Another long day with MLB 09 The Show is complete. This time around my time was split between exhibition games, Road To The Show, practice drills, and grabbing screenshots and some video highlights. I’m not sure when I’ll have those screens and clips back from SCEA but I’m hopeful that will happen by the end of the weekend.
Out of those things about all I can discuss right now is the gameplay. The others will have to wait for another day. If you missed the first report from the event make sure to check that out here. Continue on for some more general thoughts and attempts at answering a few more questions.
While I mentioned the exceptional job done on lighting this year I haven’t mentioned how nice the crowd looks. The models are varied enough, they are active, and seem to respond well based on the situations. You’ll also see fans walking around the stadium in areas they they flow through in real life. Occasionally they’ll be seeing going up/down the aisles and not just fans but also vendors.
Users can draw walks if they are patient. Seemed to happen a little more frequently than last year. Wearing pitchers down and working the count is critical to success.
Over 700 new game play animations, over 400 new presentation animations, and over 150 new personalized pitcher and batter animations. There is a new tag system with over 100 tags to cover all situations. Obviously I didn’t get to see many of these but the animations that I did witness were all really natural and looked good. Having so many new ones should help to keep the game feeling fresh.
A new element to consider this year is the hot shot misses and bobbles. Those make things interesting at times, now not everything is routine. Those are really neat to see also.
I played a game on legend difficulty just because I had to see how I would fare against it. I actually came out of that in better shape than I had anticipated. After giving up five runs through the first three innings I was able to go the last six without allowing another run. So I felt pretty good about that. What did frustrate me was getting one-hit. In the game I was the Brewers going up against the Rockies. Aaron Cook went the distance giving up just the one hit and striking out 12. I was having success making contact but the timing window is very small in that mode. It was a fun challenge though.
Overall Rating: #6 Angels – #7 Rays – #8 Tigers – #9 Twins – #10 Reds
I’ll be posting up the rankings for each team (batting, pitching, defense, overall) in the near future.
In the coming weeks I’ll be able to talk about some of the other areas of the game. Until then if there is anything I missed feel free to leave a comment. You can also check out the thread on OS where the others who were in attendance continue actively posting. To sum everything up I was very impressed with the game. While nothing stood out being a big surprise most everything has been improved upon since last year. The result likely will be satisfaction for fans of The Show series.

when you were playing in Tampa did you hear cow bells or other stadium specific sounds?
January 31, 2009 at 5:32 am
I actually didn't have my tv up loud, maybe one of the others guys know. I did hear some sort of siren in St. Louis after a homerun. Not sure if that is a stadium specific sound or not.
January 31, 2009 at 4:28 pm
They have a homerun siren at Busch Stadium in real life. It was on '08 though, so it isn't new.
Also the Reds being in the top ten..are you kidding me? They're the 5th best team in their own division. That's just terrible.
January 31, 2009 at 6:27 pm
Yeah baby, that's my squad!!! Go Cincy…
January 31, 2009 at 7:26 pm
I'm not sure the Reds should be tenth but they will compete, they have made some solid moves to shore up areas of weakness.
January 31, 2009 at 5:34 am
thanks for answering
January 31, 2009 at 5:39 am
Pasta did you by chance capture any screens or videos from Kauffman Stadium?
January 31, 2009 at 5:59 am
Yeah I did take one screen. No guarantee that I'll be getting all of the screens to post up that I took though.
January 31, 2009 at 6:02 am
Good to see you had a good time. I cannot wait for this game. Im assuming you cannot comment on in franchise if teams start out with a bus
January 30, 2009 at 10:09 pm
Pasta, any new fielding camera angles, or still just low, medium and high? Thanks
January 31, 2009 at 6:11 am
Hey bro, what TV was the game playing on?
January 31, 2009 at 6:21 am
Awesome.
January 31, 2009 at 7:12 am
Has the commentary changed at all? A few games ive played have had little done to the commentary from last year and wasnt very exciting. And is there anything special about the allstar game?
January 31, 2009 at 7:32 am
Pasta, did they add any new homerun camera angles this year?last years cams were horribe you couldn't see where the ball went,I know most baseball fans like to see a cool homerun shot and admire it.
How are the Stadium Jumbotron celebrations?
Did they bring back the fireworks?
Thanks.
January 31, 2009 at 8:59 am
this screenshot is much better looking, although ive still yet to see a player who doesnt look like a beefcake model
January 31, 2009 at 9:40 am
Oh yeah look at the defined butt cheeks on that hunky 1st baseman….
January 31, 2009 at 9:41 am
LoL at PastaPadre thinking 2 passed balls per game were too many. Do you watch Baseball? How many do you typically seeing during the course of a game?
January 31, 2009 at 12:03 pm
yeah its obvious someone on THE SHOWS development team has some kind of weird fetish for making everyone look muscular
January 31, 2009 at 12:21 pm
Pasta, what do you mean by presentation animations? Does that mean camera pans over to the crowd, or graphic overlays, or what? Thanks for all the info you've been feedin us!
January 31, 2009 at 1:16 pm
Can u change player gloves styles to different colors
January 31, 2009 at 9:38 pm
In create-a-player yes, I don't know if you can edit a current player and change his glove though.
January 31, 2009 at 1:57 pm
do the braves have their new alternate jersey this year? and for other teams, do they have the different patches on the sleeves?
January 31, 2009 at 2:14 pm
hey pasta were there a lot more new or revamped pitchig windup and batting stances while u were playing
January 31, 2009 at 9:38 pm
I really couldn't tell you what was new vs what was already in. I know they added a bunch though.
January 31, 2009 at 2:17 pm
also pasta there is a mlb 2k9 teaser up at gamespot looks preety impressive if u want to post it
January 31, 2009 at 3:44 pm
WHAT COLOR IS THE WALL OF THE METS BALLPARK????? THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN THE ENTIRE WORLD!!!
January 31, 2009 at 4:17 pm
its still blue go to hsis first preview
January 31, 2009 at 4:19 pm
The Reds? Are you serious? The Reds are the 5th best team in their own division, yet they're ranked #10. That to me is hilarious.
February 1, 2009 at 2:13 pm
I agree that the Reds have a strong, young nucleus and improved pitching but they are not a top 10 team. However, I wouldn't be surprised if they are in contention for the wild card.
Teams on paper mean nothing. Just check the Yankees….
February 2, 2009 at 3:07 pm
Lemme guess….a Cardinals fan…………….I can smell them a mile away!
January 31, 2009 at 4:22 pm
Do you feel that the player contracts are realistic?
January 31, 2009 at 9:37 pm
Sorry, I didnt look into contracts.
January 31, 2009 at 5:07 pm
If you notice that you're hitting a lot of homeruns, it could just be that you're playing with the Brewers!
January 31, 2009 at 5:47 pm
Hey Pasta, when was the roster cut-off date? Also, when does Sony plan on releasing the first roster update? The first day or end of the first week?
January 31, 2009 at 9:37 pm
Not sure what the specific date was but there were some recent transactions in there. It was probably a week or two ago. I didn't ask about the first roster update sorry. It'll probably be release day.
January 31, 2009 at 6:04 pm
yeah, two passed balls is pretty average, on some cases below average. depends on the pitcher though
January 31, 2009 at 6:31 pm
If it weren't for injuries, the Reds woulda been much more competitive last year. Harang, Volquez, Arroyo and Cueto anchor one of the top young rotation in the bigs. Along with future stars Bruce, Votto and Phillips this team has some serious potential if they remain healthy! They get SS Gonzalez back this year too…
January 31, 2009 at 6:38 pm
The Reds won't finish any higher than fourth in the Central. I'm not sure why you can't see that.
January 31, 2009 at 6:42 pm
Ok, maybe third at best, but I still doubt it. Either way the Cubs and Cardinals are both far better than the Reds; and nobody can seriously think the Reds are a top 10 team.
January 31, 2009 at 6:47 pm
Pasta, can you enlighten us about whether or not they have included a Home Run derby?
January 31, 2009 at 9:36 pm
No HR derby
January 31, 2009 at 7:31 pm
Pasta, if you got to see a home run. Has the homerun view changed? Are we able to see the ball all the way through to the end, or does it goto a cut scene of the player looking at the ball?
January 31, 2009 at 8:42 pm
You can turn the homerun camera off. It's in the options. Without it, you can see the ball clear the wall just fine.
January 31, 2009 at 9:35 pm
Sometimes yes, other times you'd get the no-doubter cut scene
February 1, 2009 at 2:14 pm
I like the no-doubter. Of course, The Show 08 had a good mixture last year….
January 31, 2009 at 8:49 pm
all they need to do is allow you to edit builds and the problem will be fixed
January 31, 2009 at 9:29 pm
One of the people at the community event posted over at OS that there is no home run derby in the game.
January 31, 2009 at 9:35 pm
Thats right, there is no HR derby
January 31, 2009 at 11:06 pm
Do they still use the bars to show the player ratings?
February 1, 2009 at 2:18 am
Yes, the bars.
January 31, 2009 at 11:06 pm
^ Oops, meant to post a new comment
February 1, 2009 at 12:15 am
Are you able to use any mic, including the wireless mic, to record crowd chants?
February 1, 2009 at 2:19 am
You can use the PS Eye or any bluetooth headset
February 1, 2009 at 1:48 am
Pasta is base stealing to easy with a quick runner, is it balanced?
February 1, 2009 at 2:20 am
Tough to judge at this point, I don't think I could say with any certainty one way or the other
February 1, 2009 at 2:41 am
do you do the date wen the demo comes out pasta???
February 1, 2009 at 4:06 am
Pasta, based on what you've seen so far, how do you think the reviews will turn out once it's released? 10/10? 9/10? Does it have the potential to be the greatest sports game ever?
February 1, 2009 at 9:17 pm
Its difficult to say after just playing for two days. I think that any review below an 8 can easily be seen as bogus. Without knowing how well online will be I wouldn't be able to say its more than that right now. I don't like putting a score on it anyway. I will say I'll be really pissed if 1UP tries to pull the crap they have the last two years again.
February 1, 2009 at 6:16 am
i didnt think it would be possible, but im much less hyped about the game then I was a few months ago
February 1, 2009 at 6:52 am
Pasta, does the grass look better this year than it did last year? In some stadiums in last year's game, the grass didn't look very realistic.
February 1, 2009 at 9:43 am
can we edit player builds
February 1, 2009 at 1:01 pm
Pasta, did you find out if the different stat boxes in the demo last year are going to be included in franchise mode??
February 1, 2009 at 2:12 pm
Pasta stated that the walls were blue in his article. The reason being, per Pasta, is that the development team was not provided all of the details in regards to the new parks by MLB (I am assuming).
If you want green walls, change the hue on your television…..
February 2, 2009 at 11:33 pm
The walls are probably blue because all of the renderings that you find of citi field have blue walls in the outfield as seen on mets.com
February 1, 2009 at 2:27 pm
Pasta, how much better would you say MLB 09 is compared to 08?
February 1, 2009 at 3:34 pm
when is this game coming out? i forgot and dont feel like searching for it
February 1, 2009 at 4:14 pm
I hope the playoff atmosphere is better this year, more crowd noises, rally towels etc..? Pasta, did you notics anything like that?
February 1, 2009 at 7:37 pm
I read that the legend players are listed with the free agents. Is there an option to turn legend players off, like in MVP? I really don't want them to be in my franchise, and I think it would really take away from the season if they sign with teams.
February 1, 2009 at 8:57 pm
Yo Pasta, anything about the World Baseball Classic 09 being on this game?
Another thing: You said that u will be able to use Blutooth headsets, but can you use Wired Headsets for the chanting option?
February 1, 2009 at 9:14 pm
No to the WBC. Not sure if it is because they don't have rights to it or if they just chose not to incorporate it. Can wired headsets even be used on the PS3?
February 2, 2009 at 11:25 pm
Oh, too bad, i really was hoping to look for it…But thanks for the news, anyway
Yes, they (wired headphone) can be used on PS3…so i think they will work fine on the game….
February 2, 2009 at 4:28 am
Player models must be fixed
February 2, 2009 at 6:20 am
I can't wait for this game to come out i just brought me a ps3! I use to always play the 2k series now i laugh at them now seeing the videos and the pictures of this game!
