MLB 2K9 Patch Now Out

Last year 2K Sports released a patch for MLB 2K8 that wasn’t especially effective, and at that didn’t even bother to put it out for the PS3. Fortunately this year 2K decided to provide both the 360 and PS3 with a patch that attempts to improve on some of the problem areas in MLB 2K9. It is now out for both systems and the game will prompt you to download it when starting it up.

Areas of focus in the patch include the toning down of CPU batting aggressiveness as well as the frequency of home runs. Fixing of the first baseman glitch, outfield error glitches, and ease of pick-offs at second base are also apparently addressed.

Reaction so far seems to be mixed. That doesn’t surprise me either because there is certainly a feeling of resentment out there for what was initially provided with the release of 2K9. It is difficult to praise a patch after having been mislead on several fronts and with the original game being so egregiously bad.

Leave your thoughts on the patch in the comments. How much has or hasn’t this improved the game? Does it change your perception of 2K9 at all now post-patch?

The reactions haven't been mixed. The patch makes the game a lot better! It runs a lot smoother, fixes the aggressiveness and 1B glitch like you mentioned. Outfielders run a LOT smoother too and get to balls. Only additional thing that I wish would have been fixed is ability to edit batting stances and etc. Otherwise, this patch alone makes 2k9 a better game! Don't listen to all the other hate posts.

Yea, i mean the patch did fix a lot of the nagging issues, but the thing is 2k should have addressed these issues before the release date. the game is finally more fun to play and feels smoother, but they have a long way to go to make mlb 2k10 better

only one good comment on here, on the 2k site and other post forums it an equal discussion, at least say what is wrong post patch. Maybe someone one from the company will listen. If I was VC I wouldn''t listen to a bash session if it wasn't constructive. It feels like Madden all over again and most will go out and buy Madden 10 and will start this all over again. Its not perfect but its playable consensus says that for sure. But what game is perfect??

For PS3 owners yes, but not for 360, so they are King of PS3.

The game is definitely more playable and the AI is slightly less aggressive. But no attention was paid to Franchise mode with this patch and most players (myself included) spend most of their time in this game mode.

There's a list of glitches/bugs/issues with Franchise mode posted on 2K's forums of things that shouldn't even be a problem (the Top 100 Prospect list not being populated or being populated with non-prospects like Juan Encarnacion, off days do not increase players' stamina, players get stuck at having a 1-day injury and you have to send them to the minors for them to heal, etc.).

I am glad that VC is interested in patching the game ASAP. But I wish most of these obvious problems would never have even made it into the finished retail copy, thus requiring a patch in the first place.

The Show is not on 360 so I dont think they are going that far. Its good to have competition, it makes you work harder would you like things to be like madden where its the only choice. 2k makes Sony stay on their toes to bet the best.

jon wake up! 2k baseball is horrible and I had to get a playstation 3 just to play a good baseball game! If the show was on 360 I'd be the first inline to get it and i would be up 300 bucks!

  • 2k9 is awful

The patch did nothing. This game is such a joke. I gave it 3 games after the patch on different levels and then put the thing on eBay. Following a 10-9 35 hit game between the Mets and Red Sox was enough for me. I cannot believe I got suckered into dropping $60 for a 2k MLB game (again). Astounding they put this game out assuming the reaction would be good.

I've never seen so many haters in one place in my life. I play both The Show and MLB 2K9 and they both are good games for different reasons.____It's funny how there are all these complaints about the 1st baseman glitch, outfielders dropping the ball, too many Home Runs, pickoffs at second base. ____In about 30 + games I've seen the 1st baseman glitch twice, one dropped ball, no successful pickoffs and a handful (about 5-7) homeruns between myself and the AI. On top of that I routinely get 6 innings out of my starting pitchers with 4-6 K's and a couple of walks. I seriously question thepitching skills of many, which is why I typically don't play online for either game.____As much as I like The Show as well, for anyone that remotely enjoys the gameplay of 2K9 too has no business coming to this site…go to the forums on OperationSports. Alot more rational discussion without the ranting and fanaticism of one game over another.

guys named 2k9 is awful are liars. You can tell who got the update and who are just assholes. And like I stated before weeks ago. More people play MLB 2k9 on xbox 360, than MLB 2k9 and the Show on PS3. The patch fixed the CPU aggresiveness. Nuff said. Too many losers come here to diss 2k. In the last weeks, you've had some lame articles and pro EA articles and had NO responses. Put up a 2k article and the haters show up. Its opening day, today, no three weeks ago. The season started today, right? And you all are already finished with baseball, dickheads.

I think you pretty much said it all Pasta. It's just classless to put out a product like that and then a month later release a patch that may or may not partially fix some of the huge list of problems.

Though I don't see how it would matter anyway because I'm not sure how many people that somehow bought the game haven't traded it in yet.

Man, I just can't get over what a waste this game is when these guys can't get their act together.

Yeah, I mean imagine when you bought a movie and you dint like then ending and the movie studio took a whole month to send you a new ending for free… oh wait.. they dont ever do that, right? Well, okay, thne how about a CD that only has a few good songs on it and the music label takes forever to give you a few free tracks later to make up for it… oh that doesnt happen either? Hmmm… Books? No. Food? Maybe but probably not.

Point is, that we are fans of one of the best industries in the business world. Becasue of this, we are so spoiled that a lot of people believe that if they dont get what, how and when the want something to the exact T, then the company is a crook, a scammer or in this case… classless.

I am a baseball hardcore sim fan and while the game has HUGE setbacks, I in no way feel cheated. Disappointed? Yes. Let down? Yes. But do I feel like anything was done wrong? Ha! I would love to see the image that you have of these developers secretly huddled around a big table trying to figure out exactly how shitty they can make a game while still charging for it, meanwhile Elvis and Bigfoot are playing cards at another table.

All I am trying to say is that just because a game fails… and then fails at trying to fix it… that DOES NOT mean they are personally trying to screw you.

You're exactly right. When movies or music producers screw up, they don't send out a new product a month later because they'd basically be admitting to everyone that it's bad in the first place, and it would be pretty embarrassing. So to treat this as a gift rather than just plain wrong is kind of weird if you ask me. Now, I don't mind it if a company releases a decent game and then is honest about it's mistakes so they release a patch. But in this case the game was so bad in the first place that it just doesn't seem right.

Also, the image I have of developers is a very respectful one. I never attacked them personally, I just said it was a waste because I know these guys work hard and have the potential to make a good game. They certainly have the resources with Visual Concepts now working on it, so I actually predict it'll get better sooner rather than later.

Until that happens though, It doesn't feel right when a game like that is put out there and it doesn't even work the right way until a patch is released a month later. Enough said.

I would love to see the image that you have of these developers secretly huddled around a big table trying to figure out exactly how shitty they can make a game while still charging for it, meanwhile Elvis and Bigfoot are playing cards at another table.

All I am trying to say is that just because a game fails… and then fails at trying to fix it… that DOES NOT mean they are personally trying to screw you.

this is the year 2009 not 1979. there is no reason in this day and age that you should put out a game with soo many problems. and basic problems at that!. if they arent trying to screw us they acertainly dont care about the consumer cause they have no reason for such a crap game with lots of problems!

I bought the game with optimism the day of release. The game stayed in my collection until 2 days after release.

I think people were looking for the "magic pill" with this patch to completely fix everything so they can work the corners and get 15-16 K's a game to pad stats. My general feeling is that the game is certainly playable now, and if it was released like this from jump street, most who purchased would be generally satisfied.

The problem is that people bought a game that had 5 or 6 glaring problems, so they already feel cheated. Even when the patch is out that fixes those problems, some people can't get over that cheated feeling, and feel the need to toss the "this game sucks!" moniker out there.

I enjoy the game. I think I might get 3 games in a week with my schedule between work and the family, but I enjoy playing it.

when you buy a new car and it has 5 or 6 dents in it wouldnt you feel cheated also???? Thats how we feel about the game. Ok some games can be bad but these kind of mistakes are not right.

i think the patched helped a little. it didn't totally fix the problems, but like people have said in other posts – the game is much more playable. i don't play much of 2k9 because i do own the show and i do believe it blows mlb 2k9 outta the water, but i'm not going to hate on 2k. i played two games with the new patch and noticed homeruns went down. there was a few times where i know i made good contact that before would have been homeruns and this time they weren't. the errors were still there, but not as blatant. i still had like 3 or 4 each game, but they weren't the stupid kind where my guy was sitting on the yellow X thing and it bounces off of him. they were believable errors where guys had to make tougher plays and booted them…understandable. i actually like errors a little, it does make games a little more realistic. people boot balls in the field. if there were no errors in the game i'd be even more unhappy. all we can do is hope that 2k improves each year (maybe learning some lessons from the show), or they give up the mlb contract and perhaps EA and other companies come back for some needed competition.

Gameplay is much improved, but the inability to edit players and the wacked out franchise mode still makes this game a loser in my book

  • 2k9 is awful

That might be one of the most incoherent paragraphs ever written. For those of us who haven't 'smoked 4 dayz', please translate what you are saying.

The patch actually did not fix CPU aggressiveness, it nudged it in the right direction but comes nowhere near where it should be for a realistic baseball game. Try reading the reviews on 2K's Forum, roughly 85% of them are still complaining about this game post patch. Yet those people are "haters" and not "reviewers"? Anything else to add to your stellar review Cheech?

Can we please get an Exhibition mode? This is ridiculous. I also want to be able to edit batting stances and pitching styles. And please explain why they have Jose Veras's face but not Joba's. Again, ridiculous.
