On Monday I wrote about NCAA Football 10 coming out of the EA Sports Season Preview Event. While that game showcased features, Madden NFL 10 instead put technical improvements on display.
By now everyone has read about the Pro-Tak technology that allows for up to nine man gang tackles, “fight for the fumble”, pushing the ball carrier, and the formation of a real pocket. Pro-Tak is providing far more than just a small improvement to the tackling animations. It really has a huge affect on everything that will happen on the field and how immersive an experience the game will provide.
In the demonstration lead designer Ian Cummings attempted to show off much of what the technology has allowed for this year. In what could be a good sign it took numerous attempts to see things like a fumble pile-up or large gang tackle. The build was of the Super Bowl rematch and maybe a back like Brandon Jacobs would’ve been more appropriate for some of these animations. Willie Parker dragging defenders isn’t all that realistic or as likely to pull that off in the game. Still it was great to see the players jump on and attempt to affect the play.
It is another benefit of the procedural awareness as well. You’d get offensive players on one side and the defensive players pushing back. Depending on strength and numbers the running back could be sent back (even could result in a whistle to end the play without ever going down) or the pile may push forward gaining crucial yards. You can even go up and hit stick the pile. Interesting factoid: Ben Roethlisberger is the only QB in the game who will attempt to push a pile.
When the ball is loose and multiple players are around it they may jump on the ball which starts the “fight for the fumble” cut scene. This becomes a button mashing game, however instead of just being one button they switch it up throughout the “fight”. After some time the ref comes in, pulls the players off, and signals who has possession. It is an intense cut scene to watch. One thing I tried to make clear is the frustration that would be had if a fumble is obviously recovered but then the “fight for the fumble” happens and the ball changes possession. It was encouraging to hear they are working to make sure that will not occur. The hope is to tune the “fight for the fumble” so that it only happens about once per game. It is an exciting moment, and if it happened more than that not only would it get frustrating but it would lose that appeal.
One of the goals this year was to slim the game down. A new streamlined menu system is one of the first things that will be noticed. They’re attempting to keep the gameplay screen as clean and simplified as possible. The play selection has gone back to a single bar of three plays with no window style presentation. I hope they will have a way to change personnel, view stats, and watch replays without pausing the game though. That wasn’t evident in the build we saw. Also while weapons remain but the icons won’t be visible on field.
Controls wise they have pulled that display off the screen though it is optional and can be put back up. Defensive line moves now use the right stick instead of the bumpers which should make for a much more natural feel. A new addition is the QB Avoidance Stick. In the pocket the controller will rumble when pressure is coming. By hitting the right analog stick the QB will make a quick move. Push up and he’ll step up in the pocket, right to shift right, and left to shift left. From what I saw the QB was usually able to execute the move successfully however it doesn’t mean that there will be another couple comfortable seconds. In many cases the QB bought a little time but then got hit as he was throwing. This is another really nice improvement seeing the QB get the ball off but the throw being affected adversely by the hit.
When I attempted to describe my feeling towards the games coming out of the event it was that NCAA Football 10 was exciting while Madden 10 was impressive. That was just the nature of what they had to show given their different points in the development cycle. Much is still to be revealed for both games. It is only a little over a month until E3 and that is shaping up to be a huge event for the EA Sports titles.

April 29, 2009 at 4:49 pm
Awesome. Fantastic. Haha.
April 29, 2009 at 4:51 pm
aviodence stick like Blitz? sounds like it
April 29, 2009 at 4:55 pm
this sounds great, EA may have done something right this year.
April 29, 2009 at 5:02 pm
pasta, any news on franchise mode coming up soon?
April 29, 2009 at 5:06 pm
Both sound like buys for me this year. I'm going to be broke with those two games as well as Batman, Uncharted 2, Infamous among a host of other games that I really want.
April 29, 2009 at 8:17 pm
get game fly
April 29, 2009 at 5:12 pm
i think this is finally the year that madden breaks through and EA finally will give us a game that can change nfl video games forever, much like nfl 2k5 did back in 2004.
now all they need is some halftime and postgame replay shows and more ESPN content, and NFL 2k5 will be back in all of our rearview mirrors for good!
April 29, 2009 at 5:40 pm
I'm wondering that myself also because if I win the Super Bowl I want it seem like I really won with the confedi and streamers and a trophy presentation. P.S EA should implement a presentation option for those who want it on and the ability to turn it off for others.
April 29, 2009 at 5:43 pm
They said they would have some kind of weekly highlight show, but seeing that it's a new feature, I wouldn't get my hopes up for it this year.
April 29, 2009 at 6:00 pm
Not a fan of NFL 2K5 didn't even play it but from what I've seen from the presentation portion of the game from Youtube I hope and want EA to add some of the same things.
April 29, 2009 at 6:10 pm
Damn. You missed out.
April 29, 2009 at 8:18 pm
a missed opportunity to play a great game in 2k5
April 29, 2009 at 9:37 pm
Yeah, last year when I still had my PS2, I found a copy for under $5 at gamestop in the bargain bin and I had to get it just for old time's sake. Although the PS2 version didn't have halftime highlights like the Xbox version, which was the one I originally had, the presentation was still top notch, even by today's standards. I couldn't believe how well the game stood up even today.
Now, let's not forget it had its gameplay problems as well, but as far as presention is concerned, only MLB The Show series compares in overall presentaion of a sport.
Still hoping Madden gets the picture this year and realizes that presention is a huge part of the experience. Sounds like they are making steps in the right direction.
May 3, 2009 at 6:48 pm
they havve those features
)))
April 29, 2009 at 5:17 pm
what about the WII version PAsta?
April 29, 2009 at 7:44 pm
Ill have a short preview of the Wii version either tonight or tomorrow.
April 29, 2009 at 5:20 pm
You have to admit the madden developers are doing some great things this year.
April 29, 2009 at 5:39 pm
to bad it seems ncaa developers are sound asleep imo
April 29, 2009 at 6:12 pm
NCAA is like Madden's shy little brother.
April 30, 2009 at 12:28 am
yeah cause ncaa has always been better than madden
April 29, 2009 at 5:24 pm
Why did they get rid of the window style presentation?
Sounds like typical EA crap of giving us something good, only to take it away the next year. Oh well, back to crappy presentation that we are used to in Madden. Good grief!
April 29, 2009 at 5:35 pm
have some patience, the things they are adding will make up for that, but yes that was a good feature though…..
April 29, 2009 at 6:26 pm
I think the EA stereotypes are starting to get outdated.
They seem like they're really putting together something good this time and the presentation does look improved from last year.
April 29, 2009 at 8:31 pm
I believe they will be outdated when most of the gripes in the game are resolved and improved…….until then, let the stereotypes live on.
April 29, 2009 at 5:41 pm
looking forward to this game now tight
April 29, 2009 at 5:50 pm
I just hope we get a franchise mode that works this year. 06,07,08,09 we got nothing. EA better get this right for 2010.
April 29, 2009 at 5:59 pm
Last years worked after they patched it.
April 29, 2009 at 6:42 pm
they shouldn't have had to patch it to begin with
April 29, 2009 at 5:57 pm
sounds great and all but the QB thing I'm sure some ppl are going to have a problem with since ppl would not shut up about how hard it was for them to get a sack now they made it a little harder. (I myself have no problem getting sacks tho so I love this) Now tell us about the new online modes!!!!!!!!!!!! TEAM PLAY PLZ
April 29, 2009 at 6:00 pm
i just wanna know when there going to release all the player ratings this year, anyone?
April 29, 2009 at 6:09 pm
probably just before the game comes out
April 29, 2009 at 6:18 pm
Hey, does anyone know if the AFL 50th anniversary teams are going to have the patch on their uniform, as seen here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:AFCE-Uniform-NE...
April 29, 2009 at 6:21 pm
Madden 10 is looking and sounding great. I cannot wait to see vids of the different gang tackles and scramble for fumbles.
With both football titles looking strong, then toss in Tiger Woods 10 FINALLY with PGA Tour presentation, UFC, FIght Night 4, the summer months are starting to look great for sports gamers….
April 29, 2009 at 6:55 pm
UFC is phenomenal, and anyone hating on this Madden is completely uninformed about how deep they've gone to get the game back in the hardcore good graces. Can't. Wait.
You know, as long as Franchise mode gets fixed.
April 29, 2009 at 8:44 pm
I agree. I have played Madden since its inception and I think a lot of the negative feedback is unwarranted. Yes, the games have had flaws but I believe the real issues in terms of "hating" started when EA obtained the exclusive license. For EA in terms of business they made the right play however it definitely caused expectations to skyrocket.
I do applaud Madden fans of offering feedback and I absolutely love the approach EA has taken the past year in regards to involving the community.
I enjoyed Madden 09 and cannot wait til August….

April 29, 2009 at 11:38 pm
Do you think that video Jimmy Fallon played with his QB being carted off hte field was real. I haven't seen that in a Madden game since the Sega Genesis days.
April 30, 2009 at 12:49 am
They had me at "network-inspired highlight show."
April 29, 2009 at 6:22 pm
SO PASAT JUS SNITCHED MADDEN 2010 OUT! MADDEN IMPRESSIVE NCAA 2010 EXCITING THATS ALL I NEEDED TO HEAR! NCAA 2010 THE BEST FOOTBALL SIM GAME AGAIN THIS YEAR MADDEN 2010= RENTAL! THNX PASAT!
April 29, 2009 at 6:28 pm
Lay off the redbull there buddy tone down with all the caps.
April 29, 2009 at 10:03 pm
yea and use spell checker as well……
April 29, 2009 at 6:46 pm
they have to work on which I am sure they have not. Defensive Linebackers..shooting gaps and having lateral quicks to stop running back..Dbs..catch up speed..and slow recievers not burning corners on every slant. Also the offensive line when beat never recovers which is also unrealistic…
YO
April 29, 2009 at 8:28 pm
yeah, that might just happen…..again. we shall find out once we play it.
April 29, 2009 at 10:05 pm
hey they said in one of their first posts tha man coverage is improved so that slants will not be the best passing play in the game. i don't know everyone's problem wih it, it is easy to stop.
April 29, 2009 at 6:59 pm
when is E3?
April 29, 2009 at 7:04 pm
June 2nd-3rd IIRC
April 29, 2009 at 7:39 pm
If you got a Wii, just stick with Madden NFL 09 or 08 buddy. Trust me…. Unless you want a fake NFL Blitz game. EA has a kiddy Madden 10 Wii.
April 29, 2009 at 8:42 pm
Anyone know when Madden 10 Demo is? Or the NCAA 10 Demo?
Thanks for all your help
April 30, 2009 at 12:23 am
Both will probably be about two weeks before release of the games.
April 29, 2009 at 8:55 pm
Even with your further explanation I still hate the idea of button mashing for a fumble even if it only happens once a game. I usually win such battles but understand that this is completely unfair and this likely gives some players and instant advantage for something that is not really a skill.
Why turn a chess match into a thumb war?
Besides that though I have been very impressed by the information released on this year's Madden and it otherwise looks wonderful.
April 30, 2009 at 12:23 am
Definitely understand that feeling. Im not a huge fan of it either. But I'm not sure if there is a better way to represent the scrum.
April 29, 2009 at 9:06 pm
Vid here on ign shows the play calling screen…I hate it myself I liked the old one hope u can switch or something.
http://xbox360.ign.com/dor/objects/14270629/madde...
April 29, 2009 at 9:06 pm
There is some other vids to up on ign.
April 29, 2009 at 9:36 pm
Ok Pasta so NCAA "exciting" & Madden "impressive"? Now to me exciting sounds a lot better than impressive. With all the great additions to Madden this year I would've thought it would've been the other way around. Are you just saying that because of NCAA's online dynasty & team builder features? To me Madden looks to be leaps and bounds better than NCAA this year. I wouldn't have said that last year.
April 30, 2009 at 12:25 am
Mostly just based on what they showed. Features for NCAA, Teambuilder in particular. And technical improvements to Madden like the Pro-Tak. For me its easier to get wrapped up in Teambuilder than it is to be pumped for tackling animations. Thats all that means.
April 30, 2009 at 2:57 pm
Word…Im all about teambuilder. They already have me slaving over logos and everything.
April 29, 2009 at 9:40 pm
Sounds like this could be the best Madden yet. As long as these changes in gameplay don't break it and add a whole new slew of problems, I think what we are hearing is encouraging. Still very early, though. But at least they have there minds in the right direction.
April 29, 2009 at 9:42 pm
ok so how is it going to look on PS3??? does any1 know?? i never see video for madden on the ps3,why??
April 30, 2009 at 2:23 am
Well Madden is bigger on xbox that's pretty much y.
April 29, 2009 at 10:07 pm
no offense to Playstation 3, but the Xbox 360 is the most popular game system other than the wii and lets face it, if it's not a Nintendo exclusive, no company in their right mind would advertise their product on the Wii.
April 29, 2009 at 10:08 pm
i think this is the game announcement on your website pasta that ive seen with no oppositions to the game whatsover..must mean EA really has listened which makes me feel better about it.
April 30, 2009 at 12:26 am
Well that is true. But also you have to understand that I didn't actually play the game and we only got a demonstration. With some of this stuff I think you really have to play it and get a feel for it before determining if its a success or not.
April 30, 2009 at 1:00 am
Do you think that gameplay from late night was real with the QB getting carted off the field. Haven't sen nothing like that since Madden of the Sega Genesis.
April 29, 2009 at 10:08 pm
This just keeps getting better and better
April 29, 2009 at 10:22 pm
NICE!
April 29, 2009 at 10:53 pm
For many of us it is all about Franchise and Online Franchise. I am waiting for details on this because there is a lot of improvements to be made.
April 29, 2009 at 11:11 pm
with the way the right stick moves the d-line, and the "QB Avoidance" with the right stick is exactly what was in espn nfl 2k5… if only espn could still make games…
April 29, 2009 at 11:27 pm
This sounds awesome. Can't wait for it!!!
April 29, 2009 at 11:27 pm
alright i took a look at the videos on IGN with ian cummings showing off some new features and i like what i see, they change the play selection to back to the 06, 05, etc, with the 3 play call, the presentation definitely looks better i think they are shooting for a NBC type look where the score is at the bottom, referees are back and are interactable which means you can crash into them, everything just looks good, their new Pro-Tak system just gives them more freedom well a little. All in all i like where EA is headed
April 29, 2009 at 11:27 pm
what is E3?
April 29, 2009 at 11:50 pm
its basically a Expo to show off future video game, entertainment products, so madden, nba live, ncaa 10 and so forth and any other game you can think of at this expo.
April 29, 2009 at 11:52 pm
not just EA but many other game developers its shown on G4 tv every year.
April 30, 2009 at 12:08 am
For the love of god does anyone know if we are actually gunna get some atmosphere in this years game or will the crowd sound like a duke football game no matter in the playoffs or reg season?
April 30, 2009 at 12:28 am
They were showing the Super Bowl, and the environment we were in wasn't great to get a feel for the atmosphere of the game. To me without a homefield advantage it won't ever be really good. I didn't get the sense they've upgraded much in game atmosphere from what I saw.
April 30, 2009 at 12:36 am
Thats hugely dissapointing to me, i liked last years game but it just felt boring compared to college cuz of the home field advantage.
April 30, 2009 at 12:57 am
That was one of the things I most looking forward to when playing offline playing the Super Bowl and possibly winning it all. Its just like NCAA in terms of the atmosphere not grabbing you and bringing you in.
April 30, 2009 at 2:26 am
At least NCAA as the homefield advantage tho. Wish Madden would get that
April 30, 2009 at 1:45 am
Does NCAA have the new group tackling animations? That would really suck if it doesn't, I might actually have to buy Madden this year.
April 30, 2009 at 2:25 am
all u ppl that have been wondering about franchise mode ign posted a preview and they said that EA said there is going to be some new additions. Did not say what they are yet tho.
April 30, 2009 at 4:23 am
i will not succumb to the EA sports hype machine anymore.Of course all these things sounds cool, but i'll wait till the game comes out and play it before i get all excited.and wait till the glitchers find all the crazy bugs and make online unplayable……we always "hoping" with Madden……..i want results for a change.
April 30, 2009 at 5:08 am
When hes says NCAA football was exciting I hope he dosen't mean just Teambuilder, becaues I'm not very excitied about that.
April 30, 2009 at 5:21 am
This just keeps getting better and better
April 30, 2009 at 5:44 am
i have a feeling some people will be let down once this is released
April 30, 2009 at 9:21 am
DONT BELIEVE THE HYPE
April 30, 2009 at 11:33 am
Everything i have read so far sounds good. My only gripe would be getting rid of the play call screen as it was. Being able to call plays, change personnel, view stats, and view replays all in one place was the best IMO.
April 30, 2009 at 1:07 pm
hey pasta, does the fight for the fumble take away from the experience and make the game feel more arcade like, or is it realistic.
