The latest Inside EA Blog posting goes over in detail the customization options in Madden 10. It actually goes as far as to include the actual game design document for the game settings screen. Within that some new details about the game can be found. Check out the entire posting here.

Having this kind of interaction with the community spelled it out EXTREMELY clearly – we really needed to focus in this area and make sure that we were allowing numerous customization options, especially the ones that had been requested for so many years by our community.

Accelerated clock is in, which is something that had hoped to be included in a DLC pack that never materialized for 09. No new camera angles though it remains possible the ActionCam has been tweaked from last year (hopefully). It also doesn’t appear that special teams has received any attention for 10 which is a disappointment as it remains ignored every year.

There is now a “Game Speed” setting with five different levels to choose from, a “Player Speed Differential” which will affect the range of speed between ratings, and “Coach Mode” which will see the CPU taking over control of the QB.

YES! Accelerated clock. I hate waiting the play clock for Manning and Brady to finally call hike. It was really annoying.

Any one see down there when it mentioned Stat Overlays, it says this:

"Minimal: All quarter and pregame banners will show (INCLUDING PRE GAME WARMUPS), but beyond that, the user will only see record-breaking stat banners".

Now am i reading too much into that? Or are we gonna get an on field pre game warm up type presentation the likes seen in NFL 2K5?

not as exciting as the past few weeks. I think due to them obviously still working on main features which could also mean they are struggling with them as they are not ready to announce anything "huge" as compared to previous weeks, theres nothing new here except maybe "pregame warmups" which is cool, but ive got a feeling they will not be as good as we would expect.

wow madden 10 is looking great. I would like to know more on Franchise mode. What is this pre-game warm up used for? Is there any use for it? I really like how the article went in deph on how to make a game. You have to give these developers credit they work very hard to make a superb game.

OMG. I totally noticed the pregame warmup “message” and you arent reading too much into this. I REALLLLY hope this has a pregame where QBs are throwing and handing the ball off. Notice that i didnt say “2K5 ish”. The reason is because madden 10 is going to be twice as good, and madden is going to FINALLY stomp 2k5 into the ground and spit on them, and then everyone will be able to shut the h3ll up about a game that came out in 2004.

I want to see players doing jumping jacks and down-ups….Cut scenes with guys on the sidelines saying hi to their moms…I want mud and a whole lot of it…I want snow to pile up and bodies to imprint when landing in it….I want snow angels, new kick meters and a cold beer…

  • Still Skeptical

how about customization in the edit player department. Can we edit ratings during franchise? can we edit builds, heights, tattoos?

Pasta, do you know if the score overlay is still the same as 09? It really annoyed me how it doesn't go away during gameplay (especially during field goals) because it kinda gets in the way of seeing the whole field. I like it being on the top of the screen instead of the bottom but they should make it smaller.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/pastapadre pastapadre

Sorry I don't know anything along those lines yet. If I get a chance to see it early I'll note it and suggest a change.

I agree. All the TV stations these have the rectangular stripe across the top or bottom so I'm not sure why they even put it there in the first place. Hopefully they use the one NCAA is using this year. That looks really nice.

Hey Pasta, I know this is a little off topic but I had to bring this up. Somebody wrote to ESPN's John Clayton and brought up a great idea for overtime in the NFL here it is

Q: The NFL's overtime rules seem to be unpopular. A possible solution to the overtime issue would be to have the pregame coin flip also count for the overtime period. Though some will still complain, at least the luck factor associated with the coin flip is avoided. A team trailing by one, knowing it will not get the ball back in overtime, could then go for the two-point conversion. If that occurs — success or failure — overtime is avoided.

    David in Bothell, Wash.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?colum

I just wanted to spread this idea as much as possible as it makes too much sense

    • HAL 9100

I don't like that idea at all. The pregame coin toss only determines who gets the ball first. Both teams get the opportunity to start a half with the ball and this would give a large advantage to the team who knows that they would get the ball in overtime. For a similar example to what you quoted, lets say that a team is trailing by 3 and is inside the 10 yard line with 30 seconds left and this team knows that they will be getting the ball in OT. Now, they have no real need to try for a touchdown. They can just play it safe and try some rushing plays in those 30 seconds and maybe get a TD, but no worry if they don't because they can just kick a field goal and immediately get the ball back to win in OT.

So yeah, the real key to this is that the team that wins the toss(I'm assuming the team that loses the toss would get the ball in OT…not that it makes a difference though) is not actually gaining an advantage. The only time this happens in the NFL is with the OT toss but, why penalize the team that won the pregame toss because they got the ball first? This would worse than the current system because it contains all the same faults but now lets you plan for OT which takes away from the sense that anything can happen and from the excitement of both regulation and OT.

Also, what if you're Marty Mornhinweg and don't want the ball in OT? lol

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/Mr_EA_Sports Mr_EA_Sports

To answer your 1st question about whether a coach would sit on the ball to get it back in OT, coaches do that anyway. If your down by 3 with 30 seconds left you run as many safe plays as you can in 20-22 seconds and while taking a few safe shots at the end zone in regulation and settle for the FG in need be. So what changes is that you can plan ahead of time for OT instead of waiting to see what happens with the OT coin toss. To answer your 2nd question no coach prepares for OT before the game so how can the coach get upset if win or lose the opening coin toss? Complaining about not receiving the ball for OT means to admit to worrying about playing for 60 minutes for a tie. Their were 512 games and 15 OT games for an average of 1 OT for every 34 games or 3% of all NFL games. What this idea does is allow a team to game plan late in the game as they know who will receive the ball 1st in OT. Also this requires little implication and strays away from gimmick OT ideas such as each team gets the ball or only TD's allowed etc.

    • Scott

OT is only unpopular with the fans. The players/coaches/owners don't want the rules changed.

Want the ball in OT? PLAY DEFENSE!!!

The ability to shut off the huge scoreboard at the top of the screen once you break the huddle would be great. Either that, or just a nice little condensed version of the scoreboard in the top right corner that shows score and time remaining

    • Josh

Exactly. I really hope they do something about that. It seems like the score overlay takes up the whole screen in 09. I want to appreciate graphics & the atmosphere not a huge scoreboard dead center in the middle of gameplay.

Ty, it's 2009. That makes it 5 years EA has had to catch up to 2K5. So far, no good. We will all be very happy if they eventually achieve it, but there has been no excuse for some of the piss-poor efforts we've seen over the recent years from EA.

See, even if EA did make the Best football game ever this year, people like you would still find a way to discredit them. Its like saying that if the Browns won a superbowl, THEY WON A SUPERBOWL, people like you would say that its been 30+ years since the last one, so its about time. who gives a crap they would have won a Superbowl. Like all the slogans say. Believe In NOW. dont live in the past

    • Groundhog

Wrong. Everybody wants to play a great football game. Madden has taken steps backwards from where it was at 5 years ago. It's still missing features that were in 2004. There's no excuse for that. It has seemed over the past year that EA have actually been TRYING to improve both Madden and NBA Live. I hope they are successful, but history is not on their side.

I'm digging the injury slider, but the common issue with a "slider" for injuries is going to be that increasing the slider will lead to far to many significant injuries. If I'm playing with 15 min. quarters (which I should be able to do with accelerated clock), then there should be 5-10 injuries a game that might only result in a player being "shaken" up and having to leave for a play or a series. I seem to remember dealing with an injury slider in the previous gen of Madden (I think) and it led to far too many significant injuries. You would lose 5-10 players a game for 3 or more weeks. The obvious issue with that, is the fact that the IR is broken.

Exactly… there's no luck involved with OT. If the other team gets the ball and scores on your defense and wins the game there's no luck in that, you just didn't play good defense. The rules right now are fine, defenses stop offenses all the time in the NFL. They should be able to stop them when it COUNTS, and if they can't then they deserve to loose the game (not bad luck)

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/Skihawks Skihawks
