#5 of 2008: NBA Live 09

The NBA is one place where EA Sports now plays the role of the underdog. That isn’t a familiar scenario for them. How did they react with NBA Live 09? Improved gameplay and a big investment in the future. While the game still had issues it provided an enjoyable experience with fully functioning modes and a variety of features.

NBA Live 09 had the most innovative addition of any game this year with Live 365. While its value to the game remains questionable it does offer a great deal. Not only in providing a daily roster update, but changing the way the game plays and offering the opportunity to view some fascinating data that NBA fans normally would never have access to. This multi-year exclusive deal with Synergy showed that EA is serious about the franchise and would be attempting to achieve what they have done recently with FIFA and NHL. That is changing the perception around a franchise that lagging behind a competitor. While 365 hasn’t shown enough to justify it as a paid add-on next year it has proven it does have some value.

While gameplay is always going to be subjective, Live’s showed some big improvements this year. Additions such as the Pick and Roll Control and new play calling system were of big benefit. Despite that there were several areas that the game struggled with. Some of those include rebounding, lack of aggressiveness for loose balls, broken fast breaks, and terrible directional passing. The Lockdown Defense and Quickstrike Ball Handling were disappointments too. The animations keep the game from being as fluid as 2K9 and that flow is probably the most striking difference between the two titles. Presentation is still in need of an upgrade however the commentary is by far the best of the NBA offerings.

While Live 09 didn’t have a real Be a Pro mode, it did come through with the NBA Academy and excellent online performance and options. Online Team Play continued to run smoothly and bringing in the Clubs provided more reason to play it. Hopefully next year they go the MMO route seen in NHL 09. I also have to stress the importance of what the NBA Academy provided. Being able to practice specific situations not only provided opportunity for improving skills but it also added a new element to franchise mode with the team practices. More drills should definitely be added on next year.

Live and 2K9 easily could be flipped in order since they offer unique strengths while carrying their own weaknesses. Neither one offers the full package. The online performance and options, attempts at innovation, familiarity and accessibility, as well as general direction the franchise is headed pushed my preference towards Live. This was a great year for basketball gaming with three quality titles that excelled in their own distinct ways.

Gameplay should ultimately be the most important thing and 2K9 trumps Live in every aspect, and for this reason it should at the very least be placed ahead of Live. However I know this is ultimately just your opinion and I respect that but if I were you I'd re-think placing Live ahead of 2K9.

I actually agree with Pasta here. Live 09 had lots of value with the variety it had, working online play, and 365 which is amazing. I do play 2K but its just the same old game and actually less sim than it was last year.

Otherwise just issue the top 10 games not in any order. By putting the games in order 1 through 10, you are pretty much saying which one you believe to be the better game.

After many a year acknowledging 2k as my game of choice LIVE made a resurgence this year. I find myself wanting to play LIVE more than any other game in my collection. Even with all of its issues LIVE IMO was/is a vastly improved game and a viable option for those of us who have grown weary of the same stale 2k formula that has continually provided sub par graphics and LAST GEN physics and gameplay. Its time for 2k to step into the next generation…errrr…Current generation…I need something new from 2k

People may agree to disagree, but I'm helping to elaborate on what Pasta has written because most on here went hell blazing on here for no reason. Call me Pasta Jr. if you want but I've been on the opposite of ideas with him in the past with some of his posts, but we never resorted to the childish antics and immaturity of some on here. I'm assuming everyone is in high school or something, maybe me being 26 is over the hill for this thread.

I'm not a real fan because? Lakers fan since being in my mother's womb and I played throughout high school and during my tenure in the armed forces. But that's the past, everyone on here will claim they were good and was the starting PG for their high school team. Spent $1500 to go watch the Cavs play the Lakers next month and I'm flying out there just for one day to go see the Lakers play. That's dedication to my team and the game. My favorite sport is basketball, I'm a fanatic.

If ive managed to play over 100 games online(with about 5 or 6 games with lag) then how could it be broken? the majority of my online experience is a very positive one.

If ive managed to play over 100 games online(with about 5 or 6 games with lag) then how could it be broken? the majority of my online experience is a very positive one.

its about time someone speaks out against the holy 2k that can do no wrong. the game is a mess with a train wreck of online play. 2k is a take your money and forget about you company. mlb 2k, top spin, prizefighter, and now nba 2k9. i dont get why people want to defend them when they dont give a crap about the customer.

Live's rosters get updated as soon as the player plays for that particular team. They also include players that weren't originally on the roster, case in point: Morrow. At the same time, when the player plays for the team, EA compiles their new player DNA. There's more to it than just adding a player to a team.

I'm simply stating fact. I've stated my reasons why I lean more towards NBA Live, and I'm pretty sure I listed more than an update. DNA has been a worth while experience, and well received within the community. I really don't believe you understand the concept of DNA. Roster updates are important and actually having players in the game that play and not omitted are important. Roster updates along with a reflection how they play on their current team is important too.

I think the point patrick is trying to make is a valid one. What good is live dna if the gameplay is less then great. Its nice to see those stats, and tendencies from an intellectual perspective but we're talking about an f-ing video game, not a book report on the NBA.

He does make a point, but whether or not Live has great gameplay is subjective. To some they will say its a solid engine, to others they will say it's a bad engine. A lot of people are tough critics on this version of Live without even trying the game. I own both games and while 2K9 has the better engine, Live does provide a solid one with the combination of DNA. Do I want more animations? Of course, and I'm looking forward to what Live puts out in the future, but to discredit a game without every playing it, is just ignorant IMO.

I've always said 2K has the more fluid game play and animations and feel. I'm looking at the game overrall, to include innovative features and online play. The notion of it "not being 2K it must be garbage" is just silly.

Does it have the potential to one day overtake 2k, most defenitley?

But to act like that day has already come in 2008 is proposterious.

EA is the undisputed king of making people believe that next year is the year that (fill in the blank) madden, nba live, fifa, will finally reach its potential and be the greatest game ever.

So, sorry if i have no faith in thier promises. Its a business you know. Just like cars back in the day used to be made sturdy as hell and now they're made with plastic parts.

It makes more financial sense for them to string the consumer along for 10 years and keep taking their money, then to deliver an aww aspiring game and potentially lose sales the following year.

EA has turned into your run of the mill corporation out to make a buck with a hint of game development prowess, where as I still feel that take two is still very much focused on producing the best quality basketball title it can.

There are 2 very different agenda's at work, and the sales numbers proves which agenda is more effective.
