First NCAA Basketball 09 Gameplay Video

Operation Sports has provided the first opportunity to see gameplay from NCAA Basketball 09 with a video of North Carolina @ Duke. It goes from the loading shoot-around through just over the first four minutes of the first quarter.

Just some quick observations I made from the video:

  • There is little info given pre-game, with the lineups showing nothing but the player # and name (or in this case their position). It isn’t giving any info to use such as you see with Live’s DNA. There should really be some type of info provided there because many people aren’t going to know the skills of the individuals in a college game.
  • You can definitely recognize the NBA Live engine though having a longer video or in getting to play the demo later this week I’m sure much more differentiation between the two games will be realized. Apparently this will especially be seen in the additional animations and the tempo feature.
  • Love the court spacing, it seems even more wide open than Live which should prove beneficial.

You can watch the video here. Make sure to leave your thoughts on it in the comments.

Pasta in all honesty most people who play/purchase Men’s CB games are the ones who know the game or know their team and will just play with them.

I am looking forward to trying out the demo. I think once we all try the demo it will tell us alot about the game.

    Hey Pasta,
Do you know what kind of roster sharing will be featured in this game? Will those of us with Xbox Live Silver memberships be able to get rosters with player names?

EA Locker is in, same setup as NCAA Football I believe (don’t have to be on a friend’s list to grab the roster). Did you need gold for that game? If I remember right you did since it’s in the online area. I’d imagine it will be the same for this game too then.

If I had to choose between this game, and staying with CH 2K8 for another season after watching this video, then I would stay with CH 2K8.

I am going to give this game a fair chance though by reading all of the reviews once they’re out, and playing the demo. This video didn’t wow me though, you know? I do hope this game is good. The last EA College Basketball game that I really liked was March Madness 2004. Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

    My observations of the video:

    1) Uniform jerseys look too small
    2) Uniforms appear faded (Carolina’s blue looked too pale)
    3) Game didn’t appear to move at 60FPS
    4) When Carolina had the ball I would expect the students to jump up and down and yell the entire time — that is college atmosphere
    5) Floor spacing and defensive pressure looked good
    6) Limited animations with the ball passing through the net (3-pointers appeared that the ball didn’t even go through the hoop)
    7) Why can’t developers implement warmups in basketball games….I know that wouldn’t be a huge leap but that is the one part of the uniform that is never in the game
    8) Bands sound muffled…
    9) Pre-game presentation a little soft
    10) I didn’t see any statistical overlays for players or teams

  • Skihawks

Let me fix my #1 listed point above….I meant to state that the numbers still look too small….

It looks better than I expected. As much as I liked CH2K8, that game was not perfect. I am not sure this game is quite as good as 2K8, but it doesn’t appear to be too far off.

Color me unimpressed. Hate the dark color of the game, should be brighter. Why do the fans at Duke cheer for UNC? And the game just doesn’t look polished…at all. I’m holding out for a demo.

I really don’t know how to feel about this game. Feels like Live 9.1, but I’m really hoping for an amazing dynasty mode, otherwise I don’t see this game getting much playing time from my console.

Why is it so hard for EA to get the net animations right? Why can’t they get the passing right? I mean damn it’s 2009 & they still can’t even get that right? WTF? These type of things ruin the game for me. EA please, before you keep adding all these features, fix the basics of the game & make it a solid as possible. Once you have a solid foundation then build off of that & add features. Why is this such a hard concept for EA to understand? I’m pissed because I love college basketball games & EA is forcing me to stick with College Hoops 2K8.

    It always looks amazing

The focus should be on gameplay and animations…..right now I’d say it’s slightly better than MM08 in both area’s based on the video. But it’s just a video so i may be way off base.

It looks okay, but the gameplay is hard to determine based on the vidoe. One thing I hate about Live that has kept me from even putting that ish in my PS3 is that horrible gather before a defensive jump. Has that been confirmed to be fixed for this game? If the gather is there, this game will be horrible!!!!

Supposedly that has been fixed for NCAA, and I suspect the NBA Live patch will make the same change.

the ball physics are still bad….the ball appears to act like a rock as it hits the rim and falls in…..not very natural looking….This game looks no better than any NBA Live game or EA basketball game…..EA really hasn’t put much effort into fixing the stuff that matters…..namely; gameplay…..

I haven’t heard one way or the other but that would make sense. They re-did all the player models for 09, which meant re-doing all the uniforms also. They’ll probably keep the models, maybe tinker with them some, but now they’ll be able to add in even more alternates uniforms.

hmph its okay, i like the way you can practice in a university court and not be wearing the jersey, but why does the duke fans cheer when i think tyler hansborough is dunking during practice? and why are the pants so rediculously large? and also 3 pointters seem way too easy to make, greg paulus i think made like 3 in a row.

The crowd reaction was really generic. No custom chants. At Duke they jump up and down when the opposing team has the ball. There was none of that. Seemed very easy to make shots, but I”m sure you can mess w/ sliders to change that to a good level. I like how they have all the preseason tourney’s in the game that is pretty cool. I hope they have the presentation for the ncaa tourney that 2k8 had. But I doubt it. EA is still lacking, but there are no competitors to push them. All that being said, I”ll still buy the game.
