Draft Combine Holds Up 2K10 Demo

The Draft Combine having presented somewhat of a quasi-demo experience would appear to have an effect on when the actual demo for NBA 2K10 will be released. 2K has thus far been vague about when the demo will be appear only stating that it will not be out “for a while”. Hopefully they do in fact follow through and release a true demo. They gave the impression that one was coming for NHL 2K10 up until the day it was announced that they would not be putting one out.

Because the appeal and value of Draft Combine practically disappears once 2K10 is released, they obviously want to squeeze all they can out of it. That is a revenue stream which can help offset what may be stale sales to come due to the current economic conditions…something that has been seen with many other recent titles. Downloadable content has proven to be a resource that these companies are now relying on.

NBA Live 10 already has the demo available, has shown off numerous gameplay videos, and has released videos displaying various improvements along with detailed blogs. Meanwhile 2K has yet to show a lick of gameplay footage.

Is that something to be concerned about? Probably not in the case of NBA 2K10. There are a few sports games that could get by not showing much pre-release. Series such as EA’s FIFA and NHL along with NBA 2K have built up enough trust over the past few years that consumer confidence is high and much of the sales will be made based on the name and expectations.

Despite that they do need to release a demo to counteract the one that is out for Live. The Draft Combine was not sufficient for judging what 2K10 will offer. Given the circumstances it would seem the most likely time for a 2K10 demo to arrive would be October 1st, the Thursday prior to the game’s release.

I played the draft combine and wasn't to impress… there wasn't much of a change from 2k9 other than your little stamina meter… Plus you can only max out at like 50 or 60 overall unless you modded your's up than you can get like a billion skill point and rank him 99…

But yeah a 2k10 demo will be nice… I played the Nba live demo it's so so the controls are stiff and you can't even back your man down. and in the hangar Lebron is like Brandon Roys color… wtf

I don't think there is any reason for concern. I had never played a demo before the last year for a console game and bought plenty of sports titles on what they had done in the past.

Consumers tend to go for what they know and are familiar with.

It baffles me how poor this company is in their marketing efforts. Regardless of their past success, companies depend on growth from new sales, and they’ve done nothing to try and capture that market. Its the old addage, “out of sight…out of mind” that may cause the fence sitters to go with the competition. To you and I, we’ve been sold on nba 2k10 since 2k9, 2k8, 2k7…we are the hardcore fan that continues to come back, and most likely always will. But its like any other business, the diehard is such a small percentage of actual sales, they are losing out on so much with their current marketing plan. I read into this lack of demo in multiple ways.

1.Yes, they do have the DC however, they say it's not indicative of the actual NBA2K10 game. That's fine and all and the DC is actually fun since I am very used to 2K b-ball games but when a person who has been playing 2K for years now and even went hard playing 2K9, the DC is indicative, to me, as a game that has NOT fixed multiple probs such as unnecessary and ridiculous animations that take u out of a play, suspect passing, suspect CPU AI (wtf are they doing many a time??) and footsliding (I can live with that one, though). I would think in the face of that statement and the actual gameplay of the DC PLUS Live 10, I would think they would want to show the game off.

2. 2K is getting even more complacent in their position at the top of the b-ball mountain – Yes, we know they usually don't give up much on their games til close to release, year after year, but not to release a demo this year after everything listed in #1, I think these guys may be getting smug.

3. 2K10 may have some blow the doors off type gaming that they don't want to reveal, yet – I hope so because what I've read really isn't moving me since most of the new stuff isn't fixes to the probs, just more animations and feature, except, supposedly, the post game is being fixed to be more intuitive, which can help, but still…

4. Uhh, maybe the DC just took too much time to work on a demo AND continue to work on the actual game – I buy this one, the most, because most game demos are made much earlier than game completion so 2K was doing the DC during that time instead of a demo.

5. No demo until AFTER the retail game hits the store and they see the comparative sales number to Live 10 – I believe that may happen, as well. If the game slips by their own numbers or even Live's, they will have that demo waiting to possibly go live and persuade folks that 2K10 has the goods…maybe.

6. Uhh, that's it….

Bottom line is that I actually understand why there is no demo coming soon and hopefully, the gameplay is much tighter than the DC because the DC, to me, gamplay wise, is just 2K9.5. Still fun, though. I'll just rent the game if there is no demo at release because this year I am way more interested in Live 10.

Why would you show a demo of a rehashed game. Despite the fact that 2k makes a quality BB game, that doesnt mean that fans will readily accept a release of essentially the same old game with roster updates.

The boys at madden learned that long ago. 2k seems to be satisfied with doing very little to there game and charging the same old 60$. With each passing year more and more people are starting to see what EA is doing with there sports titles and slowly but surely 2k will finally be reduced to the second rate publisher that they truly are. Oh and on a side note, 2k shouldn't even bother to put out a hockey game. Its just a waste of time, money and crucial resources.

2k needs to counter Live demo?? Are you serious? That live Demo was erased from my HD within 5 mins. That demo was terrible. Every player glows seamen white, the player control is terrible and unresponsive. I could go on but that was enough for me and I was done. I will say the court looked better and I liked Marv Albert. If anything the Live Demo solidified that I have been making the right choice for years.

Every year, well least couple of years, 2k release demo late, they are late with info, videos, but they still trump live's ass. Graphic wise yea live looks good, dont like the glow, crappy animations, unrealistic gameplay still plague the game. As far as this website goes, its too Pro EA,

You actually complimented 2k and agreed with what i have said all along!! 2k does not need marketing, advertising or even gameplay videos to be good! It has built confidence in its fans for 10 years and running! I don't even want a demo! I am gonna buy 2k10 on the first day!

I've said that before. But I don't think that means you don't market the game. They should be attempting to build on the base year to year.

yea but you have to admit, that EA does over-hype and excessively market their games (especially a game like NBA live who has struggled the past 5-6 years against NBA 2k). I think right now EA is desperate to get any sales they can with NBA Live 10.

2k has not released anything, but you know that they will beat Live in sales no matter what.

2kglitch9 was not a good game and i feel they o da buyers more then what they have shown. picture this what if they dont put out a demo and you peel $63 and some change and da game is not good can you get your money back.but there is some good news you can take it to gamestop or ebgames and get a $25 trade in.are you willin to loose that much money becuse you feel like you dont need to see a demo or gameplay.

I think 2k9 was the best of the series alongside 2k5, 2k6 and 2k7 so i don't know what you're talkin about. I would easily pay the $60 and not trade the game in and enjoy it til next year. I wouldn't want my money back because 2k10 is going to be the best NBA video game ever once again. LIVE has no chance man.

who are you dude, you're like a retarded alien. How are they over-hyping anything and what is excessively marketing NBA Live. How is EA desperate, they have more money than 2K so I don't get the desperation point. I'm sure 2k will be a solid game but when it comes to Live you tend to have a problem with the company making the game. So you just end up talking nonsense.

I agree that 2K needs to step it up marketing wise and overall decision making wise. I still don't understand why they would rather make a lame boxing game and a tennis game which can not possible sell that well over College Hoops. The only basketball game EA can possibly sell me is College and that's simply because 2K does not offer it. 2K has the better proven product it will take more than 1 year of good graphics for EA to earn any respectable person's trust back.
