Your UFC 2009 Impressions

With UFC 2009 Undisputed out today I’m interested in reading your thoughts on the game so far. For a first attempt it seems as though THQ really came through but there are inevitably going to be some issues. I’m most excited to try out some of the different style fighters and see which suits my style of play the best.

One issue that has become immediately apparent is that people can quit online matches without being penalized and the person who got quit on doesn’t receive the win either. I warned Jerkfacefave of this yesterday. Low and behold he was dominating his first online fight and his opponent quit on him. The game didn’t register anything…it is like it never happened. So this is a major concern for anyone who is playing ranked games online, though luckily it isn’t something that will harm our league experience.

PFC league sign-ups continue in the forum and we’re really pleased with the level of interest so far. There is no cut-off date for the league as people will be able to come in and out at their leisure depending on the fighters available. However getting signed up before Friday will give you a better chance of getting one of your preferred fighters.

I’ll be spending some time with the game late tonight and tomorrow leading up to my first impressions and HD videos.

Should be bouncing soon myself to get my copy…I thought it was funny today how IGN, in particular, bashed the game because "there were no ring entrances" among other things but gave Punchout (w/no online feature at all) an 8.8 and that game has like only 13 fighters! I have been jamming this UFC demo versus my buddies and we all love it and can't wait to get home…………….BIG UFC FIGHT SATURDAY TOO!

    • Mo Diddley

Why are you bashing IGN now? They probably have the most unbiased review of video games on the net. Just because somebody doesn't share your views mean that they are wrong. Go outside and get some sun buddy or at least open up the curtains you mama's basement boy.

"bashing IGN/they are wrong"…..I said I thought it was funny
"go outside and get some sun"…..I am working, and was working then. What do you do? Collect unemployment?

It's outstanding. The fight mechanic is easy to learn, difficult to master. The fighter selection is wonderful and deep. Career mode is proving itself to me with every successful sparring session. However, there's no true single-player mode for the shipped character list. Wouldn't it be nice to play through a career with your favorite fighter?

The entrances are not a big deal, since they're not shown unless the fight is a main event on a PPV card anyway, but why not include them for those fights? It would be those moments a little bigger.

Overall, the game is brilliant. I think that haters are just frustrated that they're getting tapped out on Beginner.

Oh, and Pasta? I'd LOVE to join the league, but are all fights during the day? This guy works for a living.

Fights can be whenever during the week. You would just have to coordinate with your opponent for that week.

    Early Impressions on career mode

    ~HEAD SCRATCHERS~

-Created fighters never age. They say your career lasts 7 years before they decide if you are inducted into the hall of fame, yet 2 years into my career mode…my 20 year old fighter is still 20. Hopefully they can patch this. It would be nice not to have Chuck Lidell be 39 forever or my young 20 year old fighter be 20 forever.

-Dana White at times will ask your to step into a card to replace an injured fighter, promising an extra bonus…but it's really a fantasy bonus bc there is no bonus. Just a short training week and usually a fatigued under developed fighter

-It can get repetitive. After your first 6 fights, the same congrats emails for winning fights, the same interviews for pre fights, the same updates on previous cards. Wish they had more email variety

  • grey

-Very very very hard to pull off any kind of submissions and flash knockouts happen way to often. Hopefully this will be addressed in the first patch

-CAB nicknames are far and few. Only 10. And out of the 10 only 2 or 3 are decent. Come on THQ, just port over the WWE nicknames…is it really that difficult? To have name recognition so that we can name our fighter what we want?

*Dont get me wrong…this is a very very good game. Fun to knock people out. Really really sharp learning curve especially with transitions and takedowns…but very solid game and effort compared to the first UFC.

  • Clitty Buddy

UFC is real fun but it has no depth. Career mode is ok and online is meh….nothing special. I'm worried that I'll get bored of this game but right now I am loving it.

PASTA!!!! WHEN THE FUCK ARE YOU GOING TO GIVE US SOMETHING ON NCAA '10? EVERYDAY ITS MADDEN, UFC, OR FNR4. WHAT GIVES?

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/pastapadre pastapadre

All NCAA seems to want to talk about is Season Showdown. I'm not going to bore you guys with more of that. E3 will bring some good stuff though and we're less than two weeks out now.

      • Hawkeye4077

Pasta do you know of any features that are in Madden 10 that will be carried over to NCAA, ProTak for example? I saw some videos of NCAA 10 and the pocket formation looked like last year's game, in other words, like crap. I think I read somewhere that ProTak technology will also be in NCAA 10. Is that correct?

One of the biggest things I want to know about NCAA is if they're going to make defense respectable this year. Last year, they went with a "college feel" which apparently meant no defense and nothing but big plays. I wonder if they're going to tone that down this season. Looking forward to E3 stuff coming out soon!

        • http://intensedebate.com/people/pastapadre pastapadre

Pro-tak is in NCAA, you just wont see the "up to nine man" tackles. But there are benefits like the pocket which you mentioned.

So far I am loving the game. I think the real meat and potatos of the game is the online mode and a league would be perfect for this game. I would love to join the league, Pasta I am going to San Juan for a few weeks though so I wont be available to play till like June 6th.

So far career mode is slow going but fun…..and repetitive but thats how you get better in real life. REPEAT REPEAT REPEAT untill you can do it in your sleep. It's like anything else. I am building a fighter from the ground up so I can take him online and fight with him. That would be the true reward for me.

Played 1 game online so far (unranked) and went to the 3rd and got submitted. But the game was smooth and very responsive which is a must in a game like this. I am very pleased with the game. I think of all the games in my library (besides COD) you will find me online with this more than all of them.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/pastapadre pastapadre

Cool, well when you get back you can opt in with any available guy or maybe by then we'll be allowing in created fighters.

Love the game but 1 thing that seems to bugging the hell out of me is, I feel like some people online have turbo controlers. The submission/ breakout submission being tapping a button is terrible IMO. It should be only rotating the R-Stick so you know no cheating is being done.

The only reason I state this because sometimes very early in the fight I get submitted in a instant instead of the long played out submission when it feels like you have a chance to break out of it. I know it could do with the player Im using mostly (Brock Lesnar) but my 1st 9 wins I broke out of every submission with tapping the shit out of the buttons. My last 4 fights It seems to not matter anymore tapping as hard as possible. And 1 fight in particular I swear I was a slp to the face away from a quick win from ground pounding a dude and he gets me in a submission and QUICKLY submits me after me murdering him all rd. I still feel like I was cheated in some way, like he had a turbo charged controller. Guess will never know though :(

    • James

Ground and pound takes alot of stamina away… and the less stamina you have the more likely it is that youll tap and and the more difficult it is to break away. Maybe that might be the reason because Ive done some awsome submissions when some guy was pounding on me… all I do is block and let him pound on my gaurd then grab an arm and match over.

      • ACREYMAN

you cant get out by simply tapping one button. You have to either spin the R stick or do a brute force escape by hitting all four buttons in a certain order (forget without looking at it). the turbo wont give you an advantage here

Ok so IGN gave it a 7.6 but Gametrailers gave it an 8.9? I'm on the fence about buying this game because I'm really not a UFC fan but I played the demo & liked it. I normally trust IGN's ratings more than any other website but Gametrailers are usually on point too. So anyone out there that has the game already and was on the fence like me, can you please let me know if it's really worth dropping $65 or should I just wait for FN4 because I love boxing.

    • Blieqws22

UFC has better boxing in it then Fight Night round 4 will

Wait !!!! The game lacks depth and after the 1st week goes by this game is gonna get boring.

The depth is in the online. I compare it to COD4. COD4 had a small and fast CPU campaign but the online was DEEP! Same with this in a way. Career mode is cool but online is where it is at. Loosing feels shitty and winning feels great. In a way the career mode is really deep. You can create a figher in every weight class for instance and work your way up. And you can create different fighting styles for each fighter.

mkay i have a problem with my ps3 i have the hd cords and it keeps on logging me on as 1080p and it goes straight to a black screen on the home pagae na du cant see nothing but when the game starts ig switches to 720 and works fine any idea how to fix this cuz its annoying not being able to go to my home screen

Turn the 1080p option off… if its on it will go straight to 1080 as a default so just turn it off and you should be good. (some ps3 games do this, not just UFC)

Played for 6 hours last night, mostly career mode. have not played online yet probably will when i get home tonight. only a few things that bother me are flash knockouts happen way to often, i will be getting my ass kicked the whole round and be one punch away from death and then all of the sudden i knock the guy out. getting of the ground when your on bottom is pretty difficult to do unless im doing something wrong. career mode is way to short i am already in my third year. good thing i signed up for pasta's league cause thats all i will be doing after i finish career mode in every weight class. my friends love ufc so we will be playing that alot its a def tourney worthy game with friends. all and all i would give it an 8.5/10

I think the game is fun but would get boring pretty fast. I've only played 20 matches so far, but I've won the majority of them and all with button mashing. The game is very shallow. I can just punch and kick all that I want until I knock a guy out. I don't even have to do any of the ground stuff, as I can just wiggle the right stick around like crazy and get out of every hold it seems.

Just seems like you can punch and kick your way to every victory pretty easily, so there isn't a need to do much else.
