Shooting in NBA Live 10

EA Sports has posted up another blog entry detailing everything to do with the shooting mechanics in NBA Live 10 and what drives the success of each shot. The three main areas of focus that were considered with any changes had to do with control, balance, and authenticity. Included is an impressive tutorial video that displays much of what is discussed in the blog. You can check out the full posting and video here.

We’ve also completely done away with our ratings-based shot success calculation and are now driving all of our shooting percentages through Dynamic DNA. It’s a very complex heuristic which takes a lot of various factors into consideration. But the end result is picture perfect shot distribution and percentages. Needless to say, I’m really happy with the way shooting is balanced in Live 10. If you take the time to understand the strengths and weaknesses of your players, and properly balance your offensive attack, Live 10 will reward you.

Updating on the demo it is still expected to be out next Thursday September 10th for the 360 but it will not be out for the PS3 until September 17th. This seems to have become the trend with downloadable offerings as of late. Its ironic isnt it? Everyone wants competition, but with the sport that is most competitive between the two companies all people do is put down one or the other. Instead they should enjoy what they both bring to the table.

I think when people bash Live they are really bashing EA as a company. I think people put all EA Sports games in the same bucket right or wrong. People are mad about EA having the exclusive NFL rights so the perception is that EA is a greedy lazy company. I'm not saying that it is right but that is the perception and you know what they say perception is reality. Also EA is known to overhype their games year after year (which I understand is a smart business strategy). So I think people are just voicing their anger towards EA as a whole more so than directing it towards Live.

So it can go both ways. For whatever reason though fans of NBA 2K get really sensitive at the thought that Live could be good. Like it offends them or they feel threatened by it. That is what is most perplexing about it all to me.

we are not offended by the thought that it could be good. I would be happy with two great games to let the people choose. And I'll admit, live has made strides. but the only thing is that these strides should have been made like 4 years ago. I mean they are now just adding features that have been in nba 2k since 2k5.

Lets just take a look at the cycle of next-gen for EA:

1. NBA Live 06: Completely stripped down version with only play now, season mode and practice mode. IGN review: 5.9
2. NBA Live 07: Added a few things, but still a bad game with framerate issues and glitches. IGN review: 6.0
3. NBA Live 08: Added some more minor stuff, but still a badly reviewed game. IGN: 6.9
4. NBA Live 09: Bring in Mike Wang and finally get some fundamental basketball features in the game. Was a solid basketball game but was still missing a lot: IGN: 6.5

Now lets look at 2k's cycle:
1. NBA 2k6: Ported over the ps2 version with every single feature and updated graphics and was as great as the ps2 version. IGN: 7.8
2. NBA 2k7: Just like 2k6, but with some better gameplay and more signature animations and shots,and slightly improved graphics. IGN: 8.3
3. NBA 2k8: Better overall, but not as good as 2k7, could be attributed to the departure of Mike Wang. IGN: 7.9
4. NBA 2k9: The best of the PS3/360 generation by far. Gamers had mixed reviews, but game sites gave it solid ratings across the board. IGN: 8.5.

So you tell me which is better. EA failed to break the 7/10 barrier, while 2k has had solid high 7's and mid 8's out of 10.

but thats what i hate about EA. why do they spend money to overhype their game and show it off? instead they should put their money into making the greatest games possible, competition or not. after what we went through with how they came into next-gen? Well said man. The most frustrating part to me is that EA is the most wealthy company in the world when it comes to Sports Video Games & I know they can do much better than what they've been doing. They have more resources than any other company bet yet their games don 't reflect that. I love Madden 10 but there's no excuse why Espn 2K5 is still a better overall game than Madden 10 & that game came out on a Last Gen console!

so you fall for marketing and advertising? wow. that shows a lot about you. in the end, the final product matters. i don't care if EA releases a video every day until october 6th. 2k10 is going to still beat it out. the gap is slowly closing between EA and 2k but the truth is that EA is missing fundamental basketball in this game.

the animations are really great, but the movement when guys are running around is still robotic and if czar said the visuals are great, then i won;t judge the visuals on these videos, cause they aren't on my plasma screen. gameplay looks really good…..would like to see more signature moves and shots, though.

I agree that some people who like 2k seem to get scared that Live can be good, but it is the same way that if someone says they prefer 2k or say it is better they are automatically a fanboy. Live is looking better every year but I think it is good having the two games so different. I really do think 2k actually needs some strategy and is the most realistic, with Live people will exploit it easily dunking 30 times a game but it is always fun to play like that.

Pasta, please re-read the comments on your own site any time you make an NBA related post. There are more Live supporters bashing all that is 2K than vice versa (on this site anyways.) To call out 2K supporters and say they become "really sensitive" that Live may be good is a little ridiculous. It is absolutely a two-way street, and I believe that, on this website anyways, the 2K bashers are for more vocal than the Live bashers. It's quite apparent that both fan-bases are extremely passionate about "their" game, but because I feel that you fall into the Live side of the debate, you do not even realize the stones being throne in the other direction. Because of the acclaim and overall dominance by the 2K series since the jump to new-gen systems, Live supporters have developed an inferiority complex and lash out at anything that represents 2K.

I agree with your assessment that 2K is terrible in post-release fan relations, and EA is now well-known for its consumer and community support. Because you may have your own prejudice towards 2K (and I'm not calling it undeserved, as a community leader I can understand why you would find EA's approach much more enjoyable and in the process make your job of conveying information to us easier), you fail to notice the positive strides the 2K franchise has made the past few seasons and tend to dwell on the negative. This is in stark contrast towards the NBA Live franchise where any positive step they make it met with glowing praise and the bad is seemingly swept under the rug. By all respected accounts, 2K9 was the superior game last year, yet you failed to acknowledge it as such, backing Live and complaining about the horrendous early online issues of 2K.

I just find it to be a little disheartening that a well respected sports video game site has allowed community relations to sway their opinion rather than gameplay itself. I firmly believe that Live is making all the right moves and is rapidly closing the gap that 2K once had. I'm excited to now have two quality products to purchase and play on October 6th. But all that being said, the lack of respect that 2K receives from this site, in both the posts and the comments, is counterproductive to the general gaming community and a little hypocritical. There seems to be a little "pot calling the kettle black" situation here.

I still love the site and visit it regularly. I'm simply calling it how I see it, and I don't believe I'm the only reader who feels this way.

DUH!!!!! let the reviews do the tallking when 2k and live drop! i played live for 10yrs(no lie up into 2009)! live used to be the ish! people cant respect the 2k is better but we have to respect ea being better tho rite? im jus calling how i see it my first ever 2k title was 2k9! and i had rented nba live 09! i swear i returned live the same day! 2k just felt more real-life to me than nba live! since live hit next-gen its seems like every players looks and feel like a robot! animations are sooooo broken on that game! and who cares about graphics we all know ea has had good graphics on their games year after year! but wat about gameplay? ea best game to date for next-gen consoles (madden 10)

Pasta, please re-read the comments on your own site any time you make an NBA related post. There are more Live supporters bashing all that is 2K than vice versa (on this site anyways.) To call out 2K supporters and say they become "really sensitive" that Live may be good is a little ridiculous. It is absolutely a two-way street, and I believe that, on this website anyways, the 2K bashers are for more vocal than the Live bashers. It's quite apparent that both fan-bases are extremely passionate about "their" game, but because I feel that you fall into the Live side of the debate, you do not even realize the stones being throne in the other direction. Because of the acclaim and overall dominance by the 2K series since the jump to new-gen systems, Live supporters have developed an inferiority complex and lash out at anything that represents 2K.

I agree with your assessment that 2K is terrible in post-release fan relations, and EA is now well-known for its consumer and community support.
