Serious Problem With MLB 2K9 Franchise Mode Discovered (Updated)

As sites began receiving their copies of MLB 2K9 yesterday impressions have started flowing. The most alarming development however is the discovery of a major issue with franchise mode by Chase at Operation Sports. This is something that will negatively affect anyone who plays more than just the first year in franchise. You can start reading about the problem on this page of the forum thread and continue through it to follow further developments.

What is happening is that CPU controlled teams do not have the money available to sign big name free agents. So those big names wallow in free agency and are never picked up. Ironically one of those players is cover athlete Tim Lincecum who teams are unable to sign. Imagine all those players (Albert Pujols, Manny Ramirez, Prince Fielder, Evan Longoria, Felix Hernandez, and so on) no longer being a part of your franchise.

Essentially this ruins franchise mode for anyone who plays more than just the first year. Interestingly it seems that NHL 2K9 had a similar issue and that game was never patched. But lets hope considering the importance of this title that 2K gets on top of this and provides a response that includes their intention of getting it fixed soon.

Update: Apparently there is a patch ready to go on release day to address the issue. While that doesn’t help consumers who don’t have their console connected online at least it will provide the fix for everyone else.

No. This guy is getting an early copy himself, why not just wait to see for yourself before repeating something like this? right?

Bottom line is that he saw some potentially devastating info on a game he loves to hate – and ran to post it on his site. period. and if he had waited just 10 or 15 more minutes, he wouldn't be looking like a fool right now.

Then tried to toss in the "people who play offline won't benefit!" to save face. I admire his hustle though and what he is doing for the online sports gaming community – but the dude is biased. I'm just "stating stuff I see" as well.

Many other titles have done that before. If there is a major problem the responsibility is on them to communicate that they had addressed it. Luckily for everyone involved they have a planned fix for this.

The Show is no doubt a great game, I just wish people would stop hanging it over people's heads all the time. I get it, I own a 360, I can only play 2k9. 2k9 will be a good game, sure it won't be as good as The Show, but it'll be good, and hopefully with Visual Concepts getting a full dev cycle for 2k10, they'll be motivated by the competition, because honestly Kush wasn't. On the bug, thank god there is a patch, but for people without live, 2k9 is pratically useless, if you are like me and love franchise mode.

yes, you only need to install the patch once. As soon as you start up the game on an internet connection and at least a (microsoft silver acct.) it will prompt to download.

Nothing that he posted was not true. And he did update it. And it's still ridiculous that this wasn't found out earlier in the development cycle. But this is the same company that released MLB Front Office Manager, afterall, so I guess we shouldn't be surprised. The only thing 2K sports does right anymore is basketball.

I have both a 360 and a PS3 and I wouldn't touch 2K9 with a ten foot pole. Sorry for those of you that don't have a PS3. I would be pissed if I were you. Everyone deserves a chance to play the best sports game of all time in MLB: The Show. And I've played em all. Can't wait for the 3rd!

Life is pretty simple boys. If a game has issues, it has issues. If a company has a reputation for problematic games, it has a reputation. At least until it makes adjustments and gets out of the Penalty Box. 2K once made solid sports games and still make a solid basketball game, but all their other efforts the last few years have been very lackluster. So they are in the Missouri Show Me mode, where they do not get the benefit of the doubt from intelligent people, until they ante up and get consistent in their quality once again.

As for a patch, just because they say they are releasing an opening day patch, doesnt mean it will fix all the issues. Lets wait and see, Of course, they are going to say that, so you go buy the game the first day, thinking all will be ok. Just like last year, when they wouldnt put out a demo until after release.

Again, no free passes until they earn it. 2k has become a company with no scruples under current management, until they prove otherwise.
