The Worst Games of 2009

Now that December has arrived and all of the sports titles have been released there will be articles featured throughout the remainder month that look back on the games and big stories of the year. Before starting the countdown on the top 10 games of 2009 the worst has to be cleared out. Last year those were fringe titles FIFA Street 3 and Facebreaker. This time around there is a major franchise included.

3) NBA Unrivaled
There was absolutely nothing redeeming about this downloadable game and it was sold at the egregious price of $15. Thankfully no more than a handful (literally) of people actually bought it so the damage was very limited.

2) MLB Front Office Manager
Lots of online posters exaggerate the problems with games. However FOM was literally broken. Then 2K Sports completely abandoned it providing absolutely no support or even any communication with those who had purchased it.

1) MLB 2K9

The worst major yearly sports title this generation in the context of when it was released. No game has been plagued with as many glitches as regularly experienced in MLB 2K9. It was improbable to get through a single game without coming across at least one if not several. This video is an entertaining example of what the final product provided. As stated back when evaluating the game there comes a point where the “building a foundation” excuse can not be accepted anymore and it becomes apparent the game has very little potential.

2K Sports even disrespected baseball enthusiasts by changing the wall dimension of parks and adding non-existent billboards to provide more space for advertising. At the very least you would expect a company to be true to the sport they are attempting to replicate. Consumers who only own a 360 are relegated to looking forward to the end of the third party license and feeling jealousy towards those who have a PS3.

NCAA wasn't a terrible game, I have had fun with it sometimes. But there are way too many glaring problems and frustrating bullshit everywhere that makes me hate it. And DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON PRESENTATION. So bad. I love college football, after watching the Boise-Oklahoma game i've liked it more than the NFL, and NCAA 10 doesnt do it justice. If 09 had team specific bowl endzones I'd have played that for the last 4 months, but sadly it doesnt. I hope NCAA 11 does College Football justice.

After MLB 2K9's release, the 2K forums were full of people airing their frustration with legit complaints and honest questions. However, the mods over there and Ronnie did their best to suppress any negative comments and locked any tread that was critical of the game.

As a consumer, it made you feel good to know that your opinions and issues went unheard and neglected.

Congrats, 2K…2009 was the year you became the laughingstock of baseball video gaming.

2K9 was not as bad as everyone said it was. The pitching was good and the hitting mechanics were solid, and while it did have a lot of problems and glitches I would, by no means, call it the worst sports game of 2009. It was a below average-mediocre title, but not horrible.

Pitching was intuitive…but the CPU would swing at nearly EVERYTHING. Lots of either three-pitch Ks or 1 or 2 pitch ABs. Pitch counts were completely unrealistic and you couldn't actually enjoy the pitching mechanics when you only got to do it 3-5 times an inning.

Online league games were home run slugfests – I scored 40+ runs in one game…AND LOST!

Players would walk in slo-mo to catch pop-ups/fly balls…then, if you're outfield got to the ball, they either never started the ball-catching animation or they let the ball hit them in the head!

But the gamekiller for me was when my Franchise mode froze up after the second offseason and couldn't be advance. I had multiple save files and all would freeze at the same point.

All these, plus major stat glitches in Franchise mode and everything else already said made 2K9 sounds like a worst-game-of-the-year candidate to me.

I've heard the complaints about online games, but quite honestly the online stuff being arcade to the max isn't really a deal breaker.

I know the issues with fielding, I own the game and that is a terrible aspect.

Freezes are glumped in with my "glitches" statement. Not aware of "major stat glitches" in Franchise mode. Any examples?

Plus, these same stats showed that the players played more than 200 games in a season, they drove in 190+ RBIs, 70+ home runs, and cleaned up all yearly awards.

This also affected pitchers, as some pitchers in both the AL and NL had these BATTING stats. So pitchers won offensive awards.

Pre-patch games were pretty high scoring. I didn't see anything like that, but double digit scores were pretty normal. After the first patch they made hitting homeruns pretty difficult.

Madden 10 is vastly improved, because Madden 09 and 08 were such horrible games all they really could do is improve the game. Don't get me wrong Madden 10 is still a horrible simulation of football but compared to 08 or 09 it's a huge step up.
