NBA Academy: Part One

One of the most intriguing additions to NBA Live 09 is the NBA Academy. While this hasn’t gotten much fanfare after going through some of it at the community event I believed many people would find it to be extremely valuable. One thing that hasn’t been done is producing a full list of drills and showing how they are run so that is what I plan to do over the next few days.

The following drills are available in the NBA Academy: Fast Break Offense, Fast Break Defense, Pick and Roll Control Offense, Pick and Roll Control Defense, Offensive Rebounding, Defensive Rebounding, Low Post Offense, Low Post Defense, Quickstrike Offense, Quickstrike Defense, Offensive Lockdown, Defensive Lockdown, 5 on 5 Full Court Team Practice, 5 on 5 Half Court Team Practice, and 5 on 0 Half Court Team Practice.

An issue that remains from back at the event is that the players defaulted to for the start of each drill are random. Even though I was using the Blazers in the practice gym each time I loaded up a drill it was different players from different teams. In some cases the players involved don’t make much sense for the type of drill being run. This is something I was told would be fixed but apparently wasn’t.

In this first set of videos I’m showing the Fast Break Offense, Fast Break Defense, Pick and Roll Control Offense, and Pick and Roll Control Defense drills.

Sucks I can no longer see the videos from my work Comp. but NBA Academy sounds like it might be kind of coo….kinda like the Basketball camp that College Hoops had on it….

The academy reminds me of the drills from Madden…CAN be very useful. I’m digging Live’s animations. They are MUCH better than the previous year’s. I’ll have to try both Live and 2K9 this year.

I believe they are available in franchise, at least the team practices are. I’ll try to figure out for sure how they tie in.

Hey Pasta I played a couple more games on the demo and it seems it still doesnt really matter when u release on the shoot the animation will still be the same, I even held it sometimes without releasing the shoot button and shoots were still going in. Was there any change from the demo to your copy? Thanks in advance..

Yeah I think so, I mean they’re going to have their sig shot regardless of how long you hold the button. I think however that shot trajectory is affected by that. Its tough for me to say at this point how much the timing affects shot success. I just played my first full game and pretty much got my ass kicked. The CPU shot something like 57% to my 38%.

Game seems gimmicky to me. Instead of all these drills, which might be useful for some, Seems they should have focused on gamelay. Gameplay is better but it’s still a long ways away from from true B-ball IMO.

I promise you once everyone starts getting the bugs are gonna come in masses. Heck the demo has bugs. I’ve had players still playing OOB’s, seen a couple of weird ducks. I want Live to be good but I don’t no if I can take the $60 plunge until I know huge bugs don’t exist. Thanks for the Videos though, it helps some of us make a decision who might otherwise still be undecided.

Pasta, I haven’t played Live in a few years (except the 09 demo) and wanted to know what I can expect from the All-Star weekend stuff. 3pt Shootout and dunk contest? And is there an All-Star game to play during my franchise with the players voted in that I’ve been killing it with??? Just curious how EA does it. thx-

One more thing…if you can put up a full game video, can you do it w/the baseline high camera angle? It’s the best perspective IMO………………………

Pasta, in previous versions of Live it seemed that the game was more fluid in the practice gym than it was in the actual game. For example, in Live 07 the moves were pretty fluid when starting the game and shooting around in the practice gym but as soon as you hit the court for an actual game…..Well you know the rest. Do you get the sense that it’s like that this year meaning is the game more fluid in the practice gym than it is in a game or is it pretty consistent?

This would've been cool if the rebound drills weren't buggy and the low post defense weren't impossible to pass beyond level 1.
