How Good Are Favre and Vick in Madden 10?

Yesterday brought about the much heralded additions of Michael Vick and Brett Favre to Madden 10. The ratings are out there (Vick – Favre) but how effective they are in the game can not always be determined by looking at ratings. Continue on for analysis of the two players while user controlled and CPU simmed.

Having run my franchise with Pat White I knew that would be a good basis to judge Vick from. He definitely has a quicker release and a little more zip on his passes while his accuracy is slightly better. Mobility wise Vick is quicker but they are comparable in that regard in threat to the defense. Where I came into problems with Vick is when I tried to lead receivers or fit the passes into tight spaces. The ball tends to sail and accuracy is certainly inconsistent. I do feel much more confident with Vick however as a passer than White while both are somewhat prone to fumbling when on the run. I definitely can see people preferring to use Vick as a starter, though utilized more sparingly he would be a dangerous weapon to keep the defense on its toes.

I simmed three different seasons as the starter taking all the snaps to find out how Vick would fare. The player ratings should produce realistic results.

QB Rating: 77.4, 76.8, 59
TDs: 24, 29, 22
INTs: 11, 18, 27
Yards: 3682, 4057, 3409
Avg Yards: 230.1, 253.5, 213
Comp/Incompletions: 305/586, 346/641, 283/595

So in the simmed seasons the CPU doesn’t have Vick running very much while coming in way high on passing yards and TDs. Vick has never averaged over 200 yards a game passing and never had a season with over 20 TDs. However QB rating and completion percentages come in almost dead on to career averages.

For comparisons sake in one sim I moved Seneca Wallace and Pat White to become starters. Wallace had a strong season with a 82.8 QBR, 34TD-19INT, and 3639 yards. White struggled though with a 61.7 QBR, 12TD-15INT, 2519 yards and only 50% completions.

It was immediately evident that Favre’s arm strength and quick release remain great traits in Madden. I was able to hit some passes that I would’ve had no chance with had it been Pat White. Favre’s accuracy is also decent and a huge upgrade over Tavaris Jackson though comparable to Sage Rosenfels. Biggest difference there is throwing deep downfield Favre is the guy you want back there. His mobility is also good enough to occasionally scramble or buy time in the pocket.

Favre’s passing yards being down would make sense given the run oriented team, but you’d also think he’d be hitting some big passes to the speedy receivers at times. What stands out most is the lack of INTs even with fewer pass attempts. Favre hasn’t thrown less than 15 INTs in a season since 1996. So maybe his accuracy ratings, especially the deep accuracy, really are too high and we’re seeing the product of that in the simmed results.

i played a game last night against the cpu using Philly against Minnesota. Vick was pretty decent as a quarterback but you nailed it when you commented that he sails passes when trying to lead receivers. Most of my incompletes were of that variety. His mobility is very good and doesn't seem too unrealistic or arcadey. His speed feels right.

With the CPU playing Favre he was a passing machine. He nearly completed every pass and even won player of the game. He gave up 0 interceptions. As with most games against the CPU I find that it is very difficult to get to the QB basically 100% of the time which is the exact opposite of the CPU defenders. They seem to get pressure on the QB almost every pass play. With Favre's quick release and rocket arm coupled with the inability to get a decent pass rush makes perfect sense as to why Favre would complet damn near every pass and throw no picks.

I definitely think Tiburon needs to adjust the pass blocking. There is no excuse for the CPU to exact an effective pass rush every play and you, the player, can't.

The second half starts and all of a sudden the CPU is playing like John Elway in the 2 minute offense leading the Broncos to yet another come from behind 4th quarter victory. It is so obvious to see that the game self adjusts in order to make the game competive/exciting. I for one don't like this trend in madden at all. If you are owning a team then you should own them, but to artificially improve a teams performance to keep the scoring close is BS.

Dude, you totally CAN rush the passer in Madden 10. I am in week 6 of my franchise with the Giants and have 9 sacks with Justin Tuck on All-Pro difficulty. Once you master the right analog stick D-Line moves and switch player accordingly you will see. I do agree that its a hell of a lot easier for the comp to do it, but thats just cheezy comp shit thats in every sports video game

He's very dangerous when it comes to scrambling even with fact that his speed is a 90. Overall, he's a real good QB but really struggles when when passing time after time. It may also be that Madden is a pass happy game. In franchise they run about 7 times all game.

I think one of the things this year for EA was to make each team play to its strenghts, and how they actually play in real life, They also want to use the Star players more. In 09 it would be games where the star players wouldnt even have a touch or a catch until the fourth quarter

As for Vick, before he got locked up, he was trying to make the transition to becoming more of a pocket passer in the West Coast offense, similar to McNabb. I think we're going to see more devotion and preparation from Vick this year as he tries to improve his accuracy and only run when he NEEDS to, not because it gives his team the best chance of winning.

In the first game, I was nervous at first to play a Favre-led Vikings team. In the first quarter, the Vikings charged down the field to the 10 yard line, eating up nearly the entire quarter. Finally, my luck changed. I blitzed Favre on a passing play, and he tried to rifle the ball to one of his receivers in the middle of the endzone. Kevin Payne picked it off, and I started at the 20 yard line. This was an omen for things to come, as I held Adrian Peterson to 41 yards rushing and Favre threw 3 interceptions and no TDs. I had the most success I have ever experienced against the Vikings defense. Forte rushed 17 times for 98 yards and 2 TDs, and Cutler threw for 265 yards with 4 TDs and 1 INT.

The game ended with the Bears winning 49-0.

In the second game, I originally planned to play one quarter (which later ended up being the whole game) with Michael Vick as the starting QB. I decided to supersim through the defensive plays and try Vick in the Wildcat. I ended up finding a major glitch in the Eagles Wildcat as Lesean McCoy grabbed 30 receptions and had 285 yards receiving for the game. With Vick running the Wildcat, he rushed for over 40 yards, but completed 28 of 41 passes for 385 yards with 4 TDs and 0 INT. Clearly this should not happen, but for whatever reason, the CPU could not stop that play.

The game ended with the Eagles winning 31-24.

It's the only passing play in the Eagles Wildcat formation. Try it out, and maybe you will see what I'm talking about. I would never do it for real.

The only beef I have wit the ratings is Favre's accuracy. He doesn't throw lots of interceptions because he's off the mark. He always throws interceptions because he makes dumb decisions. He likes to chuck the ball up in the air. He never really has a problem with getting the ball where he wants it to go.

well I used the new rosters and started a new franchise, first I put Vick up to 78overall, and Favre up to 87, as well as putting Brady up to 99overall. I would love to see Vicks real throwing motion in the next roster update! Favre lost his first game in franchise— to the Browns, Braylon Edwards is very good at catching the longball in Madden 10.
