Screenshot Feature Included in MLB 09 Demo

Since the community preview event I have gotten many questions regarding how the screenshots were taken. This is a built-in feature of the PS3 tying in with MLB 09 The Show and the demo also includes it. So here is how the screens are taken along with a few I pulled out this evening.

Use the replay feature to position the screenshot you would like to take. Everything on the screen will be captured so be sure to hide the replay option bar and get the selection circle out of view. Pull up the XMB and scroll over to to the Photo section. There will now be a “Save Screenshot” option there. Click on that and it’ll take you back to the game where you can now hit X and capture the screen. Under the Photo section there will now be a folder with your saved images. Then use a flash drive to get the images from your PS3 to your computer by scrolling onto them, hitting the triangle, and choosing to copy.

ps3savescreenshot

One of the screens I took out at the community event that was especially well liked is the one that came directly from gameplay pitcher cam with ARod getting rung up. During single-player pulling up the XMB freezes the action which is how I was able to grab that one. However cut scenes do not pause so you can have the screenshot feature up and ready but you’ll have to snap it as the action goes by.

Feel free to post links to some of the screens you have taken from the demo and I may post them up in a future article.

Not good. Werth wears a long black wrist band/brace, not a small red one. The least they can do with the generic player models is get the players accessories right

I own both systems and my PS3 sat dormant for a long time. The Show is, in my opinion, a system mover for baseball fans. LBP is decent but repetitive and the Killzone 2 demo is outstanding.

Although I like XBox Live much better than the PS Network….

I really enjoyed the demo, I pitched a no hitter the first time i played it on veteran… and i only won because of a 2 run homer in the bottom of the 5th. So regardless of difficulty I still had a good time. There were some instances where I could tell that is was indeed several weeks old, so it has little of the polish that will be present in the final release.

I think the lighting is very well done. I've never played the game, but every year I consider getting a PS3 for this reason. I am turned off by the player models though. Very short legs and arms.

I downloaded the demo last night and here are my impressions… very slow to download and install.. about 2.5-3 hours. Once I got it up and running though, the lighting is probably the first thing that stands out at you. Very nice work by Sony on the lighting! Just the small things such as the way the sky boxes are lit up and the way it gradually becomes darker each inning adds for a nice touch. I also like the fact that the bell sways back and forth and rings on a Philly homerun. I don't remember that in last game. The graphics have definitely been enhanced. The uniforms, helmets, stadium (you only get to play in Philly for the demo) and player models look much better than last year. Game play feels like last year's game which isn't a bad thing with some new animations and better double plays. Overall, very solid game. Can't wait until the game is released on March 3rd!

same here, I just upgraded my high speed internet to what my ISP calls high speed ultra. They told me I'd see download rates of maybe 300kbps, but I'm getting more like 650kbps. Only costs me $5 more a month to boot. You should see if your ISP has something like that Sean.

A few more impressions also… I was surprised how many errors there were. In the four inning game, Jimmy Rollins threw two balls over Ryan Howard at 1st into the stands. Jason Bartlett also bobbled one at shortstop. Maybe it was just Sony trying to show us through the demo that there are more errors in the game this year. I also hit a home run with Victorino down the line that hit the foul pole. The animation was cool with the ball bouncing back onto the field. The other home run was by Ryan Howard who crushed it and stood in the batter's box watching it fly over the fence. Very nice animation!

oh yeah i have to pitch like i'm the pitcher, and bat like i'm the batter, otherwise it takes away from the experience for me.

i noticed the pitching meter is a little faster than last year's.

Pasta: You stated in a previous thread that the demo is derived from a build of the game from a month ago. That being said, this game is absolutely beautiful and am sure it will be even more phenomenal once the polish it up.

There are 2 particular areas in which I noticed a difinite difference from previous years:
    1) Double play execution
    2) Pitching

    1) The double play execution in this game is as smooth and fast as it gets. The players get rid of the ball with a quickness and the game just feels right.

    2) The pitching is alot more challenging this year. I have noticed that the downward movement of the pitch meter is faster and a bit more difficult to hit the yellow line with precision. I actually walked 3 players in 2 games while playing this demo. I don't think i walked 3 players total in the entire year of playing MLB 08.

Yeah…really the only things from the demo so far I've noticed that are different from what I played are some of the stances hadn't been updated in the demo yet, and check swings aren't as responsive in the demo.

Although the game is familiar, it is different. The visuals are much smoother this year and the outfielders take a more realistic approach to the ball. Everything looks outstanding.

I like the opportunity to get a glimpse of the dynamic lighting as well. I used the Rays and in the top of the 1st inning, I had trouble reading pitches due to the sun.

A few things I noticed that are improved / different:

    1) A pitched ball is no longer a white circle. You can actually see the threads. When Hammels threw a curve, you could see the rotation. It was nice.

    2) Presentation…Different angled highlights are excellent.

    3) Very little stutter in the framerate

    4) No beach ball in the area of foul balls

    5) Base coaches are wearing helmets

    6) Shiny numbers on jerseys toned down

    7) The crowd looks fantastic (no pun intended)
    8) Pitching meter is more challenging, which is a good thing. It is simple yet difficult….

    9) Field degradation looked good

    10) Liked the feedback information in regards to swings…Much more detailed….

I didn't see any beach balls in the first game I played last night. I played another game this morning though and did a beach ball once. Also, in the second game I finally got a chance to see the Philly Phinatic. It's kinda cool having mascots in the game. One area I have an issue with so far is that I hit a ball into the right field corner with Cole Hamels and only ended up with a single. I know Hamels is a pitcher and isn't fast but I still should have ended up with a double. It was cool though seeing him with a jacket on. Another thing I noticed is that even though there are a bigger variety of fans, you still see some fans that look identical sitting right next to each other. Still though, you don't notice it that often and the fans look a lot better this year. Overall, I'm more impressed with the demo each time I play it. Good stuff!

The fan variety is much better this year, and some move independent of one another.

One thing I hope Sony fixes for next year is the pickoff move, especially for left-handed pitchers. Unless I am missing something, it is random as to whether the pitcher steps off of the rubber or starts his motion before tossing to first base.

Other than that, this year's game isn't a huge leap over last year but there is enough of the new to differentiate between the two with 09 definitely being an upgrade. I am so glad that SCEA didn't go nuts on trying to over innovate….

      Pasta,

Any news on a MLB 2K9 demo? Thanks again for all of the info….

I've played a few games of the demo, and I can say that if I didn't own MLB 08 I would definitely be purchasing the 09 incarnation. The lighting and new animations are fantastic looking, but playing the demo I still get the feeling that I am playing last years game. Don't get me wrong, I thought MLB 08 was phenomenal and still love the game, but I guess that is my main point. Unless I hear and/or see that there is some more depth/variation to the franchise mode, I can't see myself plunking down another $60 for this game because basically all I would be getting this year for that money is some new animations/features (adding your own sounds to the game sounds cool and all, but I don't see myself using it all that much), a new roster pack and some new things in Road to the Show (which I still play now, and am pretty happy with last year's edition). Last year I was very hyped for this game, as I did not own a baseball game for my PS3, but I will wait and see how the changes are this year (especially with the on-line play).

Nothing to do with being cheap, more of a cost/benefit situation. When you're married and have a couple of teenagers, you'll understand. As the Stones (they're a rock and/or roll band that started in the 60's) said, "You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes you'll find, you get what you need".

I did that last year..bought a ps3 just for the show cause 2k makes garbage…then I sold the PS3 cause well…The Show got boring. Somethin about its simplicity bores me. It just feels like the same thing over and over and over. I know its baseball…Ive been playin ball games since RBI so its not the nature of the game. Im still stuck on the MVP 2005 train. But to me, The Show just gets boring. But if 2k is as bad as last years game…then who knows whatll happen.
