NBA Academy: Part Two

Previously in part one I put up videos of the Fast Break and Pick and Roll Control drills from the NBA Academy in NBA Live 09. The next four to showcase are Offensive Rebounding, Defensive Rebounding, Low Post Offense, and Low Post Defense.

Just from a snap judgment I didn’t find these four to be quite as valuable as the previous four, though that could vary depending on the individual or skill level involved. I did learn some though, especially from the rebounding drills on how to box out and when best to time a jump (I had been jumping for the ball too early) or to avoid jumping completely.

is it just me or is it TOO QUITE in practice I think da addition of playa chatter & sum sneaker squeaks would go a LONG WAY
(in NBA academy mode I don’t think dey need it wen U play an actual game)

but dey should use real sounds ie let a couple of guys play basketball & record da sounds NONE of dat SCRIPTED ISH dey had back n da old Live’s
    wen U play’d 1 on 1

(cuz in all da practices I eva bin 2 it was N e thing but QUIET)

hey Pasta, do the moves you practice in the academy translate well when you play a real game?

I’ve definitely found them leading to me feeling more comfortable in the games. Something as simple as boxing out I got a feel for in the Academy and now I’ve started trying to do that instead of just jump for the ball. The Pick and Roll Control is important to get practice because it is so much about timing.

I understand what ur sayin but isnt this stuff everyone should know how to do since playing bball games for so long? I always box out when a shot goes up and kno how to do the pick and roll. Maybe its good for new comers but if u have played since NBA2k1 and live 99 u should already know how to do this stuff. U know what I`m sayin?

Well at least not this pick and roll system. How long you hold the button determines what the roll man does. It isn’t as simple as it might seem, I’ve got a long ways to go before I feel like I’ve got it down. Sometimes right now I’m using the pick just to open up space.

Fast breaks we’ve never been able to practice before so I think that really comes in handy.

The team practices too are great. I know people will like that within dynasty mode.

Look, for experts of the game maybe they won’t find the Academy to be all that worthwhile. I do think though that this is a big step in getting others acclimated and making the game more approachable. Otherwise what you have is people just running around trying to get an open shot and not even understanding new features and how they can benefit them. Next year they’ll likely add more drills in. One I suggested is Free Throw practice.

The Thunder is being patched in, at least the uniforms are, on release day. It’ll either be a patch or free downloadable content…not sure how they’re distributing it yet. As to the court, have the Thunder even shown off what it’ll look like yet?

The Hornets have their new unis in. I don’t believe the court is the new one though. Not sure of any plans to fix that or the Bobcats court but I’ll check in on that this week.

I caught on to that pick n roll playing the demo, I like how u have control of telling the player what to do. Team practises is what I look forward to on NBA2k9, I think it will be great while in dynasty. I hear fast breaks are hard to come by this year and in ur vids I havent seen many. I get what u say by it will benefit the new features but I would proly not use the NBA Academy. I think this is a great feature for those newcomers and peeps who wanna practise there skillz.

Yeah, in my impressions I’ll talk some about fast breaks. You’re right they’re few and far between. It seems like the defense gets back too quickly…and not just one or two guys but all five.
