Is Spectator Mode Still Desired?

Over the past few years the idea of a spectator mode has generated a lot of interest. Other games have implemented it successfully though it is difficult to gauge how much it is utilized. The thought with a sports game would be how it would allow you to watch important games between friends, watch league games which could even be for the purpose of scouting, and just jumping in other highly anticipated match-ups.

While playing NHL 09’s EASHL it hit me that the game already had a form of spectator mode built in. When penalized and in the box you just sit there and watch. Now it isn’t the best perspective to watch a full game from so they would need to add at least one different camera angle, but essentially the ability to sit in a game is already there. EA has stated that they are looking to get spectator mode built in to games such as Madden in the future. Knowing that NHL somewhat has it already can lead you to believe we are getting closer to that being realized.

With having the ability to upload video highlights and screenshots I’ve started to wonder if spectator mode is as desired as it used to be. Obviously most people get the game to play but there are occasions where just watching one as it is played could be appealing. Are there those of you out there who would spend time spectating games?

With the highlight updating…why bother spectating? Why waste an entire game’s worth of time watching someone else play in case something interesting happens when you could play a game yourself and watch the highlights from the other game at your leisure?

i would love this to be in madden in the future. for those people in leagues, watching mathups of division rivals and playoff games would add alot of new elements to league play and excitement.

I would definately want a spectator mode in Madden. It would be fun to find the best player and see what he’s doing, or just watch a random game to find new ways of playing.

CPU VS CPU no i wouldnt want ot watch a full game. but you know sometimes my frined and i our both playing madden at the same time telling each other wats happenng in our games. and maybe mine finishes first and his has 2 minutes left and its a tie. well yeah i liked to see wats going to happen possibly give advice (thats the downside of this) you know me and my friend love doing that and we have gone over this discussion before. instead of popping up my friends list to see what the score is let us jump in. i still think its a great idea but no i dont think it will be overly popular.

Would love a specator mode in Madden. I know tons of guys in our league would tune in just to watch the playoff games and the Super Bowl. I’ve been hoping something like this turns up for a while if not in Madden 2010.

Probably the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard of. Turn on a sports game on cable / satellite to experience spectator mode.

What’s next, a video game where you play as a guy playing a video game?

I’d use it when I first got the game to see how it is. If I were in a league, then it’d be really useful to watch how people play, or to watch league games that you need a specific team to lose for your team to climb in the standings. To watch exhibition games, I wouldn’t use it much, to watch league games, different story. So for me, the leagues need to be good for spectator mode to be worth while.

I would absolutely love a spectator mode. For example, in my NCAA Football 09 Online Dynasty I was really wanting to watch a couple of my friends play a crucial late-season game. Even an updated GameCast channel ala Yahoo Fantasy Sports would be absolutely splendid!

It is very much needed for leagues especially. The Commissioner can hop in and “referee” a game to make sure people are playing inside the rules. When you are in the playoffs or championship game, it would be interesting for the rest of the league members to be able to hop into a game and spectate and voice chat with other spectators. Or even just to watch a highly anticipated matchup, or scout your next opponent. Kinda like spectating in Socom or COD4. It’s great in shooters, it would be in sports games also. I also think it would help build the community more, and immerse gamers into what’s going on.

Madden already has had a gamecast for a few years but it will nice to have spectator mode or atleast some highlights(like tds, turnovers, big first downs) from the game anyone can see. I think a lot of people will use it if they knew it was there. It could be beneficial to what a friend you can never beat. You can sit down and try to figure out a game plan for them while not playing. I would use this feature occasionally. This would be similar to Gotham TV from Project Gotham or Forza TV where you could watch either friends or top players race.

I could see spectator mode being beneficial in on-line tournaments where you would be able to view your upcoming opponents and get a feel for their style of play. This could work quite well with the sports genre of course but with other games as well, such as fighting games that implement strategy (Soul Caliber for eg:). I think that it would also make on-line tournys in games like Madden a bit more appealing and would give the tourny experience a more “real” feel to it.

I would definitely like to see a spectator mode in some of EA’s games. As a commisioner of on SEC only online dynasty, there are some big matchups throughout the season that I would LOVE to be able to watch…. not to mention the conference championship games. I’ve loved this concept and enjoyed being able to spectate in PGR. Ad it EA!!

I wouldn’t watch games often, but it would be cool to watch your friends play in a big bowl game on NCAA or the playoffs or Super Bowl in Madden. Of course it would have to be an option that would not cause performance problems (additional lag or anything). I think it is worth EA adding to the games at some point. I just wouldn’t put the need for it above other things like Online Franchises for every title, better presentation, etc. So in summary yes I think they should add it, but not right now at the cost of other needed upgrades.

Hey Jonathon… twist words as much as you like but you did, in fact, point the finger and laugh at those who do enjoy watching the occasional match-up. It’s sentences like… “i hope you guys are joking…you seriously enjoy watching other people play games?” and… “you really want to waste your time watching someone else play when you could be playing and improving your game instead? wow…”. If you cannot see the negative connotations in what you are saying then you are truly so self-centered that you cannot see the forrest through the trees.

There are certainly other ways to scout a teams tendencies but the most enjoyment most would get out of a feature like this would to be able to watch a big match-up like conference championships, bowl games, etc. PGR did it nicely and shows that it can be done without affecting player gameplay.
