Looking At Some Early NBA Live DNA Changes

While there continue to be some hiccups involved with the 365 feature in NBA Live 09 much of it now appears to be working. The data from the games so far this year is feeding in providing the Rewind games (though they are several days behind) and DNA changes. The more games that are played the more accurate the DNA should be. Still I thought it would be interesting to look at a handful of players and see how their DNA compares to what originally shipped on the game.

There is nothing out there that even compares to what is being done with 365 and what it will mean to the game throughout the year. It’ll be interesting to follow all the changes and see how the players and teams evolve and I’ll be doing regular articles about it. Not just for those playing the game but also for NBA fans who would find this info intriguing. I’m especially looking forward to seeing how the Nuggets and Pistons evolve following the Billups-Iverson trade. Continue on for a look at 14 players and how their DNA as of 11/7 compares to the default.

The number one pick in the draft Derek Rose shows that early on he is performing somewhat as expected. Not everyone will see huge changes in DNA and Rose thus far is an example of that.

On the other end of the spectrum is Michael Beasley who displays how the DNA can shift quite drastically. While only a few games to go on you can see some big differences with the Heat. He is spotting up more and isn’t running off-ball screens.

Like Beasley, OJ Mayo is showing major changes compared to the shipped DNA. He has been predominantly a pick and roll ball handler.

Kevin Love has been spotting up more and posting up less early on with the Timberwolves. He also hasn’t been involved in many pick and rolls.

Rudy Fernandez is spotting up more for the Blazers and seeing less time in isolation.

Elton Brand went from the Clippers to the 76ers but the early results show he is playing practically the same way as he did before.

Similar to Brand you can see that Baron Davis hasn’t changed much since leaving the Warriors for the Clippers.

Mo Williams joined the Cavs and playing with Lebron James isn’t leading to much of a drastic difference in his style so far. He’s spotting up a little more which could be a product of how much Lebron handles the ball.

On the Hornets you can see that James Posey is almost exclusively a spot-up jump shooter.

Chris Bosh has benefited from the acquisition of Jermaine O’Neal. His DNA so far shows he is posting up more taking away from how much he is spotting up or involved in pick and rolls.

Bringing in Michael Beasley has resulted (at least partially) in Shawn Marion becoming more of a spot-up shooter for the Heat.

This season Kobe Bryant has been in isolation situations more often than before. I’m not sure why that may be the case and I’d expect that to be reduced as the season goes on.

Having Tyson Chandler in only two of the four games hasn’t affected Chris Paul’s DNA much. He remains primarily a pick and roll ball handler regardless.

Despite having Mo Williams at PG there isn’t any significant shifts in Lebron James’ DNA. Slightly less pick and roll and spotting up with slightly more isolation and posting up. The balance appears to be about the same.

The lopsided coverage given at this site disappoints me. It doesn’t surprise me but it discourages me. In all honesty pasta, I completley understand the business advantages you gain when you align your website’s talking points with EA’s talking points,(free games, advertising support etc,etc…) But is all of that really worth your honest opinion or the integrity of what your site displays. Sh*t, I dunno, maybe you’ve fully transitioned into actually believing those talking points. That’s not to say that your never hard on EA because you do have your moments, but even in those moments your aligence to EA is evident. If you really think anything I do is based on getting a few games for free nothing I say would make you feel differently. I laugh at the thought of that. Here we have a revolutionary feature for a game that is intriguing to cover and will be all season long. I’d actually look at this info even if it wasn’t Live 09 related and I see some comments that actually pointed out the same thing. Ironically the only website where you could’ve read about frustration with the initial problems and delays for 365…was right here.

When you talk about lopsided coverage I absolutely agree. EA releases what, like 15 different sports games a year. 2K has a couple. And then get down to how much info EA releases compared to 2K. Naturally that is going to be the case reflected in how much I have to talk about. So I wouldn’t anticipate any changes in that regard.

Seriously though, find me another website that has multiple articles on MLB Front Office Manager (and I have yet another set for tomorrow morning which will make for 5). That doesn’t even come out until January 27th but it is a game that has potential and is intresting to discuss. I talk about the games when I have reason to talk about them. This isn’t dependent on the company but the resources and info made available.

Pretty much, but I don’t come out and say one is necessarily better than the other. When it comes to what I’d prefer to play I place importance of different things than maybe others would. With the basketball games, online play is a big part of that and no question Live nailed that area in comparison to 2K. Now if 2K had something like an online franchise mode I’d probably be on that side instead.

This is the reason I don’t do reviews though, I’ve never felt that my opinion of a game should hold precedence over anyone elses. When it comes to potential bias that can always be argued with reviews and I never wanted to put myself in that position.

Pretty much, but I don’t come out and say one is necessarily better than the other. When it comes to what I’d prefer to play I place importance of different things than maybe others would. sdot, i assume u can play 2k with the best… how the hell do u play D vs the cpu. i just made the jump to superstar and i cant hold the damn thunder under 65% FG%. i play better D vs humans than the CPU and it drives me crazy. u gut any tips for me. (know that i use the grizz so its not like they r a good team or anything, but i cannot deal with the cpu shooting well over 50% and gettin easy baskets seemingly at will) i was very solid at D last year and as i said i play good D vs humans. any tips would b appreciated.

No one denies your honesty pasta, and true to your word, you do post whatever RELEVANT sports video game news thats available, it stands to reason that EA would by default have ‘more’ coverage.
Where I, and most of the guys that believe you’re a payola guy, see your personal impressions of a EA game, always ringing like an endorsement, like your past impressions of March Madness vs College Hoops. It took you two years to agree with the overall sentiment that CH was the better series. You still think LIVE is better than NBA 2K…These are issues that make one assume, you always pro-rate an EA title, just because they have community events and share early game code…The Final product always seems ‘off’, authentic, but not the best gameplay. Just like the boxing they just released, You swore to the heavens that , that game was gonna be awesome..I think it cost less than Nintendogs to buy that game now…
Finally, sometimes you sound a little bothered by 2K, like you never say much about Sony’s Sports titles, but when 2K tries to have something like PrizeFighter, you go out of your way to knock the game’s controls, when you never talk about control on any other game. Gamers I play with, play FN3 with buttons, not analog. And the transition to PF was smooth. You hated it….

But your overall positive approach to EVERYTHING EA does is becoming a little hard to take, considering no one, no company delivers 100% of the time. I rarely read a gripe about EA gameplay/online lag/over promoting, etc.

PS: the scrub Knicks won again…will 2k and LIVE update our league leading scoring capabilities? Can Crawford get some Phoenix Sun Player Ratings?

Pasta, if you like Live better than 2k that’s fine but you lose me when you say you like Live better because it has better online features? Really? Does gameplay even matter to you? I mean isn’t gameplay the most important aspect of a Sports Video Game? It seems like you like games only for online features. If you do that’s fine but just let it be known so we could end the speculation. I normally visit your site to get your objective feedback but I’m starting to wonder if your still objective.

2K has a real good feel to their game play, it’s better than Live’s, but Live has good game play as well, not up to 2K’s level yet, but it’s still good game play. The combination of Live’s gameplay, DNA, 365 and online play might make it a bit more appealing to someone who is on the fence. What it comes down to is your personal preference. After being let down in the next gen by both franchises it’s good to see 2 solid basketball games. I have both, I can’t pick one over the other, where one is weak, the other is strong. The bar has been set pretty high for next year. I believe Live will be looking to renovate it’s Dynasty mode as they are asking for community input specifically for this area.

2K has a real good feel to their game play, it’s better than Live’s, but Live has good game play as well, not up to 2K’s level yet, but it’s still good game play. Well online is certainly a big part of it for me. When you start talking about gameplay that is always going to be subjective. You think Live’s is terrible, I find it semi-enjoyable (and a mode like online team play covers up some of the flaws). What you probably don’t give enough credit to is familiarity. I’ve played Live as long as I can remember and it is difficult to switch completely when you have that level of comfort. I’ve recognized 2K basketball as better from a technical standpoint when talking about general gameplay, but that doesn’t necessarily translate to how much it would be enjoyed since that varies from individual to individual. It would be the same for someone who has been playing 2K for years…even if Live was generally regarded as better (like 2K is now) those people would struggle to switch just cause of that. I understand why people can find enjoyment out of either.
