Larry Fitzgerald Makes Case For Madden 2010 Cover

At the mid-point of the season it was Anquan Boldin who appeared to be the WR most deserving of the Madden 2010 cover, though the uncertainty of him remaining with the Cardinals severely hampers the chances of it happening. Then it was Andre Johnson that really emerged and remains one of the favorites based on the regular season. The community seems to like him as a potential choice.

Now with the performance in the playoffs that Larry Fitzgerald has turned in he has to be considered one of the top possibilities. He has broken the record for most receiving yards in a postseason and had three TDs in the NFC Championship game. A total of  five TDs in the playoffs along with 23 catches. The Cardinals have done the completely unexpected by reaching the Super Bowl which just adds to the appeal of having one of their players on the cover.

The only thing that might hold him back is the recent news of a domestic violence accusation. Even though that seems pretty thin EA has attempted to choose players that have a clean background and wide-ranging appeal for their covers as of late.

I’m leaning towards the cover of 2010 going to a wide receiver or a defensive player. If I were to take a guess at this point I see the pick being made out of Andre Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Ed Reed, and Troy Polamalu. As always there will be a great deal of discussion around the potential cover athletes heading up to when the announcement is usually made shortly before the draft.

I have to admit I was pretty stuck in my thinking that Andre Johnson was the best wideout in the NFL. After seeing these playoffs and seeing Fitz thrash two good D's in Carolina & Philly I've changed my thought. Fitz is the most dominant wide receiver in the game right now!

I would really like to see Madden go classic and put someone like Walter Peyton on the cover.

If not, I agree with jojo that it is defenses that win games. My top five candidates:

    1) Troy Palomolu (most dominant safety in the NFL)
    2) Albert Haynesworth (had MVP-type season until he got hurt)
    3) Ed Reed (Pick Six, need I say more)
    4) James Harrison (Pitt OLB is a beast)
    5) Bob Sanders (MVP of the Colts)

No DeMarcus Ware? I doubt Sanders would be picked cause of how much time he loses due to injuries.

      • Julian

They need to go defense this year UNLESS it's Fitzgerald. I disagree with Haynesworth because he has not proven to me he is an example of someone that can be looked up to. Stomping on players heads after a play is over should eliminate you FOREVER from being on the cover of Madden. I like Ed Reed and D. Ware though.

Haynesworth isn't a Pacman Jones….What NFL player doesn't take a cheap shot here or there? Haynesworth is the first defensive interior down lineman to cause offenses to structure gameplans around.

Let's take a look at some of the other Madden cover athletes….Ray Lewis covered up a murder…Vick killed dogs (although it wasn't discovered until a couple of years later)….And the guy from San Diego did steroids…..

Hell, Butkus and Alex Karas did a lot more than stomp on heads….

          • Julian

Dirty players should not be cover athletes. There are far more players worthy than just Haynesworth who are not disgraces. It was a joke when people were calling for Sean Taylor to be on the cover after he took a cheap helmet-to-helmet shot on a punter in the pro bowl. Now people want me to buy a game with a player who stomps on players heads once a play is over? Get REAL. He had a great season, and is a great DT. He is not a good person though. Fitz is a good guy, well spoken, does his job every week, and put ARZ on his back to get to the Super Bowl. He is the most deserving.

i think a guy like haynesworth would be interesting because the line play needs to be drastically changed. Take the jets for example. in a 3-4 defense you have one NT and he is double and some times even triple teamed. this year when kris jenkins was 1 on 1 he dominated but this isnt the case with madden so if they want to focus on that aspect of the game then a guy like haynesworth might be a good choice.

Fitz were be a great choice! I live in Phoenix but I'm originally from D.C. I've been here for 10 years & I still can't believe the Cardinals are in the Superbowl! You have to live here to know the feeling. This has been the worst franchise in football history. Their owner is known as the cheapest owner in the league. The Cardinals players actually pay for their own equipment. WTF? After we got the new stadium built a few years ago the whole losing culture has changed here! I'm a Skins fan at heart but I root for the Cards. Fitz is my favorite player so it's only right that he's on the cover!

    How about Julius Peppers?

He'll be all over the news whether he changes teams, or gets franchised and tries to force a trade.. He's an elite, almost one of a kind player who's about to emerge from the Carolina media dead zone. He'll jump at the chance to be on the cover, and EA can market improvements in the pass rush, I assume they'll finally address the fact that you can't see a difference between 99 and 60 rated DE's in the game.

    • KRIS

he wont be on the cover. not becauase hes a bum cause hes a beast. but the fact that their is a huge chance that he wont be in a panthers uni next year will be the reason he wont be on the cover. they cant throw the guy on the cover in a three point stance with a carolina jersey if hes forcin fumbles for the broncos.

The problem with putting Andre Johnson on the cover is that his team sucks & nobody outside of Texas really knows about him ( besided diehard fans). Not only that but part of having a cover athlete is being able to market the game using him. Being that the Cards are in the Superbowl reguardless if they win or lose, the country will now know who Larry Fitzgerald is (meaning the average fan). Fitz would be a perfect choice.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/Skihawks Skihawks

The Texans were 8-8 the past two years. My Hawks were 4-12 and my home town Lions were 0-16. That is the definition of suck….

If it is not a defensive player or Walter Peyton, I say put Calvin Johnson on the cover….Wearing his Georgia Tech uniform….

      • Josh

Yea you're right..I guess saying they suck is pretty harsh. They were average at best. But my point is being that the Cardinals are getting this National exposure it would be a perfect time to go with Fitz. He's already set a playoff record as a receiver & there's still a game left to play. This dude is amazing!

  • Mr. EA Sports

I know that everybody is waiting for my analysis after the championship games but I was a little busy and didn't have time to break down the tape. I saw a bit of the eagles-cardinals game but i have not seen any of the steelers-ravens game. Here's my take on the eagles. McNabb is good but not great because he has this habit of immatating a lawn chair(folding up) in clutch moments. Philly has had a chance to win or tie on it's last drive in 2 NFC championship games and the Super Bowl and he came up empty every time. Also to note he came up empty against Carolina and Tampa Bay. Remember he could not score a single TD against Carolina and he threw that backbreaking INT for a TD to Ronda Barber in the Tampa Bay game. Philly blew it's last chance and now has to rebuild and watch the decade of Dallas dominance starting in 2009. Philly defense seems to have been a little overrated as they gave up everything to Fitzgerald. Kris no need to cry though it's just a game. Whether you know this or not I do not play favorites and do not have an affiliation to any NFL club. I got the tape of both games and will review them sometime this week. Kris if you would like to review the tapes too just let me know so that I can show you all of the formations and what went wrong. Also I would like to mention that Pittsburgh won and I highly doubt that Ed Reed did anything in that game, I got to review the tape. Pittsburgh doesn't throw the ball that much and since Ed Reed plays 30 yards down the field, the only plays he could make would be the ones where a player broke off a long run. I never question his ability to defend the pass, what I question is his ineptitude to do anything else. Hence the term "one trick pony". I will have that review of the tape at the end of this week and if anyone needs help watching flim just let me know. Remember people the tape doesn't lie. My PS3 account name is MR_E-A_Sports in case anybody needs a thorough beatdown in Madden. Come one come all.

u dont have a favorite team huh? i think all of ur recent posts and even this one shows whos jock ur riding. and in case u didnt kno the eagles r not rebuilding reid and mcnabb r comin back and how can u say that was on mcnabb he put up three str8 td drives to bring us back and give us the lead (only great qbs can do that) and the defense folded not him. and half of those incompletions were drops anyway. we will come back next season with houshyamama or ocho cinco and get right back to where we left off this season. good luck to ur cowboys tho it should be fun to see what they do in the offseason

Just a review for you Kris because you seem to have not answered this statement. What does Brady, Manning, Romo and Favre have in common? They all inspire people to play better. McNabb WR's dropping passes leads me to believe that he doesn't inspire his WR corps. Kinda hard to be inspired by a guy who refusing to keep the play alive. You know I have seen a lot of tape on McNabb and all he has to do on all of those drives is extend the play or run for the 1st down. The tape shows McNabb usually has happy feet locks his knees and delivers a hard to catch pass. Kris did you know that is the main reason as to why McNabb throws bad short passes? He locks his knees when he throws that short pass, the film shows all of this. When he throws the deep pass he doesn't lock his knee but when throwing the short pass he gets anxious and locks that front knee which is a sign of bad mechanics. I could go on and on about poor mechanics but the fact is and has always been he doesn't get it done in the clutch. In NFC Championship games McNabb is 1-4 with 2 losses coming at home. That is not the resume of a great player. With the exception of the 1st championship game against St. Louis, Philly should have won 4 in a row with at least 2 Super Bowl wins. The "human lawn chair" seems to keep holding them back.

That is not the resume of a great player. With the exception of the 1st championship game against St. Louis, Philly should have won 4 in a row with at least 2 Super Bowl wins. The "human lawn chair" seems to keep holding them back.

I didn't think McNabb folded. He played pretty well considering he is lacking true offensive weapons. DeSean Jackson is solid but outside of that his receiving corp is limited.

The Eagles didn't lose because of McNabb, the vaunted Eagles' D got shredded by an offense that is clicking on all cylinders. If your team scores 25 points in the playoffs that team should win….

The Cards are playing outstanding football especially considering the way they finished the regular season. Knocking off the Panthers on the road was, not to sound obvious, the biggest win of the post season.

The Cards O vs the Pitt D is going to be a great matchup…..

u dont have a favorite team huh? i think all of ur recent posts and even this one shows whos jock ur riding. and in case u didnt kno the eagles r not rebuilding reid and mcnabb r comin back and how can u say that was on mcnabb he put up three str8 td drives to bring us back and give us the lead (only great qbs can do that) and the defense folded not him. and half of those incompletions were drops anyway. we will come back next season with houshyamama or ocho cinco and get right back to where we left off this season. good luck to ur cowboys tho it should be fun to see what they do in the offseason

1. BRIAN DAWKINS!
    2. Fitz
    3. Warner
    4. Jacobs
    5. Troy P.

no reed because hes only a cov. safety you need to be able to hit. D. ware is fishing during the wild card round after getting torched in week 17. A. Johnson didnt even make post season and Fitz is double as good. B Dawk, yes im a huge EAGLES fan but wow after he should of been retired 2 years ago, he comes back and has a pro bowl year at age 35, yea hes not a great cov. safety any more but he CAN HIT LIKE NO BODY ELSE EVER! What about Kurt Warner the guy is ancient and picked apart the EAGLES d with all the time he had now in the SB and will be a hall of famer. Fitz do I need to explain even I am a guy that says a wr doesnt make a huge impact in a game, well he definitely does. Jacobs had a great reg. season until he played Philly d. and Troy P. is an all around safety who is in the SB.

Did you really just insinuate Ed Reed can't put a hit on someone? Watch some football man.

      • Mr. EA Sports

Yes, it's true Ed Reed can not do much else besides cover. It's kind of hard to make a play at the line of scrimmage when you are standing 30 yards back.

Uhh, I beg to differ that Dawkins can hit like no one else, ever…..There is a certain safety by the name of Ronnie Lott that was a better hitter than Dawkins….No disrespect to Dawkins (who is one of my faves)….What about Jack Tatum? That guy was ferocious….
