How Important Is The Custom Chants Feature?

It has become apparent that the mainstream has identified the custom chant creator as the most compelling addition to MLB 09: The Show. Most of the articles relating to the latest info on 09 center around it and focus on that feature in particular.

For as much advancement as it looks like The Show will offer, the ability to record custom chants and yells appears as though it is one of the few features that is completely new to the series. In that regard it shouldn’t be a surprise that it has become the most high profile selling point. While fans of the franchise don’t need to be swayed with a flashy feature the companies look for these to assist in their game’s promotion.

While it sounds like it could add some fun I’m not sure that initial amusement won’t wear off quickly. If it was allowed online, even just in unranked games, I think I’d be more interested in it. But as it is I’ll probably try it out and it’ll be dependent on how natural it sounds and how simple it is to use. I didn’t even attempt to utilize NCAA Football 09′s custom stadium sounds feature because the process was so convoluted.

The Show is one of the few games that has a fact sheet dominated by improvements to the game and not just what is new. While I would’ve hoped for something more significant than the chant creator being the biggest addition to the game, that can easily be overlooked by how impressive most other aspects of 09 will likely turn out to be.

So how important is the addition of custom chants, yells, and walk-up music to you? Leave your thoughts in the comments.

Well baseball is one of the few sports where heckling "CAN" be heard. If you're in the stands and yell out to a pitcher that you've seen snakes with better arms…they"ll hear it! Hockey, NFL, NBA? Good luck being noticed—-> 3 things I want ths year from MLB:The Show…….
    1) improve online play
    2) add HR Derby
    3) improve baserunning

Speaking of heckling pitchers….When I was in college, a teammate of mine enjoyed yelling to the other team's pitcher, "Your mother works a better rubber."

Doesn't matter to me at all. I just wish I'd see more balls hit over the outfielder's head without having to go in and manually change the attributes of every fielder.

Any addition is a positive one, but this isn't something I'll utilize, I'm very satisfied with the sounds. I fired up my PS3 to play the Show for the first time and I can't see how I didn't play this game any more. Now I remember, GTA IV came out.

As long as this doesn't take away from other important features like some games do (cough..Madden..cough) then it will definately be a plus. It's good to see Sony taking full advantage of the power of the PS3. Hopefully other companies will follow their blueprint.

I am excited about this feature and think it will only add to the realism of the game. Custom walk-up music is more of a selling point for me than the chant, but Im sure it was not hard to implement once they got walk up music

This is a feature I couldn't care less about. I have never really cared for features like custom chants/signs/music/etc. b/c most of them are too complicated to use, don't work properly, or just never sound right. The only time I've used a feature remotely close to this was in nfl2k5 for custom music, and the show 08 for batter walkup.

This sounds like an EA gimmick and we all know SCEA is better than that! I can't wait for this game!

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/Skihawks Skihawks

I just think that SCEA will get this right. I think people will get real creative with the custom chant creator. I would also think that you could record music as a chant by placing the mic up to a computer speaker while playing your favorite tunes….

I agree, the more features the better….I will state this often, I sure hope the game has clouds, overcast days / nights, etc.

Until I get to utilize it, I can't really make a judgment. I would rather have weather conditions (cold temps, hot temps play a role in gameplay) that this feature. However, if this feature is as good as advertised (the ability to change a single voice into a crowd chant) I believe people will use it more than they think….

There is already a great community working in full force, compiling real and other game (like High Heat) crowd audio over at operationsports.com.

This is going to be so fun, and just adds tremendous depth to the game.

It isnt my most excited feature (Time of Day Progression, 40 man rosters, September Call-ups, more animations and Branch point-fielding) has me more stoked. But this is surely welcome. More options the better.

very excited about it. I think of this feature in combination with the ability to program in-game music to batter wak-ups AND specific points in the game (homeruns, end of game etc). With this combination, you can create an authentic experience of being at a particular ballpark. To me it just adds another depth of realism.

I won't be using the custom chants…the walk-up music is cool, but I wish it was already programmed into the game… I'm guessing I won't be taking the time to add my own music…

I am pumped about The Show. However, for 360 owners (I own both) it looks like it may be another tanker in regards to 2K9. I am concerned that there has been little released about this game. No bullet-points, screens, etc. Feels a lot like the hype, or lack thereof, that surrounded 2K8.

My biggest feature would be to be able to change my number in Road to the Show mode. I hate picking my number 14 and ending up being number 35 before I'm even in the majors.

I think they should use that feature so that you can vocally name your created player in Road to the show and so the created player can interact with his teammates, for example calling for a ball during a pop fly.
