Is Peyton Manning the Madden 10 Cover Athlete?

The place-holder cover for Madden 10 was recently posted by Gamestop. Usually this leads to some speculation as to whether the silhouette image is the actual cover or if it’s something generic that will be replaced after the official announcement. In the past there have been times it has turned out to be the cover image but more often it wasn’t. The ones for NCAA Football 10 are actually the covers from 09 just switched around.

So I took a look at the one for Madden 10. For whatever reason right away I thought of Peyton Manning. So I got to searching through google images and I think I spotted the actual picture that was used as the silhouette. Continue on to take a look at both and leave your thoughts in the comments.

Now this doesn’t necessarily mean that Manning is the choice and that this image is what will end up on the cover. It could just be what they chose for the silhouette and nothing more. If this isn’t the image they used for the silhouette it is strikingly similar. Coming off an MVP season and being one of the most marketable players in the NFL it wouldn’t be surprising if he was player EA went with for Madden 10. I’m hesitant to believe they’d go QB three years in a row though.

So maybe this means nothing, or maybe it means something? Feel free to speculate…

I don't think there has been a single Madden since the original NFL 2K in 1999 that has been better than any 2K Football game, even the half-ass All Pro is a game I'd take over any Madden's since the 90's. Ever since Madden made the jump to polygons it's been utter crap.

Madden 98 for PS1… the last truly great Madden.

I dont want to read all 62 comments, But doesnt anyone know that this silhoutte is facing backwards. Seeing as we see the back of the players elbows. Thus, it just CAN'T be the picture you suggest Padre.

I actually really thought about this. I think you could be right here. It looks exactly like what he did for Superbowl 3. So I could definitely see this happening.

Just a hunch, but I'm betting on a defensive player for the cover this year. We haven't had one since 2005 with Ray Lewis. I'm betting the silhouette has nothing to do with the cover athlete. If I had a gun to my head and had to guess I'd say Troy Polamalu since The Steelers won the Super Bowl and he has a unique look. Somebody above me mentioned James Harrison and seeing how he was defensive player of the year who can argue? I just think Polamalu is more "marketable" and recognizable with his unique look, plus he's a great player.

The guy in the silhouette looks very short. If you notice it cuts off his legs. In the silhouette it shows the whole body. It could be Darren Sproles! But i'm just kidding. It doesn't look like Peyton Manning to me though.

Plus the helmet is also the newer helmets. But it would be cool if we had some old pics of Madden himself on the cover.

Thanks to 360 king, WR11 and Peckin for supporting my pick, now that I know I'm not the only one that saw that, I feel more confident. And it would make sense going with the whole AFL theme they are pushing. And that was the probably the most important game in AFL history. And the other thing is, if it was Peyton Manning, wouldn't they put a shot of him in an actual game. This would be the first cover that was not a screenshot from gameplay. But who's iconic image is more well known than the actual gameplay that day? None other than Joe Namath himself!

Do you guys really think they are going to push the AFL thing that hard to the point where they would put Joe on the cover? I don't know. I just don't see it. A lot of the Madden target demographic probably knows little if anything about the guy sadly.

Who do you know that has ever bought, or not bought, Madden because of who was on the cover? I don't know anyone that has. Let me know if you've run across someone who's stated that, I'd be genuinely surprised if there were any.

The NFL is pushing the whole AFL thing so much that they are promoting the AFL teams wearing throwback jerseys, (new revenue stream by selling old AFL throwbacks). They are also having 4 AFL teams play in their throwbacks on the first Monday Night game of the season. I'm not sure it is likely, but it is definitely a possibility.

The guy is walking away from the camera. So no, it's not that picture Pasta. I think this is just a fill in until the real picture gets put in there. My guess is that the cover athlete will either be Deangelo Williams or Adrian Peterson.
