Gamestop Preorders Get Extended Madden 10 Demo

Gamestop has just updated their Madden 10 product pages to include information on an exclusive demo being offered to those who preorder the game. Basically it sounds as though people who don’t preorder will still be getting a demo, but it will offer abbreviated quarters or be something similar to the “Madden Moment” that made up the demo last year. And actually that is what will happen as the public demo will be Cowboys vs Giants with two minute quarters.

Reserve Madden NFL 10 and receive the GameStop exclusive Super Bowl XLIII rematch demo with full length quarters. The demo will feature four 5-minute quarters between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals. Available for online and in-store customers while supplies last.

This continues to be a disturbing trend having demos linked to preorders. At least in this case it appears that everyone will have access to some form of a demo at the same time unlike Fight Night Round 4 which withheld it from everyone else for several weeks. According to the info the demo will be out in late July.

I guess they did some brain storming and came up with this. Nice. That's a pretty solid demo.

Pasta i know you dont really like this practice but i really dont have a problem to much with it. For the simple reason it only cost $5 and you can get your money back or move it to another game if you wish. Especially for a game im really interested in i dont mind at all.

The demo is supposed to make you want to buy the game, not be a treat for people who already bought it. This is backwards thinking, or greediness, or something lame. The best thing we can do to get rid of this crap is don't pre-order it at Gamestop!

Why only give the extended demo to people who are already planning on buying the game?

From their perspective it ensures people are buying new copies of the game. Gamestop benefits the most obviously. There is really no benefit to the consumers to do this, I actually think at least in the case of FNR4 it pissed people off and took the steam out of the public demo weeks later.

How does Gamestop benefit the most? This is assuring that people buy new copies of the game. That means EA gets most of the profit.

Gamestop is actually going to lose money because of this. Instead of waiting 2 weeks after release and getting the game used (100% profit for Gamestop), people will be buying it new.

Scott's right – Gamestop would much rather you buy the game used. For example, I took in my copy of PGR4 and they bought it for $3. I watched the guy resticker it for $17.99. That's a ridiculous mark-up. EA benefits the most from this, and that's the bottom line.

Because a portion of the sales goes to the retailer. If 1,000 people pre-order the game (using a small example), most likely 95% will pre-order at GameStop….

Right. This drives people to go into Gamestop and buy the game there. Plus it can get them in the stores where they'll push even more preorders on them.

Buying it online means paying the full price. But they don't actually charge your card till it ships, so I suppose you could cancel after getting the code.

Hmm…an extended demo a month early at GS or the full game ~ a week early at any mom-n-pop game store…choices…

I guess $5 isn't too much to waste for the demo.

I'm going to be playing NCAA, so a full demo of Madden does nothing for me. Yeah, it's a must buy for me, but the need to pre-order with Madden is zero. You can buy it almost anywhere – in fact I saw a few sporting good's stores selling it last year.

A lot of you think this is shady business, but maybe it's not…

By making an extended demo available, EA can show off the glitz and glamour of the in-game features they think people will love. Obviously, no out-of-game features will be part of this demo, but EA is betting that if you, the end user, will be so impressed with new in-game features, that you'll forget about the other stuff for a while. A longer demo just gives people more time to experience a greater set of variables.

And I don't agree that this is bad for Gamestop. Think about it: They get whordes of pre-orders so they know how many copies to distribute, and, if the game sucks, people will just return it, and they'll sell it used much more quickly. How can they go wrong?

All u have to do is put 5$ down on the game and get the demo key than if you want just un pre-order it and u get ur 5$ bak so really does not matter. I did that with a game before can't remember the game, now I won't be un pre-ordering madden I know that but some will just try the demo and just un pre-order it if they want and done simple as that. GS gives the Money bak and make nothing.

Yes, but it's all about cash flow. Recently, there was a news story on how the video game industry has suffered its worsth quarter in history.

When EA signs a deal with GS, they're betting that GS will oversell the game. GS also benefits in another way. It gets people in store. They browse around, find that used game they wanted a few months ago, and bang, more sales! Most people won't bother to drive to the store to get a $5 refund, so GS really can't lose.

well i will just put 5 down for a preorder at gamestop and pre order it with my other store for 5 dollar that gets and sell the game a week before it comes out. Then after madden comes out cancel the pre order with gamestop.

Pasta, didn't you post on the site a while ago stating there might be a Gamestop promotion with EA that if you paid a flat fee of about $20, you could get all EA games for that season (EA's '10 games) at a reduced rate, $39.99 I think. So it looks like that's not gonna fly with EA games already out for '10, but maybe this is an alternative deal that Gamestop is doing with EA.

Yeah, you have to keep checking, don't expect them to tell you it's there. With the preorders of Fight Night, I went in the day the Gamestop Fight Night Round 4 demo code was out, and they gave it to me. Had I not gone in, I wouldn't have gotten it.

That may be the case, but I'm guessing that places like Best Buy or Target are going to give sweet incentives to buy Madden there. Just look at what Best Buy did with UFC – They gave a $10 BB Gift Card, $10 off DirecTv pay-per-views, and a free DVD.
