First MLB 2K9 Impressions Out

Operation Sports is the first site to post true impressions of MLB 2K9. Previous hands-on previews have pretty much just summed up the features while making sure to avoid discussing their opinions on the game. However Steve over at OS has laid out some of the things he likes and some of the things that he has found bothersome in the game.

Basically it sounds as though that as expected the game is improved overall. The commentary, presentational elements and flow to the game due to the real-time events provide a much better experience. However some issues such as the framerate (at times) and the CPU swinging at every strike are reason for concern.

I have seen slowdown and loss of frames during certain cut scenes and foul ball situations. Obviously, these instances will not affect the gameplay at all, but there are some that do. For example, I have seen slowdowns on grounders in the infield, pop ups that drop just in front of an outfielder and on occasion after a bunt when the catcher is throwing the ball to first base. Just remember, I am not seeing this stuff all the time, but I am seeing it.

I still can’t get used to seeing that huge pitching circle and flash of light too, I guess I’ll have to see when playing 2K9 if that continues to irk me or if it really isn’t a big deal. Click here to head over and check out the full hands-on preview at OS.

Yeah it doesnt sound like it is really shaping up well if everyone is noticing these problems based off a few innings of video. I get the feeling 2K is going to disappear and not support the game after release like they did last year and like theyve done with every game but NBA 2K9 in the past year.

Can anyone help answer these two questions about MLB 09 The Show?
    1. Can you change the camera view when pitching so the view is behind the pitcher…instead of from the catcher's point of view?
    2. Is there a fantasy draft option for dynasty mode?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

I'm really glad to hear about hit variety. That would make this a much better game, so now I'm hopeful about this game.

I wish the demo would come out! MLB already started their pitchers and catchers showing up in Florida and Arizona.

No one has mentioned anything about the 2k Share feature in any previews? I thoughtI read somewhere you can share Rosters and Sliders. Anyone know if this is still going to be in the game?

The game looks and sounds better than last year, and if there are framerate issues, this can be fixed w/a patch no problem, everybody reading this knows this.

For the life of me, I don't see how people can be so in love with a PORT, same player models as the PS2, same commentary, same one button gameplay, same graphical interface…hell, even nintendo is updating their Mario and Zelda games for the Wii – that's lazy developing..this is next gen, let's get with it.

That game shined last year because the competition was weak. let's be real.

I know that there was a Fantasy Draft option for Franchise mode in MLB '08: The Show last year so it's fair to say that it will also be an option in MLB '09: The Show for this year's game.

MLB The Show won't outsell 2k9 unless of course it buys off its own game, like it did last year.

I agree about the ball cursor when pitching it looks like a volley ball not a baseball. And the weird flash in the circle is annoying as well.I Personally think they should have left the pitching completely the same as last year.

There are so many Show Fanboys here, dude you have a PS3 we get it. Some of us are not so fortunate to spend 600 on a gaming system that has a very small online community. If you have a PS3 you are obviously buying the show and we all know it. I don't understand why it's even such a big competition. You all need to give it a rest. Those of us with a 360 are here to get useful information about the one game we are able to get to satisfy our baseball needs. Honestly the game looks really good and from the videos I really excited to have a change of pace from last year. And anyone who says otherwise clearly isn't stuck with only a 360 So Chill Out. And for the record, and I know you disagree pasta but right stick pitching makes the game feel a lot better than just pressing a button. It actually makes people be good at pitching and try harder. There is nothing wrong with having the buttons for pickup and play but honestly for the hardcore gamer that's boring.

I agree. I own both and the 360 has a much better online experience. The Sony online experience is nice because it is free but I hate that I cannot view other people's profiles, see what games they are playing, and that I cannot submit reviews or complaints against people who cheat and use exploits in games. To top it off, there is no way to avoid them. Sony needs to shelf HOME and add a form of self regulation where players can see and comment on those who ruin the online experiences of others…

I enjoy both systems in terms of games and the PS3 has a nice lineup coming out but overall the system has a ways to go to catch the 360 in terms of a gaming library. Either way, you cannot lose with either system….Outside of the fact if you are a baseball fan your choices are limited…

As far as the stick versus button arguments in regards to pitching, I prefer the buttons. I don't need to have some quirky gimmick that takes time to learn interfere with my game. The nice thing about Sony's mechanic is that it is similar to MVP. If you don't time it just right the pitch may not go where you want it to go unlike 2K8's travesty of messing up a motion with the stick and tossing in the dreaded "meatball"….

To each their own, I guess…

It cracks me up how the people who bitch about the right-stick pitching in 2K8 are always the one's who suck at using it. If you truly take the time to master the pitching gestures and timing, you will be handsomely rewarded. There's nothing better than executing a back-breaking 12-6 curve just right on a 3-2 count and watching the batter stare at it all the way.
