Latest Madden 10 Preview and Screens

IGN has posted up hands-on impressions of Madden 10. While the preview does touch primarily on areas of the game that have already been discussed there are more in-depth details to be found. There are also 14 new screenshots which you can take a look at here. The screens focus on QBs and pocket protection.

Keep in mind that there are some big announcements still under wraps for Madden with some of them coming at E3. That is what I’m really waiting on to provide some excitement for this year. Items such as Pro-Tak, presentation, and early gameplay thoughts are offered in the preview which you can check out in full here.

Presentation, something that was seriously lacking in the first Madden iterations on current-gen systems, has seen a nice overhaul. Pre-game you’ll notice camera angles that show concession stands handing hot dogs to fans and people making their way to their seats. During the action there will be detailed cutscenes (not the low-resolution models like in last year’s game) showing players warming up on the sideline. If your quarterback is taking a licking on the field you’ll see him trot over to the sideline and pick up a phone to talk to the coach’s box.

Wow good spot, hopefully they will get that out of there. It looks pretty good, but all the QB's look skinny. There doesn't seem to be much size differential. Oh well, it's still in progress. Thanks for the update Pasta.

The reason the QBs look skinny is because they don't have QB jackets, everything else seems spot on in terms of arm, leg and shoulder proportions.

I dont know if I am the only one who thinks this, but is his non-throwing arm way to thin? Also his skin tone seems a light to me as well. As for the face, It looks much improved. If you removed the Chargers logos I would still be able to tell who it was just by the face.

i have a problem with the fact that they claim to have taken time on the player models. they worked so hard to focus on how ben looked and how "big" he was but what about everyone else. since im an eagles fan im gonna focus on eagles players. mcnabb looks skinny as hell and has tiny ass arms. whats with that? how about westbrook. westbrook is small but hes no where near that frail. hes kinda stocky so y in the hell is he so small. no homop but his legs r big as hell!!. big ben is not the only player in the game. there are more player model issues but those r two that just r really off. but the faces r well done tho.

I thought the fonts on the nameplates were going to be fixed, so the Houshmandzadehs of the world didn't get scrunched. Haynesworth's name looks pretty scrunchy to me.

You gotta love the time that's being taken to add realism to the look (e.g. yard markers, refs, kickers nets), yet all of the camera men are pointing away from the action.

There is some sort of cooperative online mode coming, so I think its a possibility. I get the sense though that it is something "new" and not just team play or online franchise. Could be some sort of combination, or expansion on the leagues with new elements. It'll be interesting to find out, only a couple weeks away.

Ian Cummings already posted a follow-up on the Operation Sports boards to some of the grumblings that were a direct result of some of the criticism in the preview:

"Well, first of all, I don't really see this as a bad preview. Sure he can have gameplay and camera feedback about an alpha build that's in progress, but all the rest of the rather glowing praise seemed to make me feel pretty good.

Regardless, his concerns are all valid, but again all things are still very much in progress. The entirety of the pocket stuff is still being worked on and tuned…the pocket and gang tackles are our big remaining items…making sure you can't scramble out, making sure you actually get pressure, etc. Just so everyone knows, Nate was also playing on Pro mode – a mode where we are very purposely making it easier to stay in the pocket. It's quite a culture shock to have defenders right in your face after 20 years of not worrying about it.

We all know the fumble pileup thing is going to be totally subjective within the community, and though it is extremely rare (played a full 10 min qtr game yesterday, had 3 fumbles, and didn't see it), you still have the option to turn it off.

Anyway, I am hoping that you can take more away from the article – the gameplay tuning items are very valid but they are also in progress."

I 2nd the opinion on realistic player models. Although, I'm more into the stimulation aspect as opposed to the visuals I still would like it to be a proper representation of a athlete's physical stature. McNabb is a very big QB even though he's listed at 6'2 he probably is the strongest QB in the NFL by far. I always thought it was laughable when they would have Big Ben with more strength when McNabb is benching over 500 pounds. Now they have Big Ben with larger arms now as well lol. Oh well no biggie for me really but if they are going to do it once for Big Ben then they should do it for McNabb as well.

Is it just me being freaked out by the way the arms of the guy in the banner picture look?

His left arm is tiny (Much like the legs of players in NBA Live), and his right upper arm appears to bend in a direction that it really should not.
Plus, both arms appears to have dropped be 6-7 inches lower than where they should start..

The graphics are good enough. Some of the stuff I've read about details are a bit too nit picky. There's a give and take here, after all, it's a video game and can't expect it to look like you're watching a real game on TV. My only concern coming into this year's game is strictly on gameplay. I couldn’t care any less about how Big Ben looks or if Rivers' arms are too big or small…big freak'n deal.

One thing that I read in the ING review that was alarming is that the pocket formation using ProTak doesn't seem to work all that well. I hope that's not the case in the final product because that's something I've really been looking forward to. It would be great to have a true forming pocket and finally put a stop to the ol' drop back and sprint to the side lines play. I'm eager to see what info comes out of E3.

I think some of you people are morons. Its either you criticize to much on a pic, or you give to much credit. You can't make solid judgements from a pic based on a still shot from one angel. You have to see the game in motion from the normal playing angle before you can realistically make a sound judgement. But since the majority of the Madden audience are kids, then this is why we get all the hideous opinions…
