Nominees for VGA Awards

Earlier today the nominees for the 2009 Video Game Awards were announced. You can vote in all of the categories here. Two of them are sports related with the “Best Individual Sports Game” and “Best Team Sports Game”. The show will air Saturday December 12th on Spike.

For the “Best Individual Sports Game” the nominees are Fight Night Round 4, Tiger Woods 10, UFC 2009 Undisputed, and Wii Sports Resort. The “Best Team Sports Game” options are the same as last year with FIFA 10, Madden 10, NBA 2K10, and NHL 10.

The most glaring omission is in the team sports category which did not include MLB 09: The Show. While I still take issue with the game’s poor online play it deserves recognition for everything else it does right. It is probably more worthy of being in the running than NBA 2K10 and NHL 10.

Last year the two winners were Shaun White Snowboarding and NHL 09 which goes to show the winners are not necessarily based on popularity. FNR4 will probably battle with UFC 2009 for the individual sports title while FIFA 10 may take the team sports crown if it can get enough support to top Madden 10.

It has its bugs, yes they are inexcusable, but the game is a solid b-ball game. 2k deserves the critisicam, but it also deserves credit. they have the best representations of nba players to date. there is no desputing that.

UFC wasnt all that good of game to me.
The gameplay and all was cool but the career mode was horrible.
FNR4 should take that.

Good point, but the reason I bought a PS3 this year was strictly for The Show, and I have read other stories on OS about people who did the same…not many sports games have the kind of impact or quality that can drive system sales.

You cannot put the Show on the list because that is console exclusive and is on the weaker console the PS3 which when it goes up against the 360 in terms of 3rd party games the 360 outsells it by a large margin.

Unless the game is available to all gamers then it cannot be put on the list. I love the show but I agree with not putting it on the list just to stroke PS3 fanboys cocks

MLB the Show was simply the best sports game period IMO. The online features actually were great it had great matchmaking, polls, uploads, roster sharing and the list goes on and on. The only negative about it was the online games which could be laggy. That game show be nominated for Game of the Year because it was that good. Too bad though they had to resort to politics.

To put this game into perspective, I didn't even follow baseball until I started to play this game. I actually learned parts of the game by playing this game and listening to the commentary. Although I love Madden I don't think the Madden commentators bring any true insight into the game.

LOL, before Madden 10 I actually liked Collinsworth as a commentator (in real life). Now I pretty much hate him. I would never run the ball blah blah blah. LOL. I mostly hate all commentators except coach Chucky and coach Billick. They are the only two guys who have any actual insight into football and dont waste time telling me about when they talked to some guys cousin in the hotel the night before the game about how he felt becuase he had a chance to pass the 17th guy on the rushing attempts without a fumble list

- Tiger was solid in terms of gameplay, but the AI scores in career mode and some players' scores in online live tourney were low to the point of absurdity (the US Open was won in my career by A. Kim who shot 29 under par).
- Wii Sports Resort had Wii Motion control and was good for quick fun, but had basically zero depth.

Team Sports:
- I haven't played FIFA, NBA or NHL, so I can't really comment on those. But from the sounds of it, FIFA and NHL would be the front runners in this category.
- Madden was a step in the right direction, but some glaring issues still stick out to me (basically all the stuff that the upcoming patch is set to address – when's that gonna be out, by the way?).
