EA Strikes Back With New Blog

Earlier this week controversy arose when a 2K Sports representative criticized the way the NBA Live 10 patch was being received. Rather than respond directly to that statement it seems that EA Sports has taken another approach. With the use of their blog they are now attempting to spread the perception that NBA 2K10 has fallen off this year due consumer reaction to the problems with the game. You can check out the posting that went up earlier today here.

This is the first time where competitors have gone at each other in such a public manner. It started on Twitter, elevated with the 2K statement a few days ago, and now is being used in the marketing. Some will surely like this, believing it will bring out the best in both development teams as they try to outdo each other next year because of the rivalry. There is probably something to that. However it doesn’t make either side look good right now. With basketball being the only sport that really has direct competition it has boiled up into what we’ve seen in the last month.

Despite the advances Live has made it has issues of its own too. The latest patch has brought about a problem where the points from goaltending are not being displayed on the scoreboard for instance. EA would be better off touting some of the areas the game excels in such as the atmosphere rather than pointing out the faults of the competition which are evident without being highlighted in a blog. Personally I would just rather have each side concentrating on their own product.

Update: Kotaku has a take on the EA vs 2K war which you can check out here.

The blog linked to is NOT an official EA blog. It's a community user blog. That should be reflected in the posting.

The blog cited in my posting is an official blog from EA Sports. They even emailed the link to it out to various people/sites.

Does the 2K staff ever email out information to you as well Pasta?

Yep, you're right. My bad. I did more digging on the author and realized it was the community manager over at EA. Still poor form in my opinion. Bush league and low brow. When you're the underdog, take the high road.

First of all what the hell is Yaw Obiri-Yeboah <—- what country is this nut job from not USA where

basketball started in Springfield , Mass , USA by James Naismith

Springfield College, in Springfield, Massachusetts, is world renowned as the Birthplace of Basketball.

    Is that a name?

And why is the main person in charge of live a asian guy????

    • VOR

James Naismith was Canadian and he played a similar game back in Canada as a child. He brought back some of those principles to the U.S. and called it "Basket Ball" (not Basketball). So in reality it was an Canadian sport imported to the U.S. think about that next time let your xenophobia take over.

Wow, this is hilarious. I just ran the numbers using vgchartz! haha

EA sold .18 million units so far.
2K sold .45 million units so far.

This means that 2K Sports sold roughly 150% in addition to what EA sports sold.

Now, a quick search of eBay for used games finds:
17 NBA Live 10 games listed
    24 NBA 2K10 games lsited

What? More 2K10 then Live, that must be bad, right? Wrong! Remember, 2K 10 sold 150% more!

There are only 41% more NBA 2K10 games up than NBA Live 10. Take the 150% and the 41% and it's apparent that people who are buying NBA Live are getting rid of their game at a rate of 3 to 1 to those that purchased NBA 2K10.

NBA Live 10 – Change Your Game indeed. For NBA 2K10. :)

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/cabrillo24 cabrillo24

But the reviews are neck and neck, with no game really being over the other. Sales are indicitive for many factors. 1. 2K's past success, 2. Lies past failures, 3. Kobe Bryant being on the cover. To say these numbers indicate 2K is by far the better game is misleading.

      • http://www.2kfootballstrategy.com/ valdarez

You're missing the point. EA tried to use people putting their games up for trade as proof that Live is better, when a quick comparison shows that if we use online Ads Live is in fact being traded in at 3 times the amount that NBA 2K10 is being traded.

    • VOR

valdarez stop being a pigeon doing free marketing for a product that you paid premium price. 2K doesn't need your support AFTER you bought the product LOL. Also it doesn't mean that a product is better just because they sold more you nitwit. To me out of all of the arguments that is absolutely the worse. If you like 2K then fine but if you put that game in front of a casual fan and put Live in front of a casual fan I'm pretty sure that the casual fan would choose Live. Next time you get a chance do the "Mama Test". Get an older adult to try both and see what they say about both

Casual Fan= 8 to 13 year olds who don’t know the first thing about the sport but just want to dunk it up with Lebron and Kobe..

EA can keep those kiddos…..I’m sure you fit right in with that rabble..

Agreed that more sales != better product. Madden sells tons of games every year, and it's definitely not the best football game on the market, not from a gameplay perspective.

Raeding comprehension is your friend. Note I wasn't discussing the quality of the games, or which one is 'better', that is subjective. What I did was prove through facts, and numbers, that players are trading in their NBA Live 10 games at a far faster rate than those who purchased NBA 2K10.

As for the rest of your argument, you have no basis for it other than your own subjective view.

As for the Mama Test, the last Mama I tested was yours. Though she had a few glitches, she played well, and I found it easy to score in the paint. (oh snap!), jk, but couldn't resist. :)

I understand this is a marketing ploy by EA and not necessarily the Live developers, but 2K was out of line for saying what they said, and the community knows it, why did EA have to add fuel to the fire? Really this is such a huge turn off. Talk about your game, your way ahead, and bring about some more patches.

    • VOR

To me this qualifies under the who cares department. Somebody said "this" and the other responded with "that" but to me I could cares less. I just play the games that I like the best and you know whats funny I always find a good online match even at 2 in the morning LOL. That's my personal test, if I can find a good game at 2 in the morning then I could care less who sells more.

P.S. I'm not worried about the product's life or if it even goes under the following year I just play the best game now and let all of these developers sort out all that other crap.

Either way, this is all gamesmanship….With many gamers passionately supporting their favorite game, it is great to see the developers having that same passion.

I get so tired of reading top execs try to create a positive spin on why their product isn't selling like it should. I like to see some honesty and a little verbal jostling…This could really turn up the heat when it comes to the quality of future games….

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/cabrillo24 cabrillo24

PR is what determines what gets posted on there or not (official releases/blogs etc). This is still an exec move.

Your point is sales actually, based upon the sales figures you've put up. All games get sold once they are used, but THE POINT EA was making was the fact that lots of 2K users are very unsatisfied and playing the game only once before returning it. EA is making no claims that their game is being traded in, but you're hearing more about cases in which 2K games are returned after first use. I think you my friend are missing THE POINT.

    • http://www.2kfootballstrategy.com/ valdarez

No, my point is folks who are putting their games up for sale used in comparison to the number of games actually sold. I didn't quote trade ins, but 'used' games up for sale. In other words games that people played per your indication. Per games sold, more Live players are selling their games than those who purchased NBA 2K10. EA pretty much stuck their proverbial marketing foot in their mouth.

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/cabrillo24 cabrillo24

Your point is sales, its obvious. Second, the point of the blog was about people dumping NBA 2K10 after playing it one time. Did you even read the blog? I'm done, I can't stand people who stare at the sky and say its red when it's obviously blue.

        • http://www.2kfootballstrategy.com/ valdarez

There's sales and then there's sales. At this point, not really sure what your referring to the total number of sales of Live/NBA 2K10, or the used items of Live/NBA2K10 on eBay? Regardless, my point was clear, the ratio of people selling their used games are 3x higher with those who purchased NBA Live than those who purchased NBA 2K10.

I did read the blog, and it didn't say anything about people trading in their games after only playing it once, though it did have pictures of items up for sale, but it looked to me that was less than half, and definitely not the point of the blog by any measure.

As for the sky, it's blue here. :)

Of course you are not gonna see a switch around in sales this year because this is the first year in a while they got it right. so it will only be out sold because people are unaware of how good live is this year.
Next year and the year after will be a complete different outcome.

REMEMBER THE ONLY REASON NBA 2K OUT SELLS NBA LIVE IS BECAUSE AT ONE POINT THE WERE IN THIS SAME POSITION. WHERE THEY HAD A GOOD PRODUCT NO ONE KNEW ABOUT. WHAT DID THE DO? GLAD YOU ASKED KIDDOS.

I love Liev but I wish they would fix the auto/quick sub issues… The controller buttons advances screens when you're trying to quick sub after fouls… When you try to quick-sub following highlights, replays, cut scenes, and other normal times you would be able to sub in real life, the game thinks you are pressing A in order to advance the game. So the sub screen disappears and you"re scrambling to get those subs in. Substitutions become impossible. And why does Sacramento Kings forward Jon Brockman have a white dude's body and a black dude's head and his height is listed at 0'1"??????? Why are there locks on everyone's attributes so you can barely adjust sh*t????

Hopefully out of this comes some better games. EA fails with their approach to Fight Night, NCAA Football is the most stale of any yearly game in history, NCAA Basketball 10 is a joke compared to College Hoops 2K8, Madden is really not a good game after playing it for a couple of weeks. Live has been dominated for the last 10 years. I guess the flagship of EA these days is FIFA which gets great ratings annually and NHL also get's good ratings. So, out of 6 titles that I named only 2 meet expectations normally. EA you need to focus on making better games instead of childish beefs.

TD St. Matthew-Daniel: Do I start off with the vast contract options? Defined player roles? D-League integration? When it comes to dealing with team personnel decisions, NBA 2K10 has better handles than Rafer Alston’s alter ago at the Rucker.

Restricted free agents are now a thing of virtual reality in NBA 2K10 and being able to call up or demote players to the D-League keeps you busy as a GM. Also, now that failing to honor player roles can prove costly for your team’s chemistry, you have to pay closer attention to player personalities and motives when making trades or free-agent signings. And if that doesn’t entice you, how do 10-day contracts sound? Yup, Morris Almond and other D-League hopefuls would be pleased as well.

Steve Bartlett: Yeah. I’m not even going to lie, I’m supposed to be over here arguing for Live’s great Dynasty mode but 2K10’s handle on the business side of the Association is serious. You mentioned the restricted free agents in 2K, which I love. It’s impressive to me that when you negotiate new player contracts the game gives you the option to build a player and team option into the contracts. If a player is indecisive in signing with your team, this element can help you sway the pendulum in your favor.

In Live you can’t do any of these things when it comes to contracts. What you can do is play a negotiation game. The game gives you seven player interests to choose from when signing a free agent. You have three tries to select two options that you think the player will bite on. 2K does not have that type of interaction between the agent and GM.

Patches are inherently problematic when trying to fix/add/improve so many things so there were some offspring issues caused but you CAN'T say that they haven't tried to fix the game when it's obvious they have. Just hope that they will fix the new probs the patch caused and may some other things they couldnt quite address in the first patch. BE GRATEFUL!

Now, as for the blog, I don't agree with EA responding to 2K's asinine rant because it was great just looking at 2K grasp for straws and make themselves look even worse and very insecure. The high road would have been to ignore them but, since it's already done, eff it. EA got me, this year, and, heck, if they want to stick out their chests in regards to 2K's feeling a bit "small" these days, again, eff it. Let EA enjoy this because they deserve the kudos for Live 10 and I'm not exactly mad they want to tell the comp to shut the eff up, since 2K wanted to start ish.

They got you and the rest of the gullible sheep…congrats.

        • TreyIM2

Just because I like Live 10 over 2K10, does that make me a "gullible sheep"? Do I NOT have the right to have my OWN opinions, own brain, like what I like and think for myself?? Explain yourself because I need to know why I am a "gullible sheep."

          • X2KFootballG0dX

Anyone who bought Live from the start is not a gullible peon. Anyone who has bought 2K the last 4 to 5 years but made the switch to Live this year is just a victim of the EA Sports Hype Machine.

The many masses of EA Puppets who root for huge corporations like EA in its quest to destroy quality sports gaming.

            EA Sports Consumers=Uncaring trash.

EA buys exclusive licenses to block competition and the masses see nothing wrong with that…Pathetic….They still buy their shitty products!!!

Jump off the conveyor belt you EA Puppets!!!!….Before its too late.

HAHAHAHAHAHA. Retarded statements. Funny but retarded. As far as quality gaming goes I dont see how the basketball game 2k has released would qualify in that regard. Im pretty sure EA is trying its best to MAKE MONEY. My goal as a consumer is to get the best value for my dollar, which in a sports game is the most realistic and enjoyable experience. Baskteball games are pathetic right now so I no longer by them. I am thankful for the competition but I sure dont feel both sides are doing their best to put out a quality game. I mean its not like 2k has to split its resources in order to create a football game too.

The NBA Live team is spending more time reading 2K assaults than reading our forum posts on THEIR site.

They need to fix our game..asap. It's not as bad as 2K but if they do nothing, then it will be.

Well this wasn't the developers who made the blog. But I agree it can be perceived that way which is part of why this was such a bad idea.

Im suprised Pasta even posted this….EA fanboy lol

    • Lake Allen

Im not surprised. Pasta consistently holds EA to the fire when they do something stupid. It just so happens they seem to do less of it these days.

Sad, they have to hype themselves up, pathetic! 2K10 killed them, period!

    • TreyIM2

Remember, 2K started the "fight"…yet u point out EA for sounding "pathetic". Yea, way to take sides and make a dumb, off base and biased statement.

Anyone else draw a comparison between EA Strikes Back and 'Empire' Strikes Back? Last time I watched Star Wars, the Empire was evil. :)

    • blondeviking64

WOW, way to make it into good and evil when both companies just want the same thing. YOUR MONEY. LOL, as if its more noble to want it if you are a smaller company rather than a bigger company.

The way EA markets, those are probably just EA employees posting that on Craig's list. EA is full of losers and full of douches like Peter Moore. Terrible company!

Wow, this is really kinda funny.

I love competition, but this seems like a forum-type of argument lol. Oh man.

With both games being buggy this year, both companies should just shutup and go to work.
