March Sales: The Show Soars While 2K Sinks

by pastapadre
Posted April 16th, 2009 at 3:45 pm

This generation has generally shown that despite increased user base sports games don’t see significant growth in sales year over year. They remain relatively stagnant seeing only small increases. NPD just released sales numbers for March and the two baseball titles have blown that pattern out of the water. MLB 09 The Show (PS3) saw huge growth while MLB 2K9 (360) actually dropped when compared their 2008 versions.

Last year March sales of MLB 08 The Show didn’t make the top 10 so a specific number wasn’t available. We do know that it sold under 224,000 copies though from that data. MLB 09 The Show came in with 305,000 putting it in 6th place. That means at the very least The Show saw an increase of 37% and it is probably a little higher even. That is an extraordinary jump.

Meanwhile on the 360 side MLB 2K9 sold 205,000. In comparison MLB 2K8 sold 237,100. Despite a continually growing user base on the 360 2K9 sales fell by 14% compared to the year before. It isn’t a mystery why.

This is where poor word of mouth really starts to show itself, that being in the following year. 2K8 had the severe framerate problems, unplayable online, and poor customer service. Given the reaction to 2K9 prospects for 2K10 are even more troubling.

Considering the user base of both consoles its surprising, even with the disparity in quality, that the PS3 exclusive would beat the 360 exclusive. There was a lot of talk about Killzone 2 being the big PS3 offering that would change the landscape of the console sales. Not only did that not materialize, but The Show outsold Killzone 2 in March.

So here we have examples for devs to take notice of. Produce an offering that is of exceptional quality and engage the community and that will be reflected in the sales. Produce an overwhelmingly poor effort plagued with glitches and ignore and mistreat the community then even with an exclusive consumers will take their money elsewhere.

That was the same post I was going to make. I am glad to be part of the 14% decrease in sales. Hopefully more people will follow suit next year. Don't just buy a game for 65 bucks because you are used to it. These people need to stop stealing from gamers and using us as tools for their massive Pepsi and Statefarm ads in their games.

This is where having one NFL game, one NCAA football game, and now one NCAA B-ball game really hurts us, the consumers.

This is a great example of how competition can be a great thing for us gamers. Even though MLB 2k9 sucks, it was reflected in the bad sales for 2K and in the great sales for SCEA. Madden can suck and still kick ass sales wise because it is the only game in town so to speak.

Now, the people behind Madden really seem to be listening to the community more and more, asking for our input. Hopefully this results in one of the best NFL sims ever come this August. I just think had there been another NFL game out there for the last 4 years, maybe it wouldn't have taken so long.

It's ultimately up to us as consumers to hit game makers where it counts, the pocket book. Great sales or lack of sales speak stronger than any review or feedback ever will. That is why I am ecstatic that MLB 2K got hit in the nuts sales wise because it might, and I say might, light a fire under them to make a better game in the future.

Yea maybe it wouldn't have taken as long but we have the development team now that cares and the interaction with them that seems to be so crucial.

Thing is that I don't think the 14+% went out and bought a PS3 and The Show. Maybe some did but most probably just didn't play a baseball game this year. Goes to show just how bad the game was and that there is a limit to how much they can shaft us before people respond.

who told you MLB 2k9 sucks? and how is buying a baseball game 205,000 times a disappointment. PS3 owners HAVE NO GAMES TO BUY, SO WHEN THE MEDIA TELLS THEM WHAT TO GET FOR THEIR DUSTY SYSTEM THEY ALL GO BUY IT. SO HAVING 85,0000 LEAD OVER THE COMPETITION ISNT MUCH WHEN THE COMPETITION IS ON THE SAME SYSTEM TOO.

Pasta is a EA suck boy, and he's burned that EA has no relevance is all american apple pie sports video game, so he picks anything vs. 2K, this time he got lucky, the show is a nice, safe, generic game of baseball, nothing innovative. He hates that 2K tries new control, new animations, he loves/hates them. Stop falling for his half truths and assuming everything he says.

About the sales of games…many and I mean many people these days don't buy games, and they still have the game…many people, so sales don't mean a game is not being played…lol

And finally, Pasta Plays MLB2K9 more than he plays the show…ask him, he won't lie to you. ask him.

Personally, I think competition amongst game developers is a great thing. That being said, I like both games. Visually, The Show has 2K9 beat. The uniforms, accessory options, lighting, and little extras are all top notch. I'm not a big fan of the player models in The Show (shoulders are too wide and players seem "over-buffed". But the game is still leaps and bounds over 2K9 in visuals.

But just overall fun and playability I still like 2K9. It's hard for me to go back to "button-ball". If they wouldn't have removed alot of the player-editing capability, I'd rate 2K9 pretty high.

I think VC will do good by the 2K9 franchise.

As for Madden, previous to Madden '09, the three previous versions were larceny. I still feel violated for getting a half-@ssed product. Nothing is worse than that first five minutes you spend with a game that you had high hopes for only to realize it's an utter disappointment. That's pretty much been Madden on next-gen. Lets hope that changes this season as it's looking promising.

Well no sports game is truly great because they intentionally leave out things to add to the next season.

The truth is that by supporting The Show and Madden you create a monopoly by those franchises to weed out the real innovators. Look at how GameDay pushed Madden in the late 90's and how NFL 2K delivered what Madden has yet to fulfill which is true presentation. As soon as NFL 2K was picking up speed EA went behind their back and signed a punk deal with the NFL only because Madden(the man) was so popular. Even the new GameBreaker's engine is innovative. But supporting blindly for The Show and Madden just give them more reason not to change anything. Once they get their 99% share of the market they will go back to roster updates for $65. oh and you have to account for inflation so in 5 years it will be about 70-75 bucks.

Why should The Show continue to push itself? Because if anything these sales prove that the companies have to answer to the consumers. Ultimately if consumers determined that The Show was stagnant and not advancing itself they would stop buying it (at the very least it wouldn't be seeing growth which is necessary considering the growing costs of development)

Why? Because that's what business's do, they get you hooked, eliminate the competitors, then charge you premium for a water downed product. That is capitalism at it's best. Madden had the exclusive license for over 5 years now with ESPN and what did they do with it? Nothing! There is no pressure for them to do something as they made more money then they know what to do with it. It's the biggest money making game EVER!

They make over a billion each year from game sales alone, not even including sponsors-you know that $5 foot long SubWay ad that pops up on your game winning drive. They only recently opened up suggestions by the consumer because that license agreement they have with the NFL is about to run out. Once they sign a new agreement they will go back to roster updates every year for $65 bucks (add $5-10 bucks for inflation)

So quality doesn't always factor in ahead of just being greedy. I've always said it's amazing the complexity if Call of Duty (not without it's glitches) but EA can't figure out how to produce a realistic NBA experience. I think these companies realize a majority of gamers are like junkies looking for that next high. The same junkie that'll buy a game for $60 then take that same game back to his dealer in exchange for a $10-$15 credit towards his next fix. Only to have that same dealer resale that same fix to another junk for $5 less it's original value. So you see, quality doesn't have to be at the forefront when you have a community of crack heads!

Coming soon, The Bigs 2 article and how its so glitchy and sux LOL. This is from the same guy that pumped: Facebreaker/NFL TOUR (prob the worst game ever)/Boom Blox… Come to think of it, he said Boom Blox was more anticipated than GTA 4 LOL. He is a funny dude, I come on here to see abt NCAA 2010 updates because that is the best game by EA. Now, lets talk abt that crappy Godfather 2 lol… or not

I’ve been more excited in general with gaming over the past days than I have in a long time. First came GTA IV but that was even topped by Boom Blox. Lego Indiana Jones is coming in a few weeks. Now news that Viva Pinata 2 is on the way. The original VP along with Crackdown are my two favorite games of this generation.

Excuse me… you said topped (?)

No site supported The BIGS more than I did here and I'm excited for the sequel. Yeah I'll write about the game whether its good or bad. If they do well with it then I'll fully support it once again. If its an MLB Front Office Manager then I'll rip it and justifiably so.

I said Facebreaker was the worst game I played last year. I did like NFL Tour a lot. I never said Boom Blox was more anticipated than GTA, thats outrageous lol. But thanks for chiming in :)

really why does everyone insist on bashing pasta on HIS OWN WEBSITE… key words his own, if you dont like his opinion dont come to this site. Even if he seems "biased" its still his site, just do what I do… ignore it (because its one persons opinion) and go to operationsports and hit up the forums there.

I think one thing that should not be overlooked is that these are baseball games. Historically, baseball games typically aren't hot sellers especially simulations. I think a lot has to do with the improved gameplay and realistic stats.

I am shocked that The Show outsold Killzone 2. Man, after all of the hype KZ2 was founded on it must be a punch in the gut for the Sony elite. I own Killzone 2, which is a beautiful game with so-so multiplayer (definitely NOT Call of Duty 4)….

I have bought both for the past 2 years. 2k and the Show. THE SHOW wins hands down for my franchise mode. However, 2k online play is much better imo. Free of lag and you can tell the difference between balls and strikes. HOwever, if you throw too many strikes in 2k or catch too much of the plate, your gonna get punished unless you keep em off balance.

He just does it at random when we all know he doesn't like it. He loves the Show more than John Madden loves Brett Favre……

Of course he does and for good reason. The Show is a sim and 2k9 is an arcade game for the kiddies who dont know baseball. It is apples and hippos. No comparisons needed anymore. Game over for 2K for this baseball year.

Once they sign a new agreement they will go back to roster updates every year for $65 bucks (add $5-10 bucks for inflation)

    and you know this Pasta

ok this is what operationsports is saying about mlb2k9. First they have it rated at 6.5 BOB! "Make no mistake about it, the graphics aren't bad at all. They just aren't spectacular." "Overall, I was pretty disappointed with this offering from 2K Sports, especially when I consider where the franchise probably should be at this point in the life-cycle." "On the Field: Too much offense, too many swings that make contact and some wonky outfield A.I. and movement hurt the on-the-field experience."

Meanwhile these companies have broken promises and Pasta points those out. And before you say hes biased hes done it with EA games on numerous occasions. Its not his fault that they put out the most games and they tend to be better than 2Ks.

I literally god rid of my XBOX 360 and bought a PS3 for this game. (the 08' version) I couldn't have been happier. The Show is one of the best, and most realistic, sports games I've ever played. It was worth dumping the xbox for it. 2K is going downhill… it's a shame.

Now if only Sony could get a piece of the NFL pie…then we'd be in business! EA and their NFL sim monopoly have slowly taken the sizzle out of the Madden Franchise… I think they're hopefully getting closer though…I think they should start thinking about using the physics engine I'm seeing in all these FNR4 videos… that would be a start in the right direction.

I wouldn't trust a word Pasta says as far as Baseball games go Seems very very Bias against 2K sports even though the only thing good they make is NBA 2K9 but hence all this 2K Bashing I wouldn't doubt if Pasta dislikes it as well (Probably in love with Live 09 which is a 2009 version of NBA JAMZ IMO) So Pasta hopefully you read this I'm not defending MLB 2K9 game probably is garbage but please don't ride the EA Sports sinister Bandwagon and bash 2K All DAY cause when you do EA devs apparently don't give a fuck about the game and also I know MLB 09 the show is made by Sony so not intended to argue against it or for it thanks for your time

This site will not be a place that just copies and pastes press releases and buys into everything the companies say. I like them to prove it, and if they don't they I go ahead and point that out. Whether it be 2K, EA, SCEA, Midway, ect. When they deliver on their advertised features, and I find the game to be fun, I support it regardless of who made it.

Bob a monopoly?? come on man. I too would like some competition for madden and ncaa but lets talk about the baseball game right now. First there is no monopoly right now cause the obvious 2k has a game. And what has 2k done…..absolutely nothing! And it shows in the sells numbers. Now Bob im sure that all those 300,000 something people who bought the show dont read pasta's website. It doesnt take a genius here to figure out a good baseball game when you play one. Who wants to buy a game and wait for who knows how long for a patch to fix some of the most basic things of a game! Shame on 2k for not listening to the consumer, all of there work is done in secret and dont blame a pasta when mlb themselves pull the plug on 2k cause they have been doing nothing to improve on the game! And I cant stand when somebody says the game has been prettied up. its suppose to be. Nothing is wrong with the mechanics of the game so why start tweaking somethings and loose your base that obviously is increasing! the same for 2k basketball it has been the same and nothing much has really changed but why mess with it if its still the best other than give it a few make over's here and there to keep up.
