Microsoft’s recent X08 event has been posted on Youtube. While it isn’t the greatest quality it would arguably be the best representation currently available of how the game plays. No, it isn’t highlight footage cut together that makes it appear you can score at will on offense as many have griped about.

Continue on to view the video which features Oklahoma City @ Toronto and runs for nearly five minutes.

It’s nice to see Oklahoma City in the game, even if the jerseys or arena isn’t correct. Gameplay vids on Youtube are always hit and miss. Sometimes they are great, other times not so much.

Much improved over Live 2008. The AI is much improved. Took me a second to realize that Oklahoma was the CPU. Thought it was user vs. user for a minute.

Dunks definately look better. Gameplay still isn’t fluid enough though it’s making strides. Still saw players going through other players. Passing is still off. Dribbling is still herky jerky. They still don’t have fluid net physics. Some players look way to muscular. Overall it looks like a small improvement over 08. I might rent it.

alot of animation pausing for the low post moves, and the dunks by the big men looked like a delay thingy going on to, PG(calderon) was dribbling and about to go thru his legs, the animation stops and he fires a bullet pass to his teammate, all in one motion? the drive move by westbrook looked like he went thru the defender animation clipping again. Overall it has the look, and the sounds in LIVE have always been top notch, I just don’t see the game a.i acting right, and some of the animations dont show a fluid and animate as a 2k bball game. If I can’t stand watching the moves, I cant play the game. The moves don’t look right, which 2k has had problems with in the past. I’m sure my live fanboy friends will run to pick it up, but for 4 years now, 2k.

Oklahoma City plays it’s opening preseason game in Billings, MT, my hometown, I’m anxiously awaiting their jersey announcement, can’t wait to get a first look.

It’s amazing how long it takes, doesn’t surprise me now that Memphis kept the Grizzlies moniker then.

I am not impressed at all, at 1:04 the OC player just walked thru his defender, many moves, coming after another, do not have any connection, the animation feels like artifical, not digitalized. Player models are still like 14 years old high schools players with pulmonary disease, O’Neil or Bosh looks like the 12 years old Garnett from the far sideline view.

Cheering girls are great, living with the game, I liked the camera angles on playbacks.

OFF: EA and Take2 are having meetings again about selling Take2. Hope it wont happen, coz then the entire 2ksports lineup will be cancelled, as EA assured it.

Afro, I played hundreds of 2k7 and 2k8 ballgames, and never noticed, that a player is just running thru another one. I agree, 2k has got its own downsides, but this got to be a Live disease.
Probably this is the new HYPER FEATURE, if You press LB with the DOWN arrow, your player get invisible, and just simply runs thru the defender for an easy dunk…
But seriously, complaints are good, another thing is, how the developers are listening to these critics. LIVE community is praying since next gen to make the player models more realistic, more mascular, more like an athlete, who is excercising all day, weight-lifting, body-building, more like a MAN, not a child. The player models in Live09 are like in Live06.

LOL. And 2K players with broad shoulders like wrestlers? Or how about the “fluidity of 2K basketball games” Feels like you are playing a game underwater. I agree with Reignman that we must point out flaws, but I’m sure the “going through defender” issue won’t be in the final release. People who play those demos are playing a build from 4-6 weeks prior. I’m waiting for 2K to release their “secret” online feature, because it doesn’t sound like they are doing anything with regards to game play from what I’ve been reading/hearing (and fan boys, don’t say its because the game play is perfect, because its far from it…they are hoping Live flops again, and won’t go back to the drawing board until Live closes the gap..maybe this year).

Some things that I liked after viewing this video about a dozen times (yes I have free time)

    * The pass that Calderon made as he was going out of bounds
    * The A.I’s offense, it took me a minute to realize that this was a user vs. CPU game. The CPU did a pretty good job running the offense and the break.

    * Cheerleader, mascot interactions. They are in the game, but don’t distract from the game play.

    * Rebounding mechanics, so much more improved

    * Quick strike ball handling + ankle breakers is improved. Would eventually like to see a later build with a PG that handles the ball a lot in their offense (Nash, Paul) and see how the CPU utilizes them.

    Things I didn’t like:

    * Post moves seem a little too dominant, but then again it was J.O. against the Oklahoma (Nick Collison) so maybe I should reserve this judgment.

    * Layups from the baseline in a lot of these vids are way too high. This needs to be toned down.

    * Blocking physics. If you swat the ball it should go further away, not fall to the floor within a foot and barely even bounce. The ball should go in different directions (up, down, to the side, out of bounds, in the stands)

    ————-

Side note. Is it just me, or does NBA 09 seem to have a better TV style presentation? I was looking at those videos. Game play sucks, but I like their TV style presentation over Live and 2k.

I think the graphics have improved since 2006. I think in the current gen we aren’t seeing that “wow” factor any more when we see screen shots when it comes to NBA Live as we did in previous generation games. In previous generations, the graphics seemed to improve substantially year after year. I think in the current gen, Live has made improvements and added granularity, but there is only so much they can do.

The video speaks for itself. 2K9 without even having to dissect the inadequacies of this game in comparison to 2K8, 2K7, 2K6, hell even going back to the dreamcast 2K1, it does not match up. I will end any long winded diatribe and refer any person doubting which bball game to purchase this year to that video. I really enjoyed it when I was able to follow it last year and this year I check for it everyday and all I get is Facebreaker. I am trying to be patient and for the last year or so, you have been my main source for sports gaming news, but I am missing your indepth analysis. Like I stated, I feel like as readers we are being shorted some great reading in favor of your”line drive”. Hit us with some hard perspectives and some of your personal experiences all the way through a game. That is all, I really do appreciate all you write and hope for more from you.

Passing is improved, I noticed players stepping out to get the pass…that was a nice small touch. But there are some passes that are floaty. All in all this game is shaping up pretty good. I can see the game overrall possibly getting a higher score overall for improved game play and features. This is going to be an interesting year for basketball.

All I have to say is…..I hope playing defense actually works this year on Nba live 09…I’m tried of seeing the spin move and dunk with Kobe.

I also hope that 2k does not make another game where all you have to learn is the shot release to be successful. If you have it down (the shot) you can shoot a good percentage from almost half court (real talk).

I think you exaggerate but I know what you mean. I could not make mid range shot with Paul Pierce despite his mid rating in the 90s. I could never time his shot right. I really hope NBA Live is great this year but it is nice to have another title to fall back on unlike the NFL and MLB (I have an Xbox 360).

to all the 2k fans:i was a huge 2k fan bball & fball.way back on the dreamcast those titles were way before there time. but when the next gen systems came out,2k didn’t make any real strides interms of effects/player models.in my opinion all there pre next gen games are way better looking than current gen.

interms of game play,2k wins that battle hands down.i’ll go as far to say live hasn’t had good game play since LIVE 95,IMO.. 2k from dreamcast to now has killed live in overall gameplay forever.. but graphics,EA wins, hands down!!!

I think this is a great year for basketball games. For the first time since 2005, I feel that EA is putting out a quality game. 2K will hopefully do the same. Basketball if my favorite sport, and I’m tired of being dissapointed. The lesser of two evils shouldn’t be my option every year.

See this is why I enjoy competition… EA has deff stepped it up this year in improving the GAMEPLAY and presentation because 2k has an amazing basketball franchise. Now if only the NFL could stop being so damn greedy and give that license to more than one company all of us consumers would be able to choose quality games because as much as maddens “improving” I feel like they need a fire lit under there ass to make an amazing game. Dont get me wrong I rented Madden (and will probably buy it when patch 2 comes out if it fixes the franchise issues) and its a great game but it could be so much better.
