FNR4 Removes Button Punching

FNR3 brought about a debate between analog and button punchers and the possible in-balance presented by allowing both to be used. A recent preview from Gamespy discusses how Fight Night Round 4 is completely removing the option to use the buttons to punch.

Button mashing has been banished. Round 4 is going to force you to use the right stick to punch. After years of enduring randomly button-mashing boxers, I’m relieved to hear that they’ll have to work a little harder to land some blows. Perhaps to compensate, you can now chain together multiple attacks with the right stick. For example, a one-two combo can be inputted before the animation of the first punch is complete. It sounds cool, but I’m a little skeptical until I’ve played it. EA promises that you’ll be able to cancel commands with a button tap, lest you waste stamina. I need to try it and see how the dynamics balance out.

So the question becomes what are the buttons utilized for now? If they are being used for other functions it is somewhat understandable why the decision was made. If button punching was removed in order to force everyone to the analog then I don’t agree with that. It could have been locked for online play so that both fighters use the analog. But for offline different control options should be available unless there is good reason. Hopefully EA will come out and clarify the thinking behind this decision for FNR4. Vote in the poll below and leave your thoughts in the comments.

There should be options, but if there isn't i will still get it when it comes out.

I am not a fan of losing options. If a game I enjoy has a control scheme that I like then all of a sudden I am forced to play it a different way, I would hesitate to buy it day one.

Although I enjoy the analog sticks I am sure there are a number of people who like the classic controls. Getting rid of the "classic" controls is odd since Peter Moore has talked more and more about EA's games as casual gamer friendly.

    Not a good move….

^^^^This guy sits here and apparently reads interviews and takes them as the gospel truth. LMAO. ITS EA SPORTS, just go from recent history

the smart thing to do would be to have it as an option but leave it to EA sports to take it away from us once again.

Well now I'm not buying it. The analog stick punching is stupid and in no way even close to realistic.

This is just another typical EA move.

I always used the right stick anyway, but I agree with you Pasta. Online play should be pure and I don't think button mashing should be used, but if someone wants to play by themselves, they should be able to set the controls however they feel like.

I also used the buttons for certain punches… personally I dont like this move, but it can be justified if theyre used for something else because then ill just deal with it. But removing them just to remove them would be BS. Knowing EA theyll remove them just to remove them then add them to FNR5 as a "new" feature.

It's never good when a game forces you to play one way. Why the hell would EA not make it an option? I personally prefer the button punching & it amazes me when games do this. If we've gotten used to a certain controll scheme then why take that away. It's a no brainer to make the controls optional. Not a good move EA! Out of all people EA should definately understand this simple concept.

That's just fuckin insane! At least have it as an option offline. They just cut the sales of this game by about 60%.

Who the fuck is the CEO of EA? Barney Fife?

In know im beating a dead horse, but the option to be able to press the buttons to punch should still be in the game. Me personally, I love the analog punching because it is easier to memorize than annoying button combos like X X X X X O O O O O X O X O X O X O triangle (you can tell i play PS3) But again taking away the original way to play is taking away something that was the beginning of Fight Night.

P.S. When is the new Madden NFL 10 Info coming out ???

Man, I preferred the buttons. I didn't even mash them, I just never got the hang of the analog system and if I can push a button to achieve the same result, why learn a new system? Now I'm stuck learning the sticks, I guess. Not the end of the world, but I question how much junk they've crammed into the game if they don't have disc space for 2 control sets.

they should have it as an option. ranked should be analig only and this may not be a good idea but its an idea. unranked should make u have to choose the same as ur opponent. example: if u choose buttons and ur opponent chooses analog, the game wont start until both have the same controls set. this way, if someone is ganna button mash, the other person is too so it makes it more fair.
