Madden 09 Roster Update #2 MIA

Never would I have imagined the news of the second roster update for Madden 09 would turn into such a dramatic event. With EA stating that the update would be out sometime today people were ready to grab it just in time for the opening Sunday slate of NFL games. As time passed and the possibility of it not arriving today became more and more apparent the frustration erupted resulting in the second most commented article in the history of the site. While much of that sentiment is justified some certainly took things over the line though it does raise an interesting discussion.

Last year the updates came at about a rate of once every three weeks which seemed sufficient then. It was just a stretch from mid-November to early January where no updates came that killed that momentum. The second update for Madden 08 came on the Friday before opening Sunday. Not having the rosters this year by now seems to have hit a real sore point in the community.

We are heading into the releases of NBA Live 09 and NBA 2K9 both of which are providing updated rosters in a unique but advanced way. Live uses its 365 which will update the game on a daily basis with not just transactions and starters/reserves but also tendencies and streaks. NBA 2K9′s big news appears to have leaked in that the game will update anytime a change is made to the rosters on NBA.com, though this would seem to be limited to just the rosters and not ratings or anything else along those lines.

As consumers become accustomed to this they are going to expect more frequent and more accurate roster updates in other titles as well. Given the popularity and exposure of one like Madden that is certainly a reasonable expectation to have. Madden has the NFL license so if it were to come to something like drawing the rosters off the official depth charts on NFL.com that shouldn’t seem like a far fetched idea. They would still have to go in and make adjustments to areas such as ratings and player appearance manually but the resources should be there to make it a more fluid process.

Once the season begins the roster updates become more about ratings and injuries than about player movement. What makes this second update so anticipated is that there are a lot of those. Hopefully they get it out ASAP and evaluate better ways to offer the roster updates next year.

Okay sdot. Sorry I’ve been an a$$ to everybody. I’m frusterated. You are right. But with lets say EA sold only 10,000 games at 60 dollars each. That’s like $600,000 in sales. Tell me they couldn’t upgrade with that much money. They actually sold over 1 mil. That’s at least $60 million in profit. See my point?

Kaine you seem to be a bit confused. Just because EA sells A amount of games at B price does not mean they make A times B in profit. You have to factor in the developmental costs, the salaries of the workers, and the fact that just because the game costs $60 bucks in store does not mean that EA makes 60. The store has to make money too. So although EA does make profit on Madden most likely, it is not as simple of an equation as you imply, the profit they make may be deemed to be of better use somewhere else in the company in their mind.

I understand where youre coming from… this game could do so much to make this game AMAZING but what did they do this year?… they added a feature that puts a number on how good you play and give you the option to REWIND and do a play all over again and add some camera bulbs… yes this game is a huge improvement but theres so much missing and ppl are frustrated and after this roster update BS ppl complain about other things just because the roster update is only the tip of the iceberg… EA really needs to step it up because sooner or later alot of ppl arent going to buy there game and they wont be able to sit back and count there money.

Also one question… is there anyone at EA who plays football or watches it because everytime i go into madden forums me and other ppl who have played and follow football all have very similar ideas that could make the game that much better… what i dont understand is if the majority of the consumers come up with the same ideas how does NO ONE at EA pick up or think of the same ideas… before madden 09 came out i never heard a madden fan say “we need a feature to rewind a play and play it again”… again just ranting

100% agreed! It amazes me that not only is EA a multibillion dollar company, but they also own the NFL liscence and the can’t even get a timely roster update out before the start of the season. Not to mention their lack of ability to pay attention to details in the game. 2009 & the sidelines still look like crap? No refs or chaingangs? Really EA? I know there will be those EA fanboys that’ll say “Well don’t buy the game then”. Well that’s easier said then done being that Madden is the only NFL game available. Get your sh*t together EA! “If your not gonna take care of business, stop takin up space!”

You are absolutely right. I noticed that after I sent it out. But they are turning out big profits. I don’t blame them for that. I do blame for the crappy service. For some of it I blame us for buying this product year after year.

One question.. Has anyone seen Jay Cutler in this game? I mean the guy looks like a damn string of yarn. Every kicker and punter in the game has more bulk than he does. The guy is 6’4” 230lbs.. I think its fucking hilarious how little he is displayed. Im sorry but Madden is just a perennial dissappointment to me. I continue buying it hoping that one year it will be close to the way it should be. They’ve been doing this for 20 years now, you’d think they’d have a clue at this point.

I agree with everyone in their frustration concerning the “supposed” roster update, hell I’ve been waiting myself to get my Franchise season underway! But in the end, there is nothing that we can do about it as fans but either deal with it or just don’t spend the $60 bucks and have nothing to rant about. Hopefully the update will come tomorrow but if not, do we just sit in Madden forums and bash each other like we’re 12 years old again? It would be nice if EA sports would post some type of response to the outroar caused by everyone waiting ever since Thursday day for something that never materialized, (that’s only a smart business move), but until then everyone should just chill and enjoy the first full weekend of the very sport that makes us want to play Madden in the first place.

i honestly dont think i would be this worked up about the update if i wouldnt have came across this site….but, seeing as i have, WHERE THE H*LL ARE THE ROSTER UPDATES?! I have done the big, obvious moves, but I cant add Adam Jones to the Cowboys if….THE GUY ISN’T EVEN ON THE GAME! I like the idea of “Ocho Cinco” having his name on his jersey, but the nfl hasnt even changed it yet…i just want Adam Jones…PLEASE?!?!?!?!

Fellows the reality is they don’t give a damn!!!! They are aware Tens of Thousands are upset about this and not one Rep. from EA has bothered to update. Well over on OS someone mentioned a it’s a server issue. YEAH RIGHT they don’t have these rosters ready. Plain and Simple. EA has our $ so why rush. Nobody from EA is working on this issue right now. Come on guys this is BS
