Today a new article on the Inside EA Blog focuses on the addition of Adaptive AI. This is something that will be seen in both Madden 10 and NCAA Football 10. This is certainly something that has been long overdue and will hopefully lead to a more realistic simulation whether that be offline or online. You can check out the full posting here.

First and foremost, we hope that our Adaptive AI will add a ton of replay value to our games this year by forcing you as a gamer to continue to mix up the way you play to have success. Football is a very complex game of chess – and this is a great first step towards re-creating that. Secondly, we hope this feature will continue to show our commitment at the Tiburon studio to creating a realistic simulation of football, as it exists in both NCAA Football 10 and Madden NFL 10.

Similar to a few weeks ago for NCAA the Madden 10 Community Event is taking place today. No new details are expected to come out of that from the attendees immediately however again it is a great opportunity for the community to impact the game given it’s still early enough in the development cycle to do so.

Wow finally. In previous years you could just smash the ball up the middle with a good RB and the defense would never adapt to that. It will be cool to see the defense stack the line after you get a few 1st downs running the ball and then play action for a big throw down field.

I think they had a little bit of this in the last game when I would call an audible and the defense would automatically know what it was. As long as they take that away and put it to good use, this sounds like yet another good improvement for this year.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/Mr_EA_Sports Mr_EA_Sports

I know what you are referring to when you talk about the CPU adjusting on an audible. I see the CPU stack the defense in when I audible to a run without any movement and then when I audible to a pass again without any movement the CPU spreads out their defense

      • Dre

Thats not adapting thats the cpu reading your plays knowing what play you are calling. The cpu cant know what I'm doing if I call for an audible to pass but still in my same run formation and they change for a pass. Thats not adaption that just lazyiness by the developers

        • http://intensedebate.com/people/Mr_EA_Sports Mr_EA_Sports

yeah sorry I really didn't write that last comment all that well. I was just agreeing with the CPU adapting. But to know exactly when to put 9 in the box and then back off in your audible cadence is kind of cheating

        • http://intensedebate.com/people/Sidewinder Sidewinder

I know, but I'm saying that we know it's possible to put that kind of technology in the game and put it there for the right use. It means that the AI has some way of playing to your style.

MORE FLUFF?? WHAT ABOUT DEVELOPING THE GAME FOR THE PS3?? why does madden on the ps3 look like it should be played on the ps2??

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/Mr_EA_Sports Mr_EA_Sports

I disagree the last Madden had surprisingly good graphics. If you don't believe me then pop in a PS2 version of Madden in 1080p HD and see for yourself how much of difference there is.

I hope they address the A.I. in blocking as I have seen DE's literally walk around the offensive tackles for for a clear shot a the QB. Adaptive A.I. shouldn't mean the defense can not be blocked it should just mean that they are more aware of your play calling

I want to know how they are fixing QB Sneaks.. lots of people getting automatic 1st downs on 4th and 1 by the cheap qb sneak.

I think they need to do away with the smart QB or smart defenses or lessen their knowledge to just a few players (meaning just LB's or DB). It doesn't make any sense that if you call a play that the defense has never seen before all game and they know the exact route/run and block of every single player on the field is crazy. I can somewhat understand it if you ran the play several times but to never run a play and have it displayed just doesn't make much sense.

    • Dre

True, what about the screen plays being broken as well. I could go the entire game without running one and as soon as you do the cpu knows exactly what you are doing and follows your player to the designed are. It worked fine for the demo even though it was also somewhat broken but @ least you were able to pull it off.

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/Mr_EA_Sports Mr_EA_Sports

I never had a problem with the screen play being stopped in fact I have had the opposite effect. When I play franchise I never run the screen as it is an automatic TD or at least a 1st down. Maybe you are waiting too late when you throw it or throw it to the right side (the left is the best side to throw the screen to)

        • Dre

Yea it's mostly to the right but the DE or LB follows my RB as soon as he start out the backfield

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/Skihawks Skihawks

I wish that they would do away with weapons. That is what the ratings are for.

But if u call just one play that is usually dominant, then it automatically gets stopped???? What about. 65 Toss Power Trap that was run by the Kansas City Chiefs back in the day, it was unstoppable. There has got to be at least ONE play or run or rouye combo that, if u run it 10 times a game, gains like 5 yards every time, depending on the players, of course. And what if I run a play the firstplay of the game, and then the same play in the 2 quarter, and then im down by 7 points, at the opponents 10, and i run the play, is it gonna get picked automatically.

    • Dre

Last game I remember having money plays like that was GameDay I think and I had a Hail Mary play from Young to Rice that he always caught

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/floridagatorfan floridagatorfan

In an interview they had with Ian Cummings on this he stated that mixing up your play calls would keep the AI from picking up the play. As an example he used the Colts and how they basically run stretch plays all game but they mix up the formations. So it sounds like if you mix it up at all the AI wont jump the play after the third time in a game, instead it will be for people who are abusing a play or route over and over each play.
I would recommend going to the easportsblog and listening to the interview with Ian Cummings as he goes in depth on this feature.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/Skihawks Skihawks

I don't believe that is the situation. However, if you have a tendency to run on 2nd and long (instead of passing), then the defense will look run first, etc. However if you run the same play over and over out of the same formation, any NFL team will adjust so having success over and over is a tad unrealistic.

I do agree that the adaptive AI can't be one that cheats. Nothing drove me more crazy is when the defense would stack the line of scrimmage then as I audible to a pass, it would go into pass coverage. THEN, calling a second audible back to a run and watch the defense stack the line again.

I also would like to see the defense mask coverages better. If it is man-to-man coverage, in past versions you could send a man in motion and see a corner move with the receiver which would expose the coverage. I would like to see man-to-man in which you send a guy in motion and the defense shows zone but a different player picks up the motion man.

      • http://www.intensedebate.com/people/Mr_EA_Sports Mr_EA_Sports

Sounds like you know football Skihawks with your mentioning of the man to man masked coverages

      • Guru

That would force us to actually progress from our No.1 receivers to our No.2's and such……it'd be extremely difficult, but more realistic. However, in doing wat u say they should, there needs to be an increase in pass blocking awareness.

They can fix it by making it a true QB sneak. You don't hike the ball stand straight up find a gap and bust through 5 tackles for 5 yards. All they have to do is make the QB stance lower and force him to drive behind his center

do you think that this will affect substitutions? like the cpu subbing in bigger DEs if you keep running or moving DEs inside to DT if you keep passing? also, do you know if substitution sliders will work this year?

Without reading the article, I am taking that the adaptive AI is something in which the game will read your tendencies like the old school computer games when I was a kid. If this is the case, it should keep the game fresh and make each opponent a little more prepared for the gamer's style of play, such as "knowing" audible tendencies in certain situations.

Again, if this is what EA means by adaptive AI, I also hope that the game allows you to view your tendencies (can't remember if this was part of the game or not) such as play call types by down and yardage and what audibles you most frequently call. This will help the gamer identify their own tendencies which will create awareness for better preparation….

If you are playing shouldnt you already know what you do the most and like to do?? I can call you ten plays off the top of my head that i use in madden consistently. what i want is the computer to figure out how to stop these plays

i'd been waiting to hear this from madden for the longest time………..IMO, this is the best news by far compared with franchise modes and the like. It would be an icing on the cake if they mentioned about Team AI tendencies so that when you play them, those teams would resemble the play styles of their real-life counterparts.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/kcxiv kcxiv

      • fooballgamer

i mean….its the best news because this is an area that effects the longevity and enjoyment of the game…….a game when you actually play on the field. If you strip down all the features and modes of this game, you are basically left with the exhibition/play-now game……..bare bones………and this is what the game boils down to…….playing on the field! yes, this was a feature pushed last years but for this years version……its a long wait…………plus they didn't explained in detail about that feature for last years.

Oh and I think this along with the other upgrades are nice additions and hope to hear more info soon.

I have a great idea to use this system to help people during the game. Use this adaptive system in combination with the "Ask Madden" feature. Also add down and distance stats to it, so when we ask madden, he will give us true plays that would work according to our opponents playing style.

This would bring more madden integration back to the game, as most people feel that madden has been fazed out more and more over the years. When you "ask madden", he would say something like…

"your opponent has been blitzing on 3rd downs, make sure to get the ball out quick, maybe try a screen pass." Then you would get a selection of plays to counter blitzes for the distance you need.

You could turn this into a great learning tool to help people really learn the in's and out's of football. Anyway, great job EA, on what has the potential to be the greatest football experience to date!

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/Sidewinder Sidewinder

Hey, if it helps cut down on the number of people that use one or two plays for the whole entire game, I'm right there with you. The "ask madden" idea sounds good too, but it might require John to actually work on more lines, which might be too much physical activity.

Exactly. I think EA thought they could say they were better graphics just because they changed the style. I think I liked NCAA Football's graphics a lot better last year.

Definitely a great feature, IT will stop those cheesers that use the same plays over and over and over and over, now your gonna actually have to have skill and not just know how to dumb down the AI to put up points, another thing that made me smile is how they said its gonna be used for head to head online play too :) WOW keep up the good work, i just hope this is done 100 percent correctly

Ummmm Am I the only one not falling for this?

It says it on Madden 09's box, it was on the commercials, websites, etc.

"First Sport Game that Adapts To You"

"Whether your new to the franchise or an All-Pro, the all new adapative difficulty engine continously assessses your abilities and tailors the experience to fit your skill level, keeping the game both fun and challenging"

I smell some b.s. going flying around here.

Naw, your not the only one. I will wait for impressions from people i trust. I fell for it last year, isnt that what the whole point of one of their features was, so the game can adapt to how you play, now for the 2nd year in a row they are saying the same thing as if its something new?

They were talking about your Madden IQ, (sliding skill levels), on 09. That is not the same thing as adaptive AI. Madden IQ looks at your success in certain areas of the game, (running/passing offense/defense), and tries to compensate the skill levels of these areas so that games are competitive based on your individual skill level in these areas. Adaptive AI picks out tendancies and adjusts play calling to compensate so that you can't do the same thing over and over again, forcing you to play "honest football".
