First Chance To See NBA 2K10

At an event last night sponsored by 2K Sports, Kobe Bryant faced off against Carmelo Anthony in a game of NBA 2K10. The quality of the video is not good but isn’t much worse than the quality of the live stream from that event.

Should this video be used to judge NBA 2K10? Of course not. It was likely set to a low difficulty and the two guys didn’t even know how to play the game (Kobe asked “how do you dunk” before they started).

However when a game is two weeks out from release and there is no gameplay footage and no demo out it is only natural that people are going to analyze the video and make some conclusions or express some concern. Certainly this event was not an ideal showcase for the first look at gameplay but this is how 2K chose to let their game be shown publicly for the first time. Hopefully this development motivates 2K to release true high quality gameplay footage early this coming week.

Wow, what's up with that? The game speed is ridiculous, is this actual game footage? It's hard to make out, but the game looks super fast like they were turbo mashing all game. Kinda reminded me of NBA Jams. I've been partial to 2k the past few years when it comes to B-Ball, but I have to admit, I liked the NBA Live demo. Live felt pretty organic to me in terms of player movement and game speed. Pasta is right, this is not what you want to be the first taste of 2k10 if you're 2k. I wonder if the game has some sort of speed setting similar to Madden and the bumped it up, because otherwise, it looks like 2k has some proving themselves to do by way of actual official gameplay footage or a demo. So far based on what's out there, I have to give the nod to Live.

I'm one! 2k has been more sim than Live and a better game overall. I'm not a fan of either in particular, I'm a fan of basketball and sports games. I don't get paid either way so I couldn't care any less which game is better. I believe 2k has had the better game for the past 3 years at least, but I also believe that the LIve 10 demo is good (had it's issues but adjusting sliders should fix most) and that so far what we've seen out of 2k (which isn't much) has not been impressive. I'll probably end up buying both games so that I can really make a good judgement and keep the best one. The other will be traded in for Modern Warfare 2.

@Pastapadre – I agree that if your 2k, this is not the way you want your gameplay to be judged. Hopefully next year they leak gameplay vids a week or two earlier. Having said that, I'm sure we will see some actual gameplay vids this week.

You talk about review scores so that gives away two things, your age and your inability to make your own decisions in regards to game purchases. I don't go by review scores, never have never will. Why you ask? Because there is no way of knowing what the game is being judged on, no way of knowing if the reviewer is an avid hoops fan judging with a critical eye or a world of warcraft guy having to review a game with limited knowledge. But hey you keep letting people make those hard decisions for you that way you don't have to think so hard.

For the record I don't think fans of NBA Live are talking shit with numbers of sold unites in mind or review scores, I could care less. What we are talking about is a vastly improved legit contender THIS year with never before seen features (not gimmicks for a change) in ANY sports title on the market. It's clear that these two titles are headed in to different direction for the first time. NBA Live modes are geared more towards authenticity. NBA 2k seems to be leaning more towards the fantasy aspect of basketball gaming with there modes (especially the new mode) which gives the game more appeal to kids. So you might be right about 2K outselling live even this year but what it can't claim to be as authentic as NBA Live in any way. Us NBA Live cheerleaders will be playing sim basketball while you'll be playing a version of it, enjoy.

Oh and for all you 2K guys complaining Live looks to cartoony I think it's funny considering the 2K insider is literally a cartoon character. LMAO!!

I'd actually have to beg to differ. I think at least EA has you covered with the blogs they have been doing along with responding to community questions regarding the game. I know i've had several questions answered be the Devs over at OS.com. That level of involvement is better than any game score in my opinion. Interestingly it's EA that is usually bashed by 2K fans (not saying you) for being so open, charging EA with over advertising. LOL. Thats a bit of misinformation considering what I actually wrote.
Reviews and Sales are the 2 major factors in how business people view whether or not a title was successful. Not how Adults measure their purchase. I agree that that statement is complete non-sense; I'm not sure how you connected those dots. For more clarification here is the actual quote that you seem to have misinterpreted.

I'm not saying that reviews and sales numbers are perfect, but at this point the only other option is opinion. Unfortunately (as you are now finding out,) opinion cannot be the only pillar in which a debate point is based. Until their is a better form of measurement we "Adults" can only reference review scores and sales numbers when making any legitimate arguments.

I'd actually have to beg to differ. I think at least EA has you covered with the blogs they have been doing along with responding to community questions regarding the game. I know i've had several questions answered be the Devs over at OS.com. That level of involvement is better than any game score in my opinion. Interestingly it's EA that is usually bashed by 2K fans (not saying you) for being so open, charging EA with over advertising. LOL. I can't speak to why 2K chooses to be less engaging with it's community I just no I like the information and the inclusion I get from EA's NBA Live team.

I don't think 2K is going to have a bad product, but it might be like NCAA Football where it's not really improved at all over this year. That opens a huge door for Live, and I think they have one foot in as we speak.

I really hope people don't continue ripping 2k for doing "bullshit" marketing, one of my biggest gripes with EA over the past few years is it seems like they've reproportioned their budget from r&d and innovation to marketing (i.e. marketing us the new road to glory, then playing and its the exact same thing as campus legend) With the economy hurting sales I assume manufacturers have similar budgets year to year so any increase in marketing would come from a reallocation of dollars at the expense of development. I have no bias for one company or the other, the best game is the best game, so I appreciate Pasta giving us all the info so we can decide- you would never see a post like this from a website that has affiliations with one of the companies, it's a fans p.o.v.

Live to me was really impressive this year, the only thing that i HATED was the sloppy defense!i could dunk whenever i wanted to, and sadly it was the same for my opponent…Pasta do you think EA is going to improve the defense?

you have to be playing the demo on rookie or pro b/c if it was on allstar or superstar like i play you wouldn't get near as many dunks as you are stating in your comment.

the all-star isn't as forgiving, I haven't been able to dunk at will. actually the D is pretty nice if you understand how to play, it's about knowing your players and their abilities. You also have to understand playing the angles and when to call for help D.

ie. D Fisher isn't going to be able to keep up with D. Rose on every possession (now thats sim).
