NCAA Basketball 09 Demo Now Available

by
Posted November 6th, 2008 at 7:12 am

The demo for NCAA Basketball 09 is out now for the Xbox 360 and will be this afternoon (usually around 3pm PT) on the PS3. Coming in at 875.89 MB it features two four different teams that can be used in any combination. Kentucky, Tennessee, 1979 Michigan State, and 1982 North Carolina.

In a pleasant surprise the demo lets you choose from six different camera angles, four different difficulty levels, and is a full 8 minutes half. If there has been one really frustrating thing about sports game demos it is how many have had multiple short quarters which doesn’t provide an opportunity to get into any sort of flow. Thankfully that isn’t the case here and should allow for the tempo feature to actually come into play.

Leave your thoughts on the demo in the comments. I’ll have some impressions and videos up tonight.

This game rocks it plays fluidly and the only thing they took out from last year was the overpowering of lock down defense.

I like the way the players move and shoot.

Josh, Live did get a lot of good reviews. It’s a personal preference I guess, especially if you back a particular brand. For those who prefer Live, they’ll have gripes about 2K, for those who like 2K, they’ll have gripes about Live or EA. It’s just the nature of the business, but your opinion is not the end all be all. Fact is both games got reviewed favorably and both offer great things towards their base. I’ve been buying NBA Live since 1995, and starting buying both Live and 2K since 2002. When I play one over the other, I miss some of the intangibles of the other game. I guess that’s why I never finish a season. I’ll play a game on Live, and then play a game on 2K and vice versa.
JR I didn’t say anything about 2K in this post. I understand that it’s not EA’s fault that 2K dropped College Hoops. I really don’t care about reviews I judge with my own eyes. The reason Live got decent reviews is because of it’s features not gameplay. I mean come on JR, 2009 & net animations still aren’t right? I want EA to be good because quite honestly I like EA more than 2K but they have just let me down ever since Next Gen. Since you brought up 2K, EA could take a page out of their book because 2K’s attention to detail is unmatched when it comes to Sports games. At the rate EA’s going I don’t see anything changing in the near future.
I havent played the demo so I dont know if it good or not but some of you people need to play other 2k sports game outside of there basketball games. 2K’s attention to detail is unmatched when it comes to Sports games are you kinding me. I wish they could put as much work as they put in there basketball games in there baseball game and hockey game, and plz dont attempt to make another boxing game definatly leave that to EA.

Josh, I agree there are things that both franchises need to work on, but neither game makes me want to align with one or the other, where as with 2K7 and 2K8 saw more playing time on my console.

NBA Live has the features, online, graphics and broadcast team, but 2K has better overall game play, animations and presentation. 2K does have more intangibles than Live, but wish they would lean more towards new innovation since their game play has been seen as positive by the community. This would have been a great year for 2K to bring in a superstar mode.

I know you didn’t bring up 2K, not bashing it, just using it to elaborate my thoughts. Live did get good reviews on game play even though there were some gripes. You said you viewed it with your own eyes, and that’s why I say its a matter of personal preference, but not one person’s opinion is end all be all. For example, I didn’t like Gears of War, played it, didn’t like it, didn’t feel like there was much to it, but it got great reviews, but my opinion isn’t end all be all so I’m not going to force my opinion on other people.

I just go off what I see, facts, analysis. People like sdot up there, smh, poor kid. He’s just slow. I just owned him on 10 point guards that I would take before Baron Davis. He thinks if you shoot a low FG% it makes you a better shooter. I’m still laughing at that one, I had to tell my co-workers that one, I just gave them links to this site, so Pasta you have 4 more new visitors coming to this site.

I hear you..Yea I agree that both Live & 2K have things that the other doesn’t but I guess I’m just frustrated with EA because I used to love their basketball games back in the day. I just wish they would live up to their potential. It’s not like they don’t have the resources to. It just seems like they’re improving at a snails pace on purpose to string us along. You make some valid points though.

The demo was soft at best. I felt like I had no control over my players. On defense, the player I controlled kept getting sucked into the guy with the ball with the lock-on animation. On offense, the play was sloppy and had no idea who I was passing the ball to.

I will say the visuals and animations look great. However, I will rent so I can test sliders and adjust the speed of the gameplay. The default speed was too slow.

The best way to describe controlling the players was like trying to run a 100-yard dash in two feet of mud. You know where you want to go but you just can’t quite get your feet off the ground.

All jokes aside, when you type like that it doesn’t add anything, in fact it detracts from the subject. I honestly couldn’t care less how you talk, I just know you won’t get much respect from people if you talk like that and you are over the age of 15.

    Just an observation/suggestion.

I won’t mind if the game plays like Live, but it HAS to capture the college atmosphere and have deep deep dynasty mode. Not some Mickey Mouse recruiting system. I think there is a DNA update out now for Live, going to investigate.

FYI – NBA LIVE 2009 NEWS: EA has released a major patch that addresses game play issues to Sony and MS, they are awaiting MS/Sony to approve it and will go into details of which major game play issues/glitches they are addressing.

Just played the demo … I actually enjoyed it … Playing as Kentucky against Tennessee was actually pretty cool to see how important playing in your tempo is for this game … I playen on all-star and for the first like 3-4 minutes of the game I was getting blown out trying to play an uptempo game (playing right into the hands of Tennessee) … It wasnt until I slowed it down and ran plays in the half court that I started to win … Something that is pretty sweet I think … There are a few things that they have improved from the Live engine most noticeable the spacing and fluid interceptions (i.e. not stopping after they catch the ball) … One huge problem that I saw was shot percent both user and computer it was way to easy to score, especially hit threes (that can all be adjusted by sliders) … Truly I can not wait for this game to come out … The whole online stuff sucks without names but im a college fan that likes to play offline with my Michigan Wolverines (Go Blue!!!) and restore them back to greatness like I did in NCAA Football as well … So yeah its definitely at least a rent game if not a purchase for everyone … I will be purchasing it the day it comes out … Oh and for the 2k fan boys the current game is not as fluid as college hoops was last year (I did by college hoops last year and loved the game) but there is something pretty fun and interesting about this game that is really intriguing … Also I got way to good at college hoops … Well thats my 98 cents …
