With the first day of the NFL Draft complete its time to take a look at the actions each team took and what that will mean for them in Madden 10 and beyond. Having the official player ratings for the rookies provides the opportunity to evaluate the immediate impact and future prospects based on their respective teams and situations.

Continue on to see the eight biggest “winners and losers” of the Madden Draft and leave your thoughts in the comments.

Winners

Philadelphia Eagles: WR Jeremy Maclin (79), RB LeSean McCoy (75)
The Eagles come away with two dynamic exciting players. Maclin combined with DeSean Jackson now means defenses have to worry about covering deep on both receivers. Along with Brian Westbrook and Leonard Weaver they add McCoy to a backfield that can all catch and explode for big plays. You can also include the recent addition of Jason Peters when considering what the Eagles have done with their first day.

Seattle Seahawks: OLB Aaron Curry (85), OL Max Unger (75), Broncos 2010 1st round pick
The Seahawks get the highest rated rookie in Madden 10 with Curry. Max Unger provides versatility on the offensive line as he can play any position. The big surprise was obtaining the Broncos first round pick next year which could be very high while still getting the two players they wanted in the first two rounds.

Washington Redskins: OLB/DE Brian Orakpo (82)
It seemed unlikely that Brian Orakpo would fall to the Redskins but he did. He gives them the pass rusher they desperately needed. He’ll have the chance to put up gaudy numbers which means attention when it comes to roster updates.

San Francisco 49ers: WR Michael Crabtree (84), Panthers 2010 1st round pick
Like Seattle the 49ers come away with an impact player in Michael Crabtree and a first round pick next year from the Panthers. They couldn’t draft to improve their pass rush or offensive line in the second round though because of that trade.

Atlanta Falcons: DT Peria Jerry (78), S William Moore (76)
Jerry is the second highest rated DT which is a position they’ve been looking to upgrade since last off-season. Moore was a good value late in the second round. To go along with the acquisition of Tony Gonzalez they have now addressed their most pressing areas of need.

Denver Broncos: RB Knowshon Moreno (81), OLB Robert Ayers (78), CB Alphonso Smith (77), CB Darcel McBath (69), TE Richard Quinn (74)
Unfortunately for the Broncos they gave up their first rounder next year to acquire Smith but they have obtained a bunch of players that can contribute in the game. Moreno is the dynamic RB that they didn’t have. Still they are going to be mediocre at best with Kyle Orton and not having upgraded their defensive line.

Miami Dolphins: CB Vontae Davis (78), QB/WR Pat White (61), CB Sean Smith (75)
The Dolphins grabbed two good cover corners which is an important position in Madden since they are rarely user controlled. Smith specifically is intriguing cause of his height. Pat White may have a low rating but used creatively he offers another offensive weapon to the team.

Cincinnati Bengals: OT Andre Smith (79), ILB Ray Maualuga (80)
Despite the concerns over Smith he remains a highly rated rookie and the Bengals needed the help badly on the offensive line. Maualuga slipped providing an 80 rated player in the second round which was a steal.

Losers

Oakland Raiders: WR Darrius Heyward-Bey (76), S Michael Mitchell (not yet rated – probably will fall in the low 50s)
The Raiders are the laughingstock of the league once again after taking Heyward-Bey as the first WR about 20 picks higher than anyone anticipated him going. Then they go and draft a guy who was the 73rd rated safety by Mel Kiper, neither ESPN nor NFL Network had any highlights or info on him, and was not in the pool of rookies that had been created for Madden 10.

New York Jets: QB Mark Sanchez (77)
I’m a big believer in Mark Sanchez however going to the Jets he may get rushed onto the field before he’s ready. He doesn’t have the college experience of Matt Ryan or Joe Flacco nor did he get to sit like fellow USC alum Matt Cassel. So either Sanchez goes out and struggles early or he sits and doesn’t provide much value in Madden.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: QB Josh Freeman (72)
Similar to Sanchez you have Josh Freeman who isn’t ready to start. He’ll either sit and offer little value or he’ll start and probably struggle meaning people would be stuck with a 72 or so rated QB which is not a good situation in Madden.

Pittsburgh Steelers: DT Evander Hood (74)
The Steelers really needed help on the offensive line and in the secondary. It was thought that they would go and pick one or both with their first two picks. Instead they took a defensive tackle, who while he may be pretty good isn’t going to improve the team in Madden. Then they traded away their second rounder.

Kansas City Chiefs: DE Tyson Jackson (77)
A 3-4 defensive end is not going to add much in Madden. They would’ve been much better off trading down or taking Aaron Curry. With no other picks to supplement that one at least they have their QB in Matt Cassel.

San Diego Chargers: OLB Larry English (75)
There were much higher rated OLB’s on the board. With a position that is already strong in Madden the Chargers could’ve gone elsewhere for a pick that would’ve made a difference this year.

Dallas Cowboys: No picks
The Cowboys are paying for the Roy Williams trade. Then they traded out of the second round. No picks means no help.

Chicago Bears: No picks
The Bears are paying for the Jay Cutler trade. Then they traded out of the second round. No picks means no help. Can’t be too disappointed though now that they finally have their franchise QB.

Yeah I thought they did a good job filling needs. I like Maybin. I had them on my initial winners list they just didnt make the final cut.

Ya they did pretty good and all but, they need a new LT to help out there young QB.

Huge Request for Madden 10 can you try and make it if it sounds good. In every Madden, you are not allowed to have more than 10 picks. I would like to be able to get more picks. Also, let us be able to trade or receive picks of next year. Ex: This year the Pats traded 3rd and 7th rounders for a 2nd next year. Also Seahawks and 49ers receiving 1st next year so franchise would be more realistic.

      • Freddie

I have a huge request for Madden 10 if you would like it, I would hope you can propose it. In all these Madden's were only allowed to have 10 picks. I would love to have more picks like teams this year. Also make it so we can have picks traded and received for the year after. Example Patriots trade 3rd and 7th rounder this year for 2nd next. (Actually happened.) Just like how the Seahawks and 49ers got first rounders

      McShay loved our draft
Trent Dilfer said we were the biggest winners

4 starters (Wood-RG, Levitre-LG, Byrd-FS, Nelson-TE) and Maybin should be immediate help on passing downs!!! I love it bro.

Pasta you need to look up Michael Mitchell on youtube, Dude is a player. Watch this clip and tell me what do you think

pretty good, he reads plays really well and obviously knows how to hit. NFL receivers are a bit better though and may not drop the passes that easily.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/Cons1 Cons1

Was that a highlight reel of him taking advantage of players not paying attention after they gained 15 yards?
Doesnt look like much of a playmaker to me.

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/The_King_Wilmes The_King_Wilmes

Agreed can he intercept anything? If I was a HC/GM I want a Safety who can pick off the QB. I also would want a cood Zone Cov. Safety

Really, the Patriots should definitely be winners. 4 second round picks. I'd rather that than 2 first round picks and no second round picks.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/RMerino11 RMerino11

I thought the Patriots were losers in this draft. They should of drafted Clay Mathews or Rey Maualuga. They were both there before they traded the 23rd pick.

      • COLTS!!!!!!!STEELERS

Pats do this stuff every year and every year it works I would not ? them they know wht they are doing and they do it well.

I think the Packers are winners! but why trade picks with pats and get Clay Matthews when Beanie was still on the board! I thought for sure the reason they got pats pick was to grab him of instead Clay Matthews! It's ok though Im happy with B.J. Raji

Pasta will EA have future picks for franchise this year. I mean 1 year so trades don't go crazy. It would be more realistic. They should also allow us to have over 10 picks. Can u request this if u like the idea.

The Cowboys always have a method to their madness, but I dont think that they shoud have traded down. I honestly wish that they would have traded up for Crabtree. But a man can always dream, cant he?

    • Eli Manning

There is no method to the Cowgirls just plain madness! I can't wait to have my boy Hakeem Nicks and Ramses Bardan wipe the floor with your overrated defensive backs.

        More On Michael Mitchell
Posted by Mike Florio on April 26, 2009, 12:13 p.m. EDT

Frankly, the various items we posted in the weeks before the draft regarding the guys who were drawing interest kind of blurred together on us, and we (I) can’t remember without checking the search box the specific guys who were mentioned.

As it turns out, we had a blurb on April 14 regarding Ohio safety Michael Mitchell, whose selection in round two prompted grunts, harumphs, and audible flatus from the so-called experts.

Mitchell was on that day visiting the Browns and the Bengals, and the next day the Raiders were bringing him to town.

He visited four other teams; as mentioned earlier today, the Bears had told Mitchell at the outset of round two that they’d take him with the 49th overall selection. The Raiders blocked that by picking Mitchell at No. 47.

So, in hindsight, it really shouldn’t have been a shock.

And we only wish we’d remembered to search the guy’s name at our own site on Saturday, when the grunting, harumphing, and flatusing were occuring.

      • Joe

And Rey Maualuga being drafted that low was an absolute steal, just like crabtree falling to #10.

The real steal will be when Heyward- bey cashes his 7th pick overall signing bonus!

I Dont know how the 73rd ranked safety visited with oak, cle, cincy, ind, hou, green bay, det.. official visits!!!!!!! lol @ mel kiper, thats why espn brought in todd mckshay

My cousin visited with as many teams when he was coming out of Hawaii at center. But he didnt even get drafted after being a part of the greatest team turnaround in NCAA football history. He went through camp with the 49ers and then got cut. Make no mistake, he would probably have still been on the board in round 5. But I hope he does well inspite of that retard davis.

How are the Seahawks winners if we're talking about madden? They just cut LeRoy Hill so they're still the same at LB and now the only other rookie they have so far is a backup lineman. And madden doesn't give away next year's firsts, so the broncos will still have the pick. And how can the Giants not be up their as winners? They addressed their biggest need in the first with Hakeem Nicks. And got two great value picks in the second with Clint Sintim and William Beatty.

    • seahawkspwn51

They didn't release him, they withdrew his franchise tag, and they're in negotiations right now…they didn't cut him at all…

And plus, they got Deon Butler in the 3rd round who ran a 4.38…=/ That's a Madden winner right there.

    • Bill

this is a bias winners and losers of the draft from a seahawk fan. I can name the Giants Rams among few ahead of the hawks.

    • Viking Fan

i completely agree, if this is just looking at madden then i dont see how Seattle is a winner. they are not losers, but it is just so so after the first 2 picks. hell, if we are grading the first 2 picks then Minnesota is a definate winners since they filled 2 needs. Seattle drafted a Center in the first round a few years ago. HOMER PICK!

Pasta you need to take the Bronocos off the winners list. They still have no qb. They really think Orton is gonna lead the ship then why did they try to trade for Cassel at first instead of Orton. Then they trade away next years first round pick and Draft that could include Sam Bradford who would have went number had he came out this year for a borderline cb!! Then they take one year wonder Ayers from Tennesse and still no d line! they just set the franchize back 2 years! I hope they are making a trade for Brady quinn but what can they offer now for him first round pick next year is gone! Thanks to them they just set up seattle for next year! Kudos Mc Daniel!

Well they didn't cut him, just pulled the franchise tag. Theres a possibility they'll get a long term deal worked out with him. If not than maybe they're planning to bring in Derrick Brooks which would not be a shock considering Tim Ruskell's fascination with former Bucs.

I had the Giants on my winners list. Really they ended up as the 9th team, I took the Bengals over them in the end though. But I do think they did a good job.

Pasta 50/50 with the Sanchez pick being a winner or loser. If they start him right way and he doesnt do well the fans and media will kill him, but he faced a similar pressure though playing at usc but nothing is like ny. They also need to at some recievers! who is he suppose to throw to? And to add to more pressures i hear that RB Jones is upset about his contract. So possibly a Sanchez, Green backfield??

im not seeing anything…… all i saw was safety blitzes and poorly thrown balls. he wont be able to make those plays in the nfl. now i will say he hits like a truck but covers like roy williams lol. he will get scorched by even an average qb in the league. i would put him at lb if i was the dumb ass raiders by the way thank for maclin…lol

Watching that clip, I learned one thing: dude's fast. I'm assuming that's the only reason Al Davis took him…

I am not a Raiders fan but I withhold my laughter for their selection of Heyward-Bey. Sometimes, certain players don't fit what a team is trying to do and maybe they didn't feel Crabtree was the guy.

I remember not too long ago when Ricky Williams was on the board and was expected to go top 5 yet a guy by the name of Edgerrin James went before he did. I would say that Ricky was the better college RB but Edge had more upside so no one really knows how these kids will turn out regardless of potential.

That's a good point, but I just think that with JaMarcus Russel at QB, Crabtree would be a perfect receiver for him.

And even if they didn't want him, they could have at least drafted him and then used him in a trade with someone else…maybe even in some kind of package to AZ for Boldin.

Yeah, but historically WRs drafted high tend to be busts. Just in general. He is certainly a good athlete but I wouldnt say that he will be successful in the NFL at eh place they drafted him. A top ten pick should be a future probowler. I see troy williamson more than randy moss here.
