Tom Brady Injury Will Make Roster Update Obsolete

by
Posted September 7th, 2008 at 4:49 pm

In an ironic turn of events the injury that appears to have ended Tom Brady’s season will also put a big hole in the delayed roster update for Madden 09 that has been heavily discussed over the weekend. The relief that will come when the update finally does arrive will only be followed by the anticipation of the next one given the dramatic ramifications of the injury. The update will already be severely out of date.

While it was absent some recent transactions (along with not including Chad Johnson’s name change to Ocho Cinco) this injury will impact online play to an extent only imagined by a handful of players in the league.

So that just brings back the importance of finding a better roster updating solution. If this was one of the NBA games than Tom Brady may have been dropped down the depth chart or placed on the IR as early as tomorrow. While the Patriots will still have a strong team with Randy Moss at WR their appeal certainly will be greatly diminished to the online crowd.
So, we know this update is being delayed even more… Which is going to cause an uproar.

But even more importantly (at the moment)… Do you have any information on when the 2nd patch will be released? I’m REALLY looking forward to seeing how they’ve tweaked progression.
I asked the same question on a different thread and was told that it’s probably still a few weeks away. I too am looking forward to the patch more so than the roster update. As far as I’m concerned roster updates are just a bonus that come along with next-gen, as just a few years ago you were stuck with the same roster until next year’s game came out (unless you did like me and make all the changes manually). But patches are just lazy, as it’s a way of putting out poorly tested games on-time because they can always fix them later. Really, a lot of these glitches, roster progression especially, should have been spotted easily during testing. All of this leads to one big question, are EA’s testers even Madden players, or just some guys they bring in from the street?

I agree with everyone who is more concerned about when the next patch is posted then the next roster update. What EA should do now is fix the roster update, put Brady on IR and then release it, which to me doesn’t seem to be that hard to do. But, I wouldn’t be surprised if the roster update is released Tuesday and Brady is not on the IR and Chad Johnson’s name hasn’t been changed. Also, everyone touting the NBA Live 365 idea should really wait and see if it actually works. I know they hired on a company to handle the stats and updates for NBA Live but with EA nothing seems to live up to hype. “First sports game that adapts to you”…in my opinion it doesn’t really adapt to how I play.

Simms is no Tom Brady, but he’s a lot more experienced than Matt Cassell and Kevin O’Donnell, the other QB on the Pats roster. There aren’t a whole lot of good QB’s unemployed right now, so the Pats don’t have too many choices. Maybe try to make a trade……The Saints backup is Brunnell, the Redskins is Todd Collins. The Colts released Quin Gray, who had some success in Jax…surprised he’s not on the short list…

Two words…Dante Culpepper. I know he just “retired” but it would be awesome to see him re-unite with Moss. Plus no one knows how good Matt Cassel will be. It was just seven years ago when Bledsoe got hurt and “all was lost” for the Patriots. This guy has had some life, goes to the little league world series final as a kid and then backs up Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart at USC (two Heisman trophy winners). So really no one has any idea how good this guy can be. Not to mention that the Patriots are still the reigning AFC champs…all I’m trying to say is that you Jets fans who are saying you have the divison locked now need to be careful, I wouldn’t count the Patriots out of anything yet.

I think Culpepper burned a lot of bridges with NFL teams, don’t want to say “blacklisted”, but he has been outspoken about a lot of things that he probably should have not been. That being said, he has not looked good the last couple of seasons. He’s not the same QB as he was in 2001-2003.

I’m no Patriots fan but I would love to see them sign up Daunte Culpepper.

Not only do I still think he has a lot to offer who wouldnt want to see his combination with Moss again?

Guys! Thats why they put Madden 93 in the collector’s edition for times like this. I feel like I’m 12 again and have no need for roster updates let alone names at all. Just to hear Madden say “where’d that truck come from” in that all too cool 16 bit voice of his is bringing back so many awsome memories. Thanks EA!
