NBA 2K9 Demo Available on PSN

Posted October 2nd, 2008 at 2:40 pm

The PS3 has received the demo for NBA 2K9 while the 360 will be left waiting without it. The demo consists of a four minute quarter rematch of the NBA Finals Lakers vs Celtics. I’ll add in a video by tomorrow and will also have the conference call recap tomorrow night.

Be sure to post your thoughts on the demo in the comments!

Update: The demo is now out for the 360 as well.

    Overall lives Demo was better cause of the practice gym and video tutorials
    2K9 is solid but it is a very plain demo.

    As far as the demos, Live has the better demo because of the gym (in my opinion). Overall, I think the reviews for each game will match that. The Gameplay edge will probably go to 2K because of the “feel”. The animations and such just make it feel like a real game. I can’t explain how, it just does. I think most people will agree, though, that Live is coming up. CLEARLY, EA has put a lot of time and effort into the Live franchise, and so we can’t call them “lazy” on this. They are closing the gap.

    It wasn’t perfect with NBA 2K. For instance, when I passed into the post, for some reason the guy kept pivotting out (away from the basket) when a pivot in, or no movement would have made for an easy score. Could be me, though. Also, I saw some block animations that were not normal 2K standard, and I was having a hard time making jumpers. Again, could be me and an adjustment I need to make. I think the player movement has been inproved. It feels more tight, meaning the players don’t seem to skate around as much, and the player collision is definitely spot on. All in all, 2K looks (animation-wise) and feels like NBA ball.

    In contrast, Live is coming along, but the animations are going to be the key in a basketball game. In the live demo, the players still feel too scripted. The shoulders and arm movements do not look natural. The movement looks like a video game. That is what is hurting live. The features are going to be great though. I am almost tempted to buy live just for the academy stuff. I think that is a GREAT idea. The DNA is cool as well (but I am holding judgment on that). In the live demo, the jumper fell too easily, probably.

    I guess my point is that both games seem to be quality games in their own rights. You will need to compromise something for either. For me, it seems to be gameplay vs. features.

    that’s pretty much perfect right there……

    from what I’ve seen, read and heard lately this is what I’ve determined-

    animations= 2k
    presentation= 2k
    audio= EA
    features= EA
    gameplay= 2k
    innovations= EA

    I think that if you want a game that is fun and is well a “videogame” then you go with live. If you want a game that projects NBA B-ball as far as gameplay and presentations then you go with 2k. One thing that 2k does well that EA seems to lack sometimes is the little things like tattoes and items (A.I looks exactly how he does in real life.) If I had to choose I would go with live, because me personally I’m a casual fan of the NBA, college hoops is what I prefer, so the game has to be packed with features to get my attention.

    I am going to rent both. I played both demos and both were good. I think EA’s game has taken bigger steps than 2K. 2K isn’t a huge leap over last year however the visuals are a touch cleaner.

    I read in posts where people hate when the ball goes through the hoop in Live. Something to do with the net physics. One thing I noticed in 2K is that the net physics never changed. Weird.

    One thing that has me amped for 2K is that inclusion of the real PA announcers (Detroit’s Mason). I find this to be a pretty sweet touch….

    Skihawks- thats what ive always noticed about 2k they have always tried to incorporate the little things. Perfect example is College Hoops as opposed to March Madness. Me personally I liked MM, but 2k always incorporated the little things like a weekly show in the Legacy or a coaching carousel. Imagine if EA put that into NCAA Football their dynasty would be crazy.

    Just played the 2k demo and wasn’t that impressed…feel clunky and choppy. Live has its own issues as well. Like others have said, it comes down to what you appreciate in a Bball game. I like the feature set in live much better, but both games will be a rent for me.

    @ Sdot: When U gonna change your picture?!? C’mon man…you lose some credibility when you have some dudes junk as your picture…

    my thoughts 2k has taken a step back with being the best sim by speeding the game up which is fine but in a way it hurts the shot stick in some instances. live has some issues with animations, that r minor. both games imo havent really limited the dunk fest factor, it’s easy equally to dunk on both games if u know how to play. 2k has always captured the audience more on the sim side of the spectrum, while live seems to go after the fun factor. i have played the live demo to death and to me it’s more fun to play. 2k is great gameplay wise and ambience wise, but it lacks a certain hypness while playing which it always has lacked imo. but for the past few years it was the only bball game to play, becuz live was straight ass. 08 was good for otp but it had no depth. live is stepping up to the sim challenge while 2k needs to step up to the excitement challenge. fan boys imo should buy both as i think both games will satisfy any fan of basketball.

    nba live looks so much more polished than 2k. The players on 2k some of them look like aliens. It plays ok but visually it doesnt compare to live. I think live is the choice for me this year!

    di, what the heck r u lookin at? player models on live are way off. live models look like aliens. go look at the screenshots. Kobe’s head weighs like 25 lbs. and has an anorexic frame.

    Ok just played my first game of the 2K9 demo. My impressions:

    + graphics. way improved, but not as great as the artist rendition, but a huge improvement that the 2K base will enjoy a lot. I was impressed.

    + sliding issue appears to be correcting by toning down the game.

    + the crowd, this has been known

    + presentation, looks like they’ve polished their game menu which is good, and that opening song was really good. I didn’t play the game right away to listen to it all the way through

    + pre-game presentation, still wish this would have been used using the game’s model’s so it would be more relevant in franchise mode, but this was a good addition.

    + Blocks are even better this game.

    The negatives:

    - I noticed some jerky motions, but I can live with that with since they toned down on the sliding.

    - Lack of emotion, seems as if it’s toned down, but perhaps its the demo.

    - The crowd. Yeah this is a positive as well, but seriously..towel waving the whole time in the 1st quarter? They need to tone this down.

    - Controls. Even though I’m familiar with them, they still don’t flow naturally. The hardcore base won’t mind since they’ve had a lot of experience with it.

    Overall Impression: This is a better game than 2K8. 2K9 is a very solid basketball game. The game feels more authentic in terms of how the players move on the court than 2K8; however, there were moments where I felt like the players just weren’t motivated or sluggish….I don’t know if this is a team chemistry issue or something….maybe. 2K9 has improved in many different areas, and addressed some of their flaws. It’s still a toss up between this or Live, one isn’t really better than the other, but either way 2K’s and EA’s base should be very happy this year.

    slamfan4life, I have an LG HDTV 47″ full 1080p (2007 model), but its optimized for 720p for both my Xbox 360 Elite/PS3 60GB…both systems optimized for best viewing….they both look just as good. I buy multi-platforms games on 360 though for the achievement points, and because I prefer Xbox Live.
