New EA Sports Game May Be NBA Jam

After a few weeks of speculation and discovery of a possible NFL Trainer game now there is another entry to consider for the new game to be announced by EA this month. ESPN reports the game in question will be an updated version of NBA Jam for the Wii. This is especially surprising given that NBA Jam was made by Midway before passing to Acclaim meaning EA would have purchased the rights to the franchise.

Just as with the NFL Trainer game this probably won’t elicit much excitement given that it is tied to the Wii and expectations for what the mystery game could be had grown somewhat unrealistic. There is demand out there for an NBA Arcade game now that both Street and Ballers have been shut down. Given the success of downloadable arcade titles for the PS3 and 360 the next in the line of expansion would seem to naturally be NBA. However as of yet there have been no indications that one is in the works.

Certainly though NBA Jam has a place in the hearts of many gamers but being limited to the Wii means it won’t be reaching many of them. What do you think about an updated version of NBA Jam as the new EA Sports game? Leave your thoughts in the comments!

I played NBA Jam when it was on the SEGA and it was one of my favorite games but hearing that this will just be on the Wii upsets me. If this was on the 360 I would have at least rented it. Big disappointment.

Agreed! I loved NBA Jam on the old consoles and could guarantee that I'd buy it if it were on Xbox 360's arcade for download. However, I cannot imagine why EA Sports would ever make a highly profitable game like NBA Jam and only send it to the Wii. My guess is that this is solely rumor and it will be coming to Xbox 360 and PS3.

I think EA is over estimating the sentimental value this may have on people. This, just like almost every other Wii game, will be a game that would bring interest for a few hours of game play. After that, the Wii would sit and collect dust for the next however long it is until another game like this comes out again.

I have been waiting several years HOPING NBA Jam would make a comeback. It was a classic and I have no idea why they stopped releasing it! Make it for ALL platforms and you will make MONEY, quit going exclusive, you are shooting yourselves in the foot.

C'mon…do you people really think this will stay on Wii? EA SPORTS, as a 3rd party publisher, won't piss off Sony and Microsoft by not letting them get their hands on this…at least eventually. With Sony and Microsoft getting behind their online platforms like offline doesnt matter, they crave titles like this. Big names, big licenses, big time loyalty. What could be a better downloadable sports game?

Maybe it comes out first on Wii, but i fully expect next-gen to get this when its ready. Or maybe it will come out on all 3 at the same time – we will await official word from EA and go from there. Either way, i am very excited!

This could be pretty good, but why only the Wii exclusivity? When they announced Tecmo Bowl was coming back a few years ago, I was up for that and it was only for DS. That was a letdown although I wonder if anything no matter how more advanced technologically and graphically will really compare to the non-stop fun it used to be. I played a lot of Jam on the SEGA in my younger years, so I'll be keeping an eye on the update.

I have the NBA JAM on playstation 2……….it was pretty good, but never caught on……….you can dunk on your own teammates, throw multiple alleys, do some dumbass dunks with dances in them…….AND it has all time greats in it to unlock and tons of extra guys in it. I made MJ on the bulls and finished the game. Very nice
