NCAA Football 10 Charging for Dynasty Boosts

Brian Ekberg of Gamespot has received a beta copy of NCAA Football 10 and is posting content as well as answering questions about the game. You can visit here and add questions of your own. Alarmingly he had this to say earlier today which is gone into more detail in this posting:
I haven’t dipped that far into dynasty mode yet but it looks very simliar to previous years. That said, there is one significant change: You can add an additional pipeline state by paying for it. With real money (MS Points or cash on PSN). In fact, that’s not the only so-called “dynasty accelerators” you can apparently purchase: there’s also recruiting advisor, coaching seminar, toughest places to play boost, school pitches improvements, maximum player training, and recruiting reports as well. According to the game, these boosts will affect every team you control in offline and online dynasty modes. I need to investigate these more to see what they actually do for you…
I’ve never taken issue with offering DLC “cheats” if they could only be utilized offline. If it increases someone’s enjoyment of the game and they see the value in it then that is their decision to make. However any time it factors into online it creates an imbalance and unfair playing field. When I first read about this I was taken aback by the comment about it applying to both offline and online dynasties.
If there is nothing to prevent these being used in Online Dynasty that will be a crushing blow to the legitimacy of the dynasties. Hopefully either these are not permitted or there is a way to block them. It doesn’t sound good though from the way he phrased it coming straight from the game.
Also now comes news that apparently you will only get Teambuilder slots by purchasing the game new. Previously EA inferred that everyone with the game would get 12 slots but Gamestop would offer 13 additional to their preorders. It turns out that you’ll only get the 12 initial slots if the game is bought new, otherwise a code would have to be purchased. Basically buy the game new or else pay to use Teambuilder. This method of offering an incentive for buying new is something that we’ve seen before it’s just unfortunate in this situation because they didn’t make it clear from the start.
For NCAA which is dealing with enough bad buzz right now these are disappointing developments. Coming off NCAA 09 which was my favorite sports game last year due to Online Dynasty it is rough to see it in this state.

It's considered an "accelerator" and lets you access items early that you can earn through the course of playing the game. One example is the ability to unlock all promises in recruiting. Typically, you have to play through several seasons of Dynasty Mode, deliver on promises, and build up Coach Integrity to unlock all promises. Now you can pay for them to be unlocked. (However, if you fail to deliver on the new promises it will backfire.) Same goes for unlocking an additional pipeline state – while it gives you an immediate in, you still have to recruit hard. They are also similar to all of the unlocks in TW10 that came out this week. You can buy those or earn them in-game.
From Ekberg's comments, it sounds like these unlocks only last one Dynasty season. People would have to pay for them in each season of Dynasty, which I don't see people doing. I'm not a big fan of this type of DLC, but I also don't see many people using it.

wow, i had high hopes for ncaa especially since madden is looking so good and i figured ncaa would keep up as they usually do. this year though? ncaa might be one of the poorest sports games of the year especially comparing it to last year, no significant additions and their major feature is some lame online mode (season showdown). the ncaa crew needs to be kicked in the ass like with madden or else its gonna end up being the opposite of years past where madden was lagging with ncaa in the lead. theyre lucky i love college football so much otherwise i probably wouldn't buy it.

I am actually looking forward to Madden 10 Wii and NHL 10 off course. Well maybe, NCAA b-ball will get on track. Pasta, I am also concerned that the NCAA Be A Pro Mode has been embargoed until the end of the month. Why did they decide to wait so long? It does not instill much confidence. What do you think?

I loved NCAA last year more so than Madden. Worst is, NCAA has so much more potential (more teams, the whole school spirit thing etc..) and its now come to this!

Eh, this is really the only way they can prevent people from getting used games. I'm pretty sure they don't see a cent of that money so DLC was pretty much a silver lining for EA in this current era of video games.

This along with the lack of addition to gameplay and presentation is why I'm not buying NCAA this year. It's really sad the direction sports gaming is going (mainly just this franchise), charging for DLC is for RPG and shooter games.

why do they think people would want this, especially for offline dynasty. Recruiting has never been hard enough that i would pay money to get a pipeline state, which having those hardly helps anyway. So stupid. I've never been one to complain about EA's games, but this is a head scratcher

Im usually one to make fun of people for talking crap on EA cuz its the "cool" thing to do. But, this is pretty lame. I thought the whole point of dynasty was to earn the improvments to your franchise. Ive never really liked the NCAA games anyways,but this sucks for people that do. The only thing that made me kinda want it was the team builder and now you hav to BUY it to use it? TERRIBLE

This game started off looking to be a good improvement on one of my favorite games. I always have liked the big plays and intensity of NCAA over Madden, but with these consistently disappointing updates coming, I may not even buy the game this year. Madden has seemed to make huge steps in the right direction while NCAA has trailed off. The roster issue and now this have left a bad taste in my mouth and is it upsetting to see such a truly enjoyable game struggle. Hopefully at least the rosters can be salvaged to make me buy NCAA 10. I want to want this game, but at this point I just don't.

I don't have issues with having to buy a game new to get to use a certain feature since used game profits don't go to the companies who spend tons of money to make the games.
The thing I hate is having to pay for extra boosts and other additions via DLC. To me, if someone is going to drop $60 on a game, provide every extra. Hell, make the extras available through achievements…Having to fork over extra cash, to me, is not a good deal….

Now that Madden has Online Franchise, why would they even consider making a their product cost more when they're already struggling.
Unless the game comes out and is somehow really good, I'm just going to wait a month and enjoy Madden 10. It's a shame NCAA couldn't get their act together this year.

I agree somewhat. The NCAA series, even with the little imperfections, has always been a fun ass game. I thought NCAA 09 was solid and hope this year's game provides the same excitement.

I loved last year's game and still play it because the Online Dynasty was amazing.
But now that I can get my fix from Madden's Online Franchise, I personally don't think NCAA is worth the money this year. I probably had a about 10 different dynasties at some point last year so when they're talking about paying to improve your team, this is something I'd have to do with each dynasty assuming it was a competitive group. I just don't see the value in that.

everyday i find out new info about NCAA 10 the less i want this game. I enjoyed last year NCAA football but it seems like this game is taking a step back or a half of step forward. Madden team is putting in a lot of work to make there product better and listening to some of the complaints people are posting online. NCAA looks like Madden from last year with a couple of upgrades.

I've been saying it all along, NCAA mailed it in for 2010, and this further strengthens that point. This is disgracful; to be charging for features that should be included and charging to get unfair advantages online? Really, has it come to this? I figured that EA foresees sales taking a dramatic noise dive from last year since they didn't do anything that would justify anyone going out and making this a "must buy" on hype alone. This game deserves to tank, because they didn't put much effort behind it.

Have I got some shit for you guys! I childhood friend of mine who works for EA has sent me a finished copy of NCAA Football 10 for the 360. I just want to be the first to say that this is a huge disappointment. HUGE. I had received it in the mail this morning to my surprise, with a note, and I quote…"Jesse, I need to get on with the Madden guys. I can't take this carelessness anymore. Try and enjoy." This game is GARBAGE! There is absolutely NO difference from last year whatsoever! A couple of new animations, tweaks to Dynasty mode (couldn't go online or try a teambuilder team), teams STILL WITH GENERIC FUCKING STADIUMS, sidelines are exaclty the same, NO PENALTIES called in a FULL GAME (or new ones for that matter), sliders did not work AT ALL, EVERYTHING IS JUST RUSHED AND NOT NEW. The new title is EA Sports NCAA "Pick 6" Football 10, that's all I have to say.

A note was on it when it arrived at my house, and I quote "Boom-shaka-laka-boom". This game is GARBAGE! It is like playing NBA Jams. All the players have big heads and tiny bodies. I've read everything on this issue and this is what is comes down too. 6 man Big 12 online dynasty….having heard the buzz surrounding the "accelerators" all users decide they ain't buyin' nothing right……Before the dynasty is comprimised and to run a "clean" dynasty the commish tries to find the screen opting to turn this feature off….unable to do so the commish starts the dynasty and advances into week 1.

For $12.95 one of the user's buys the "all you can eat buffet to boost your dynasty" accelerator. Out of nowhere and within 4 weeks of advances…IOWA ST. Cyclones are out recruiting fellow players' teams such as the Sooners, Longhorns, Cornhuskers, Red Raiders….etc. Cyclones end up getting the 4th best recruiting class in the nation despite going 6-6 on the year. Off season tasks: the Cyclones "hit the gym hard" add performance enhancing drugs (i.e. player progression boost ) to the training program which adds give or take 7-10+ ovr. to each player before the start of the next COMPRIMISED year. All user's are calling out Iowa St. for using the cheats/"accelerators" therfore ruining the experience for everyone involved. On side note: I"m stll buying the game and if one of the user's in my dynasty ends up like Iowa St….I'll simply "Remove User" from the online dynasty. However, it's only a quick fix for a never-ending online dynasty problem. Iowa St. fans….no disrespect.
