Breaking Down The First Madden 10 Screenshot

On Monday the first screenshot for Madden 10 was revealed by Peter Moore. Today Art Director Michael Young goes though the numerous improvements or additions that are on display in that screen. The refs, chain gang, and hand towels were the most obvious but there are others such as depth of field, Super Bowl patches and fields, secondary color equipment, and better name layout on jerseys.  You can read up on everything on the Inside EA Blog here.

In today’s blog, I’m going to go to really dive into some detail on one of our new features that you likely will have noticed right off the bat: Depth of Field.  In addition, I will talk about the 9 other Madden NFL 10 enhancements shown in the shot unveiled on Peter’s blog.

All of that alone would be great but they’ve gone even further by considering the feedback over the last two days regarding the size of Ben Roethlisberger. Some people felt he looked a little thin so now they’ve beefed him up a bit. The screenshot above shows the updated Big Ben. Feel free to leave your thoughts on that new screen in the comments.

I'm glad they made Big Ben bigger. They need to make JaMarcus Russell bigger to. Russell is 6'6 260 but it just didn't seem like it when you use him he felt more like Tony Romo.

Its huge that they made ben bigger. people trashed the 150 pound looking ben, so they fixed it. this is what we need more of. and this is also why we need that kind of feedback, and to be rid of the ones who want to go on about how unimportant certain feedback is becuz itz just a game

The shot looks great, it really does. I just hope we get NFL 2K5-ish presentation. There is NO reason not to. If they can do that, or give me close to that, then ill purchase Madden this year.

Looks like EA Blogs are actually seeing early benefits. Continued transparency throughout the development process, rather than getting the usual "it's too late, we'll do it next year."

I read the post before I came here and lookie what I found:

    "Referees on the Field
Unlike last-gen which only had 5, we were able to get all 7 referees in to Madden NFL 10 with AI and a full suite of avoidance (and collision) animations.

    Chain Gang on the Sidelines
Because you see it on Sunday, the chain gang has been added back. They dynamically move up and down the sideline giving clear indication of the first down spot and line of scrimmage."

so now that they've added refs and chaingangs what are the people who constantly whine going to find wrong now?

    • footballgamer

i would like to whine about having playoff banners on the walls and signs on the field that could differentiate between regular season and the playoffs. i'm not much of a franchise gamer nor have i played the latest franchise modes from the previous maddens…….but if you guys ever played one season of the NFL 2K5, they have different banners for each round of the playoffs…….pretty sweet, IMO. i might mention this also on the EA's blogs……..cause if they are going to add the finer details that should be included as well.

      • Shomari

I HATED NFL 2K5. The gameplay was whack. The presentation was cool, but the game itself was garbage.

        • footballgamer

my complaint was not about gameplay……..but a complaint about signs and banners in the playoffs when you play madden. you know the funny thing about your response is that it could be applied to me and other anti-madden fans: "I HATED MADDEN. The gameplay was wack. The franchise or online mode was cool, but the game itself was garbage."

EA, since you're listening, PLEEEZ get rid of the analog kicking controls!!!!!!! ALSO, BTW, THE GAME IS LOOKING MINT! Keep up the great work and……..at the very least………make kicking meters an option!

I agree. Kicking is way too easy….

EA, if you're really listening, re-introduce kicking meters please……………analog is too arcadey, FG/P/KO meters are for more serious SIM players! The new "Depth of Field" looks amazing, BTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/pastapadre pastapadre

One thing I hoped to see this year, maybe more so in NCAA though, is a more difficult kicking system. Its just way too easy to hit long FGs and there is little suspense in anything under 50 yards.

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/igjoe igjoe

I completely agree, but I'm sure it's a hard task to come up with a system that is isn't too easy or overly hard for a wide base of players. I wouldn't mind seeing a change for higher difficulty though.

this is getting worse & worse!!! imo, EA can come out with anything and people will buy it!! they know that, that's why they really haven't come anywhere close to the preview we originally saw back in like 05 or 06!!!

Certainly looks great. I've never been one to get excited about screenshots 5 months before a game's release. Been fooled one too many times. But if it looks this good in motion, then kudos to EA. Massive improvement. Will wait and see, though.

I must say chaingangs and refs should have never left the game, so it's hard to get "exctited" about them adding them back in. It's more of a "it's about time" kinda feeling. Add to other presentation elements, like actually making the Super Bowl and other big games feel like big games. Halftime or post game highlights would be a great addition. And crowd noise. Can we please make this actually sound like a real football game? Football is all about atmosphere.

I agree that the kicking mechanic should be changed. Let's add some excitement to the kicking game. Way too easy.

Regardless, I will be in line at the midnight release of Madden 10. It's kinda become a ritual. I don't know what I would do without a Madden release in August! Just hope they reward all the faithful fans of the series with a great game this year.

Nothing! Refs & chaingangs are the only thing I've been asking for since day one. Now I just hope they add progressive lighting & accelerated clock & I'll be a happy camper. Although the gameplay can always be improved, I never had a major problem with it. It's the presentation that's lacking in Madden to me & it looks like they're focused on that this year.

Come on Madden SHeep, that is a cut scene not the actual game. Madden will be trash just like it is every year.

    • James

Maddens never really trash… it just has no "stick" value to it, last year i rented it played it for a week and got sick of it (mainly due to the lack of franchise depth and presentation details). It just hasnt felt like football for me these past couple years and it hurt to skip the midnight release last year and just rent it. But this years no different because im still skeptical (been fooled into preordering to many times.) Going to be another rental but I'm hoping to get blown away and run to purchase it. Its sad when your favorite sport is football yet you cant even finish a season in franchise mode because you get bored yet your 82 games into your MLB 09 the show franchise.

      • JimBone

You must be mad. Madden 06 and 08 were absolute unspeakable pieces of garbage.

    • super-fan

      TOTALY AGREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The little additions are excellent. I like that EA finally fixed the helmet numbers on the Steelers and Giants. Pasta, the article didn't mention if the chain gangs actually measure for first downs. If you can shoplift some info, that would be sweet…

Also, a tad off topic. Does anyone know if in NCAA 10 if the teams' home end zone will be transferred to the bowl games or are they different? For example, I typically use Notre Dame which has diagonal lines. In bowl games, ND usually has its name in the end zone with team colors. Just curious if there will be different end zone options….

  • SENZ

When I read the post of the lead developer to the Show team, I instantly had hope for Madden for the first time in 10 years. They've already managed to fix about six things that haven't been fixed since the next generation systems came out, like chain gangs/etc.

This will be the first time in 10 years I actually may buy Madden.

The only thing i ask for now is a full ESPN Monday Night Football presentation with pre-game warmups, halftime and postgame shows and a full ESPN Scoreboard with overlays, commentators and everything! if they do that, this can be the greatest nfl game ever created!

    • Hawks9700

And NFL Network Thursday night games with the overlays and commentary, later on in the season too. That would be a good compromise between the two.
