After having to wait a few days from the initial time the second patch for Madden 09 was thought to go live it is now out for the 360 and PS3. As long as your console is connected online you will be automatically prompted to download the patch when next starting up the game. You will not have to restart franchise mode for the effects of the patch to come through.
Continue on to view all of the changes and feel free to leave your impressions of the game after the patch in the comments. Initial response seems to be that the gameplay related improvements have proven to be valuable, the CPU now takes too long to snap the ball even on extra points, and it may not have fixed freezes that some people have experienced in franchise mode.
Update: If you experienced freezing in franchise prior to the patch you will have to start over. Any that hadn’t previously had issues with freezing should be fine to continue.
1. Kicking play disconnect: If two opponents play a game with two different camera angles, in any situation where a game winning or tying kick was to be made, a disconnect could occur. “ActionCam” forces the game to go into slow-motion to add drama to these late kicks, but unfortunately the Classic camera does not, thus forcing the “disconnect”. This has been fixed…all cameras can still be used as well.
2. Stability issues in the play call / halftime highlights / postgame highlights screens (especially in Franchise mode after training games): This was a hard one to track down as not everyone was seeing it , we did find the issue however with some Instant Replay / cache corruption, and have a fix ready for patch 2.
3. Stability issues with Madden IQ end of game popup: This has been fixed.
4. “WR direct snap” exploit: Cheesers found an exploit to direct snap to a WR for easy short yardage gain. Not only are we fixing this play (i.e. we aren’t removing it), we are also going to be re-setting records for anyone with a winning record that has been found to be using this play.
5. Franchise Progression / Regression (or lack thereof): The lack of higher numbers was a tuning value that I think everyone agreed was just too low. This has been juiced up so you should see more realistic progression now.
Additional info I obtained on what the progression fix entails:
1) The Edit Player Progression Bug. So now edited players and created players will progress like normal. Before, anytime you edited a player’s ratings, he would then never progress in your franchise.
2) Fixed a major bug that stopped awarding progression points after the top 2-3 players at a position. So before, only 2-3 players per position were getting awarded the proper progression points. That has been fixed now, all players are now being assigned the proper progression points.
6. Edited players don’t progress: Players were not progressing after their jersey number (or pretty much any other attribute). This has been fixed.
7. Stability issue when exiting Madden ‘93 in CE version: This has been fixed.
8. Deep ball glitch: Some enterprising gamers found a way to throw a deep ball while crossing the LOS and hit a receiver wide open at a decent rate. We addressed this by making sure the DB will no longer break on the ball when the QB crosses the line while throwing.
9. CPU running out of bounds: This bug appears when the CPU tries to switch hands while running to the sidelines. This is fixed for patch 2.
10. Penalty sliders ineffective: A common complaint from the hardcore community was the lack of effect from the penalty sliders. We increased these substantially for patch 2.
11. Field degradation: Another common complaint was the lack of field degradation. Our effect was very subtle, which was also getting overshadowed by our lighting and post effects, so we increased this effect for the patch.
12. Stability issue with the Eagles and a full ring meter: We found and fixed a rare issue where the gamer could run into stability issues while using the Eagles in mini-game with a ring meter that was completely full.
13. Play call screen hitch: We found and fixed a bug that was causing a noticeable hitch when exiting the play call screen
14. Prevent Defense issue: We found and fixed an issue where defenders sharing a deep zone/prevent assignment would loosen their coverage (because they thought the other guy was covering for them), which allowed the receiver to get behind them even though they were in Prevent.
15. Brett Favre stats: With the late addition of Brett Favre, we were not able to get his Career and Season statistics into the game for the roster update. This has now been added for patch 2.
16. Defensive Preplay Mis-cue: We found and fixed an issue where defenders would leave their man wide open in a Cover 3.
17. CPU quick-snap: A very common complaint on the forums was the speed at which the CPU snapped the ball. We added a random length of time (no less than 5 seconds) for the CPU to wait and even make pre-play adjustments.
18. Online playbook switch: We found and fixed an issue where playbooks were re-setting to the defaults after the playbook select popup was closed.
19. Additional fixes to situations where the game would freeze.
i just don’t understand why its sooooo hard to run the bal i have spoken to alot of players and they have the same question. linemen just don’t make their blocks they wander around like they have no sence of whats going on. even before you get the ball players are already in the back field and you have no chance at all.its no fun at all when you just pass pass and pass all the time. but the computer players make perfect blocks why is that?
its no fun and when its no fun its a bad game.
am i wrong? am i right please let me know. p.s.

Running the ball is not hard at all, getting 3.5 yards on a run play is good/great. when you learn running plays that get you 3-5, you stick with those, because you learn how to manuever in those plays that will turn a defensive breakdown into a 10-15 yard game. Also what down you run on is important too, if you are able to have a positive play on first down, second down is a great run down, even if your play isn’t successful on first down, second down is great run down. Dont be intimidated by player icons, good plays work vs any team, start with I form Iso, its really the best running play in football period, I form Iso and I twin fb dive. you can start with that. Make sure any counter play is run to the strong side, I.E tight end and fullback side. thats all for now.

If you cant get past 12% more than likely it is your modem or internet connection. If you are using a modem make sure the cable that you are using to connect the cable in the wall to the modem is short and straight. The connection is sensitive and it will often disconect from the internet if the cable is bent or wound up. If you are not using a cable modem it still probably is your connection and you should inspect your hook up and wires. This maybe a factor; then your last resort could be replacing the internet/ethernet cords. It has to be some sort of discrepency in your connections that is causing you to lose the connecction at around 12%. I hope and pray I was able to help

EA doesn’t have to do a thing for us. They have a monopoly on the market of NFL football games. They can put out a crappy game if they wanted and their is nothing you can do about it. I would love for EA to make a better Madden game but don’t sit here and expect that they owe us that because they don’t. In the end its a business and not about the gamers or their experience.

I would like to know if you people that constantly complain about every little thing wrong with this game or any other game, have lives besides video games. Work, career, girlfriend? Anything? I mean if your 18 or under, thats fine. But if you are older than 18 and get this heated over video games, look at yourself in the mirror. I found this web-site out a few weeks ago, and thought it was awesome. I’m 25 and have been playing Madden and sports games in general for the last 15 years, and really enjoyed this site. However you chronic complainers and winers just ruin what is otherwise an outstanding forum for sports gamers. Have fun with the game, realize that it is a GAME. If you want real football, they do actually sell them at sporting goods stores, or Wal-Mart for god sakes. But please…….stop crying that the back-up tight end for the Dolphins wears the wrong face mask, or that Adrian Peterson should be a 96 and not a 98. Enjoy what you have. Which is a very, very solid game. Yea……..game.

I played online last night (PS3) in a rain game, and the jerseys didn’t even get dirty like before… not even any field degradation? Has anyone else had this? Was it a fluke?
September 24, 2008 at 11:03 am
is this a downgrade or a patch?
September 24, 2008 at 11:19 am
Since i installed the patch i haven’t been able to play two player matches (not online matches) with my buddys. Once it made it past the first half
September 24, 2008 at 12:01 pm
so what’s worse? the old glitches or new glitches?
i can barely get through a franchise game without it hanging on me now, but
the game sounds nearly unusable following the patch.
what sucks now is that even IF EA addresses these new issues, it’s going to
be at least a month before we see anything.
Pasta, do you know if they do any kind of testing? We’ve complained for years
that it seems EA/Tiburon don’t really play their own game before shipping it out.
September 24, 2008 at 2:40 pm
Dont come on this site and say I dont understand why people complain about every little thing. We are complaining because we love Madden and this game has the chance to be the best one ever. The graphica and animations are awesome. Now that they have fixed the players running out of the bounds they need to fix the freeze issues that everyone is obviously still having and cut some of the time off where the QB just sits there before the snapo just to be sitting there. Why wait ten seconds when you are kicking an extra point or field goal. This doesnt make sense. I had to switch to 8 min. quarters to get the real life stats that players that get. Its a big difference between 5 or 6 min quaters. It takes too long to play that kind of game. EA needs to make the corrections because if they do they have a true prize winner on their hands. The best Madden ever. Thats why we are complaining you idiots.
September 24, 2008 at 3:06 pm
Going to 7 or 8 minute quarters makes the game sooo long.
But, it wouldn’t be as much of an issue if we had in game saves.
That is a major thing EA needs to put in next year. And accelerated clock.
September 24, 2008 at 3:20 pm
LOL at EA and the long snap. Good job on the programming EA! Let’s make out game more sim by making the human player wait all day long. Who programmed this, a 4 year old? LOL, my goldfish has more sense than Tiberon.
September 24, 2008 at 3:41 pm
it’s just incredibly frustrating. i mean…. it’s a GAME… it’s supposed to be … i dunno… FUN? i love a good challenge, but i’m pretty sure a $90 game isn’t supposed to annoy the s&!t out of you. tryign to figure out how to deal with glitches and mid-game crashing aren’t the kind of challenges i’m looking for.
September 24, 2008 at 4:22 pm
I don’t know if anyone has touched on this and I don’t feel like sifting through all the posts but this might help some people in regards to franchise freezing. I did a lot of testing/simming to figure out why my franchise would always freeze, I played through 2 different franchises to 4 seasons and 3 seasons respectively before it froze. I noticed that it happened to me most often when progressing to regular season from pre-season and doing trades or making significant roster changes to any one team(perhaps due to the glitch rendering teams unable to properly allocate players in required roster spots).
What I then did was sim several franchise to 5 or 6 seasons each. I would back up my franchise before it EVER had to simulate anything. Every time that “Simulating…” appears it seems like the franchise is at risk for corruption. Every time it did freeze I just went back to a save before the last simulation and it worked perfectly. I now am successfully in my 6th season and everything is fine. I hope this helps someone, because it seems like everyone has different problems.

Just curious what particular player most people have control of at the snap on DEFENSE. I always select a lineman and try to jump the snap or call run or pass, am I wasting my time?
September 24, 2008 at 7:14 pm
Not sure about anyone else but I have never gotten this game to play at all on my PS3. My players do not move. I hear action in the background but nothing on screen. On the kickoff, the ball is kicked but none of the players move so the ball ends up on the 20 yard line. Then when I cal my 1st play, the players never leave the huddle so a delay of game penalty is called. This continues on each play. The players never go to the line of scrimmage. What is going on here?
Also, even in training mode, I can never move my player forward, sideways or backwards. I can turn the player in a direction but never get him to move.
This game is about to go back if I can’t get this figured out.
September 24, 2008 at 11:25 pm
Good Job by ea, Now there are penalties and a really field with heavy rain.
This is the first (that i remember) pacth that corrects and it feels better a game in worlwide console gaming.

You are totally right; thats why the game sucks so bad because the put out crap and we allow them to every year! The only way we can get what we want is if we band together and refuse to purchase thier BS! Humans are not that smart though, a person is, but not people; all they do is blow alot of hot steam on forums but do nothing to try to solve the problem.

Seriously the only thing that needs to be fixed in this game is the difficulty of running the ball.
Flat-out is not going to happen against the CPU. I can do a fantasy draft getting the top O-Lineman in the game and AD or Steven Jackson and can’t get 100 yards in a 6 minute game rushing more than 30 times!
If ya’ll know how I can fix this or have the same problem please tell me.
September 25, 2008 at 10:10 am
I downloaded the patch last night and played two games in my franchise, here are my thoughts:
1.) The CPU snap issue really isnt that big of a deal. It takes me roughly about 5-10 seconds to pick a play after seeing what kind of package the offense is running. Then also around 5 seconds or so to make my pre-snap defensive reads. So in all actuality its only about an extra 3-5 seconds or so, and plus the CPU actually trys to draw you off-sides, which is cool. All in all to me, this is not that bad. Partially annoying on extra points, that I agree with.
2.) The CPU is better and more competitive. I was 2-0 with the Ravens on my franchise, and actually lost my next two games last night to Cleveland and Pitt. Which pissed me off, but also is cool, b/c winning every game is no fun either. I’m playing on the All-Pro level, which is cool. They actually got me like 2 or 3 times with throws into the flats, where the back actually took the ball upfield.
3.) I played in a rain game, and the field got muddy, players were covered. Looked sick. Was very impressed by that.
All in all, I’m happy with the patch, and think it was a solid job by EA.

I play on the All Madden skill level and in my franchise, which I use the Bucs, I traded for Chris Johnson who is the running back I think for the Titans, he is a rookie. For the preseason, which I only allowed him to play the first half of the games, he russhed for almost 300 yards and 3 touchdowns, his longest rush was for 72 yards. This game is the closest it has ever been to real life gameplay in the NFL. You have to look, and wait for the open holes. When the ball is snapped and handed to your running back dont use the speed burst just yet, just use the joystick, locate a hole then use the speed burst to get through it. The o-line also plays a huge role, I traded for some of the better lineman in the league and on that first game after is where I broke the 72 yarder to the house. You have to run behind blocks, make blocs with lineman, look for the hole, then get through it. Just like the NFL not everyback is going to rip up the feild inless he is one of the best. it is not the game it is your skill level, not trying to be rude. I run well but my passing sux…we both just need to get better.

I agree, in other maddens I use to go undefeated and won 10 str8 Super Bowls which is not fun at ALL! This game is challeging all together and the CPU is real copetitive. The CPU snaps are realistic and allows me to actually see the artwork when they run up to the line, then get my defense ready for the play, I could finally make pre-snap adjustsments on defense now!

All in all, I’m happy with the patch, and think it was a solid job by EA.
cool. thanks for the post! makes me feel quite a bit better. GO RAVENS!

Well I played the packers against the cowboys, and the CPU Romo played like a GOD. Hit about every pass and Marion Barber was unstoppable. A little TOO much help for the CPU players I think. The running improved a bit

OMG THIS LONG SNAP SUXXORS.
September 25, 2008 at 3:52 pm
When does the roster update this week come out?
September 25, 2008 at 5:27 pm
The only aspect of the new cpu snap delay that bothers me is that the cpu now takes WAY to long to kick the friggin ball or snap for the point after. EA said their pre-patch field degradation effect was very subtle. Perhaps their attempt to address game freezes in this patch was very subtle as well. Seriously EA, take more pride in the testing of your products and patches. And FIX the god-like quarterback completion ratio on pro and higher skill settings.
That all being said, Madden 09 is still a great game! And if EA would go one more extra mile to seriously address a few issues, it could be their best ever. But if you read the producer blog, it looks like they are soley lookin toward Madden 2010, so don’t hold your breath for any new patches.
Peace all.

too bad they made a half-hearted effort on ‘09, I’d say ‘08 plays more realistically. Ridiculous you can’t stop the pass on All Pro.

Running the ball has been more of a challenge for me.

do you have to be logged on to xbox live gold to be able to download the patch?

Ratings Up*
WR Brandon Lloyd – Bears – 75 to 78 – Has been the #1 receiver on the Bears on what is a surprising passing game.
DT Dusty Dvoracek – Bears – 77 to 80 – Has 8 solo tackles and 9 total tackles through 3 games, Tommie Harris has 3 tackles.
QB Carson Palmer – Bengals – 94 to 95 – Something didn’t feel right about this, and Carson proved it. Played very well against a good Giants defense despite a busted nose and minimal pass blocking.
LB Alex Hall – Browns – 61 to 68 – Created several QB pressures with a sack in Week 3.
LT Donald Penn – Bucs – 76 to 80 – Has been a solid starter for the Bucs for a year now.
QB Brian Griese – Bucs – 77 to 78 – Threw for over 400 yards in a wild game vs. the Bears.
WR Antonio Bryant – Bucs – 77 to 79 – Had a 10 catch 138 yard game in Week 3 vs. the Bears.
DE Turk McBride – Chiefs – 75 to 78 – Has played better this year racking up 12 tackles and 3 tackles for loss.
HB Felix Jones – Cowboys – 81 to 82 – Looks just as fast on grass as he does on carpet. Up to 97 speed.
LB Tim Dobbins – Chargers – 65 to 73 – Is now in the rotation at MLB after being a star on special teams for several seasons.
G Ike Ndukwe – Dolphins – 75 to 79 – Worked well with the rest of the Dolphins O-line on Ronnie’s big day.
DE John Abraham – Falcons – 92 to 93 – Leads the NFL with 6 sacks. Beat up on Jeff Backus and a rookie LT in KC.
G Harvey Dahl – Falcons – 76 to 79 – Who? The starting RG in Atlanta paving the way for the Burner Turner.
G Justin Blalock – Falcons – 77 to 79 – Might be finding his niche after struggling badly last year, especially in pass protection.
G Uche Nwaneri – Jaguars – 72 to 74 – Now starting at LG for the Jags, the Jags ran wild in week 3 against an undersized Colts front.
G Daryn Colledge – Packers – 77 to 79 – Working well with an injured interior of the Packers offensive line.
WR Greg Jennings – Packers – 93 to 94 – Superstar in the making. Him and Aaron Rodgers will be a part of a lot of big plays.
DE Kalimba Edwards – Raiders – 76 to 79 – Got the better of Pro Bowler LT Jason Peters on pass rushing situations in Week 3.
HB Michael Bush – Raiders – 79 to 80 – Looks all the way back from injuries. Part of a 3 headed monster for the Raiders at running back.
FS Jim Leonhard – Ravens – 78 to 79 – Played a great game, including several great kick returns, filling in for injured Dawan Landry.
T Zach Strief – Saints – 65 to 69 – Filled in for LT Jamaal Brown vs. the Broncos in a wild shoot out vs. the Broncos. Brees threw 48 times.
CB Bryant McFadden – Steelers – 85 to 86 – Played very well last season as the nickel corner and has filled in for injured Deshea Townsend to the tune of 2 INT’s and 5 pass breakups.
HB Steve Slaton – Texans – 77 to 79 – Busted a 50 yard run vs. the Titans on his 116 yard and a TD day in week 3. His role as a major part of the offense seems secure.
*Few minor ratings changes not noted due to time
Ratings Down
WR Devin Hester – Bears – 81 to 79 – Has caught 2 balls for 13 yards. Not a part of the offense and seems to only be a special teamer.
LT Levi Jones – Bengals – 88 to 87 – Was dominated by Kiwanuka in week 3.
WR Darrell Jackson – Broncos – 83 to 81 – Has slid down the Broncos depth chart, all those passing yards and he is not involved.
QB Derek Anderson – Browns – 87 to 85 – Might not be all the way back. Looks to have a couple starts left on a Browns team heading for a losing record.
LB Kamerion Wimbley – Browns – 88 to 87 – Only had 5 sacks last year rushing the passer, this year he has done nothing.
QB Jeff Garcia – Bucs – 89 to 87 – His benching might be more personal, but only an injury or a couple terrible performances will see him back as the starter.
CB Ronde Barber – Bucs – 92 to 91 – Has lost a step, got picked on last week vs. the Bears.
WR Joey Galloway – Bucs – 87 to 86 – Has lost a step, injured a ton and looks disinterested.
LG Brian Waters – Chiefs – 91 to 87 – Bad timing he goes down 4 points after the Chiefs best running game in a while, but he is near the end.
S Bob Sanders – Colts – 99 to 98 – Loses his 99 cause he can’t stay on the field. Still not a bigger difference maker on the defensive side of the ball.
CB Adam Jones – Cowboys – 86 to 83 – Looks like a player that has been out of the league for a while. Would have thought always trying to cover TO would have helped more.
DE Jamaal Anderson – Falcons – 83 to 81 – Still waiting on his first career sack after being a top 10 pick a year ago.
TE Vernon Davis – 49ers – 87 to 85 – A lot of people saw him catching more than 4 passes in his first 3 games, big disappointment.
DE Reggie Hayward – Jaguars – 86 to 83 – Had 27.5 sacks over a 3 year span, since then has 4.5 over 3 years including a year out injured.
WR Dennis Northcutt – Jaguars – 81 to 79 – Hasn’t done too much on a Jags passing attack that was missing WR Jerry Porter and the invisible Reggie Williams. Matt Jones has stepped up.
CB Al Harris – Packers – 93 to 92 – Before his spleen was lacerated, looked slow vs. Detroit. Was underrated for a long time and he might be getting old now as people know his name.
T Chad Clifton – Packers – 95 to 94 – Got beat up by DeMarcus Ware which shouldn’t be a story, but that wouldn’t have happened a couple years ago.
T Mark Tauscher – Packers – 94 to 93 – Commits too many penalties and looked a little old vs. Dallas.
WR Randy Moss – Patriots – 99 to 98 – Gave a pathetic effort in week 3 whether not going up for an underthrown duck or his blocking. Looks unhappy and won’t be the same threat without the Brady deep ball.
CB Tye Hill – Rams – 86 to 81 – Just got his starting job back after the release of CB Fakhir Brown. This was supposed to be his big year but hasn’t turned out that way.
DT La’Roi Glover – Rams – 84 to 82 – Just benched on the Rams defensive line, that says it all.
QB Marc Bulger – Rams – 89 to 88 – Just benched for Trent Green, will have his job back in 2 weeks whether due to injury or injury.
S Corey Chavous – Rams – 82 to 79 – Has been fading for a long time, one of the only secondary’s he could start in.
HB Ray Rice – Ravens – 80 to 78 – This guy hasn’t been as good as advertised, Willis and McClain seem to have the running game under control.
DE Jason Taylor – Redskins – 98 to 97 – Is injured and hasn’t made the overwhelming difference some thought he may. Now he is injured.
DT Brian Young – Saints – 85 to 82 – Long time overdue. High effort player and can’t get off blocks anymore.
LT Marvel Smith – Steelers – 88 to 87 – Big Ben took a beating last week vs. Philly.
TE Alge Crumpler – Titans – 86 to 83 – Bo Scaife has double the catches and double the yards of Alge.
Injuries
C Tom Nalen – Broncos – IR
LB Dan Connor – Panthers – IR
New Roster Update For This Week GUYS
September 26, 2008 at 12:49 pm
When will this updated become available, if its like last week, we will be waiting until at least Tuesday.
September 26, 2008 at 7:38 pm
I dont kno if anyone else is having this problem, but whenever i try to download the patch it freezes mid-download, any idea why this is happening n how i can fix it
September 28, 2008 at 8:13 pm
Ok, thanks “jayson” for your input i will deff try waiting and being more patient for the holes. However, can you explain the CPU throwing the ball with reckless abandon and completing 80% of their passes every game. I wish i could blame it on my skill level and say i suck but really the defense is not tight enough or the QB’s are too aware. I’m not sure buy thats another problem i’ve been having
September 28, 2008 at 10:15 pm
I haven’t seen any progression or regression since downloading patch#2. I play a lot of franchise mode but its not fun without players getting better. Do i need to start a new franchise or does it just not work.
September 29, 2008 at 11:47 am
Hey..anyone still having issues with Freezing EVEN AFTER the patch download? I’m on a 360 and it’s STILL FREEZING! Any ideas??
September 29, 2008 at 6:59 pm
Hata:
The CPU pisses me off too; however, I think this year is trying to simulate real life. You have to throw in different packages, zones, and blitzes. I also suspect that you also have to have good players and a good defense. I think the better the player the better the chances of making a good play on the ball. In my franchise once i build my defense up to A+ caliber Ill test my theory; if the QB still makes alot of passes Ill chalk it up to faulty programming. Right now Ill just say this year is like the real NFL…a battle every week!
