79 Rated QB in AFC Championship

flacco1

As the Ravens closed out their victory over the Titans on Saturday it struck me what Joe Flacco had just accomplished. He’s the first rookie QB to win two playoff games. Not only that, but he did so while carrying a rating of 79 in Madden 09.

Every week when the roster update details are posted his is a name most frequently cited in the comments as having been overlooked. While Matt Ryan has risen to an 89, Flacco has continued to hold a sub-80 rating and it is hard to understand why.

Obviously Flacco isn’t winning the games for his team, but he has done what he has needed to do. He has a great deal of poise and leadership just as Ryan does, and he throws one of the best deep balls in the league.

For some perspective on how unjustifiable his 79 is take note of some QBs that are currently rated higher than him. Those names include Jon Kitna, Vince Young, Todd Collins, Billy Volek, and Chris Redman.

It will be difficult for EA to avoid moving Flacco up to around an 85 in the next update. This is a good example of the problem we’ve seen through the weekly Madden roster updates this year and I’m planning an article on that subject in the near future.

Look Joe Flacco should deserve an 85 because he did not turn over the ball in the two playoff games but he made big plays and keeps the play alive and has a strong arm and could rush the ball a lil bit just like big ben but u have to look at it flacco doesnt have weapons on the reciever core but mason and heap even though the ravens should be using heap more and big ben has weapons such as miller, ward, holmes, parker and even washignton so he has weapons big ben is a great QB but u gotta give flacco some credit yea he has a running game and a tough defense but so does big ben, flacco is similarity of big ben i think when flacco devolops he be like big ben so what if flacco leads them to the super bowl with that defense are you guys gonna still say flacco is nothing he made history winning 2 games as rookie no one thought that flacco would do that before the season started…but i think that flacco deserves an 85 rating and if had weapons on the recieving core he would be better cuz in the NFL QB is the most important position and QB need weapons to help them QB needs WRs and WRs needs a QB so stop ripping flacco

Miller,Ward,Holmes,Parker, and Washington are so much better? The Ravens aren't far off on offense. Mason, Clayton, Figurs, Heap, McGahee, and that FB ( I forget his name…McClain?). You want to mention Washington? I'm guessing you missed those deep balls he dropped against the Chargers…Our offense is terrible…but we really stepped up this past game against San Diego…not to mention their mistakes sure helped too.

A comparison to Ben Roethlisberger? There's NO advantage whatsoever for Pittsburgh. Roethlisberger has a HORRIBLE line. Try putting Flacco behind that. I bet you he hits a landslide. Baltimore's o-line is far better than our o-line. If anything, the o-line of Baltimore is a weapon compared to our's. Flacco has nothing on Big Ben…other than fewer injuries.

figurs be 4 real well lets trade holmes for figurs then say that

        • SteelCurtain

Did you read what I said Slugz? I said your offense ISN'T that far off judging by the receivers. Your line itself plus your other talent on the field, even makes me believe your offense is better than our's. You're up alittle on the offensive side, we're up alittle on the defensive.

but like i said they got a tough running game mcgahee and mclain a tough running game…but on the recieving core they only have mason and heap and yea figurs is a deep threat with his speed but look at pittsburgh they got ward one of the best recievers in the game miller one of the best TEs in the game parker is an elite back but has injury probelms and holmes is way better than figurs they both have speed but holmes is better at recieving core and ok washington miss deep balls but hes a decent reciever but if big ben had an o-line they had a wat better offense so wats holding pittsburgh on points is the o-line for not protecting but the pittsburgh offense is great they just need the o-line and the ravens offense mcgahee has knee problems but is still good and mclain is great but on the recieving core they dont have alot of weapons then wat pittsburgh got ravens only have mason and heap and clayton had a good year but still hes a decent reciever so pittsburgh got the better offense but i got the ravens to win

his rating is right on. The Ravens are already a 90 overall. Flacco has been the beneficiary of a strong running game and an outstanding defense. His QB rating on the season is an 80 including a 22 anda 64 in the last four games.

So what if he wins the Super Bowl? Does that automatically make him a 95 OVR? Trent Dilfer and Brad Johnson, among others, won Super Bowls as run of the mill QBs. They didn't even get many opportunities to start after that. So yes, a QB who wins a Super Bowl has accomplished something. However, it doesn't make him a star.

    • slugz

flacco is way better than dilfer so whats ya point no he should have solid rating thats all like i'll take trent edwards rating he throw a nice ball onmadden when i played with him dont know if he went down or not

As a die hard Browns fan even I have to admit it is unfair. If DAnderson is an 85, that makes Flacco atleast a 100.

After watching the games, Flacco rarely if ever throws errant passes.

He get's incompletions because he plays like he is on madden throwing it deep every 3 tries, which opens up that run game by spreading the field. He will get 1 or 2 deep balls with shit recievers a game.

I don't know which stat to bump up though… I guess his awareness and accuracy can both be bumped up, he has the cannon arm, rightfully so.

Watch him play, don't just look at completion/incompletion or yardage. You can't get yardage when a receiver can't catch.

    He deserves an 83-85

Matt Schaub deserves that accurate QB weapon

Andre Johnson needs the catch in traffic to be highest, so that stupid speed icon will go away.

Mario Williams needs a higher strength.

    Fuck the Cowboys.

    Dear Pasta

I totally agree with you I ran a draft and by Round 11 and 12 all 90s were gone.
On Flacco i agree Its quite feat to be the first rookie to win 2 and now he has a chance for a Ring
I think AWR on Rookies has always been to low thus making there OVR low
Ryan should be 86 OVR and Flacco should be 86 OVR
Jon Kitna, Todd Collins, Billy Volek, and Chris Redman should be 79 ,77, 76, 74
Vince Young is a mystery to me He got SPD but needs to be more then a Wildcat QB

  • Mr, EA Sports

The onlu weapon Matt Schaub should get is a baton across his head for stealing all that money for years. Andre Johnson has enough ratings just be happy. Mario Williams ain't that trong I heard a report that he lost an arm wrestling match to a DB so we might see a decrease in the near future. As for the Cowboys they have the greatest talent ever assembled it was just injuries that spelled their doom. Expect to see Dallas as an 98 next year if they keep the same team.

    • barnmaker

to bad they don't have a team chemistry rating, cuz then big D would be more like big bums. there needs to be a new attribute rating just for tony romo and brett favre. and they need to call it "choke" or "grow a pair" cuz those boys suck when they are losing in big games

      • Julian

Agreed. And whats up with the cowgirls Oline? They gave up more sacks to tony Romo in 2 games than the Falcons did all season (who were supposed to have a suspect Oline)

the ravens has the most people on IR . Thats why ur on the ravens nuts cause your a cowgurl fan got all that talent and cant win a playoff game mad cause flacco got further than tony homo

  • Mr. EA Sports

I see that you have common sense. Flacco has a strong arm but that team doesn't require him to pass the ball. He threw 11 passes the last game how can you give a ratings increase on that? When he shreds a defense for 300 yrds he might see an increase but we al know that ain't gonna happen.

    • Steve

He should have had an 85 ovr going into the playoffs but EA ignored him. You can't really bring him up or down from that rating from his playoff performance because he has not really been good or bad and has not been asked to do too much by his team other than manage the game… Which he has done.

    • Ron Dayne

You should watch the tape again. He threw 22 passes and completed 11 of them. Yea 50 percent isn't that great, but he made the big throws when the team needed him the most. I don't know what you have against Flacco, but he is just a Rookie, playing like a seasoned vet.

Plenty of justice but the peace is up to you GT-kc-10785. Flacco is not a weapon at QB. He barely passes the ball the Ravens run 70 %. I watch the tape of all teams so I know. Matt Ryan actually makes reads when the defense is in a pass defense. Let me see Flacco drive down the field in a 2 minute drill then get back at me.

    • slugz

he did in the first steelers game to force OT

    • Julian

Agreed. The key difference between Flacco and Ryan is that Ryan can put the team on his shoulders if he has to and march down the field. Flacco cannot on a regular basis. Ask a Bears fan who they fear more, and if they have been able to shake the nightmares from week 6 yet.

Flacco ain't a QB he's a kicker who throws an option pass. How can you justify a QB who throws 11 passes? Look at the film buddy do you see him picking apart a defense like Manning, Brady or Romo? When he gets to that level he will get his upgrade but 1st things 1st he has to throw that ball more than 15 x's a game.

Flacco should be raised to atleast 85 and Ryan should not be 89 along with Favre. Rivers also needs a boost his rating is way to close to Ryan which sucks compared to Rivers. Im a chargers fan and agree that Billy Volek is rated a little too high his glory days have been over for a while now.

    • Julian

Didn't Matty Ice slap the Chargers around in the regular season.

    3) D. Brees
    4) Big Ben
    5) P.Rivers

So you change 2 spost and think your list is better huh? Brees doesn't win any game except that one year when Bush was a rookie. McNabb is a top 20 QB I can't put him in the top 10 because he doesn't put up the great numbers or take over a game with just his passingwhen it matters . Plus McNabb has a hard time staying healthy. I can see Aaron Rogers as a 11 and Eli as 12 though

how do u expect a guy in the nfc title game to not be a top ten qb? ill even put him top 5

      1.brady
      2.manning
      3.brees
      4.rivers
      5.mcnabb
      6.warner
      7.ben
      8.pennington
      9.romo
      10.cutler

  • Mr. EA Sports

I can see Aaron Rogers as a 11 and Eli as 12 though

ok seriously if you're gonna talk about bad ratings then why not bring up chad johnson (95)? He had an abissmal year and is ranked HIGHER then Greg Jennings and Roddy White to name a few. I know Palmer was out, but he should be a 92 at best along with Tory Holt.

I've mentioned Chad Johnson as someone who's still overrated a couple times. There is a balance to finding how much outside factors should be counted into their ratings (having Palmer hurt).

      • matt

ok but even if palmer were there he still wouldnt have produced like some guys below him… i think giving him a 92 is generous to be honest, but a 95 is ridiculous.

    JaMarcus Russell – 2,423 13tds 8ints 77.1 ratings – 75 overall in Madden

    Brady Quinn – 518 yards 2tds 2ints 66.6 ratings – 83 overall in Madden

    EA is racist

    • SteelCurtain

Racist shit again? I HATE the Browns but I have to get on this whole racism thing. To make this story short, they BOTH suck and should BOTH be in the 70's. Quinn's scared to go deep and looks for those short passes whenever he'd play. Russell's main target is Miller..all the guy ever throws it to whenever I see them play. Yes, I know tight ends are a favorite QB target…but Russell just over does it. There ARE other guys to throw it to. Maybe he's racist for always thowing it to the "white boy"? Yeah, that statement was just as stupid as your's. Anyways, plus, he holds onto the ball too long. Please, don't even waste your time getting on Roethlisberger… I know he holds onto it long too.

If anything, you're racist just thinking something stupid like that.

      • sunnydale

Oh please you probably seen JaMarcus Russell play two at the most.
